Makita 110V or 18V angle grinder

Updated: October 2026

You are choosing between the only corded Makita in this folder and a cordless bare body, and the corded one is not a normal home grinder. The Makita 9557HNR/1 is 110 V with a yellow plug. The cordless Makita beside it, the DGA454Z, needs an 18 V pack the box does not include. This capture does not contain a 230 V household grinder. The [Makita angle grinder comparison](/hub/tools/makita-angle-grinder) lists all eleven rows. Products Compared, 21 October 2026. Listings only, no lab. The only corded tool here is 110 V

The 9557HNR/1 is listed at £89.49 as a Makita 110 V 115 mm angle grinder with a yellow 110 V 3-pin plug. The box does not name a disc. It is complete only for a supply you may not have. The wider order of checks is the buying guide.

What 110 V is for

HSE treats ordinary 230 V plugs on sites as the wrong default: cordless tools, or a 110 V supply centre-tapped so the voltage to earth does not exceed 55 V. Screwfix describes 110 V as the site arrangement with an isolating transformer. This shelf has no 230 V Makita row, and the amazon price does not include a transformer.

When the 18 V bare tool is the one you already prepared for

The DGA454Z is £179.06, an 18 V bare unit, 4.8 from 465 reviews. If the packs are already on the shelf, you are not paying the battery again. If you have only 13 A sockets and no pack, neither tool is a finished purchase. Which bodies are Makita is genuine or compatible.

Dealer figures that are not the amazon row

ToolStore UK prints about 840 W and 7.5 m/s², plus 89 dB(A). The amazon line has no wattage. Use the 9557HNR/1 on a 110 V supply, and the DGA454Z when you already have the pack. Fitting the disc is how to use a Makita angle grinder.

Common questions

Can I plug this 110 V Makita into a kitchen socket?
No. The 9557HNR/1 bullets specify a yellow 110 V 3-pin plug. A kitchen socket in the UK is 230 V with a 13 A BS 1363 plug. The box does not include a transformer, and double insulation does not change the pins. An adapter that forces the plug into the socket is the wrong fix. If 13 A is all you have, leave this ASIN and look at a cordless body only when you already own a pack.
Does 110 V mean it is half as powerful?
No. Screwfix’s buying guide says voltage is not the power rating. 110 V on this tool means the supply system, the yellow plug, and a centre-tapped site arrangement in the HSE guidance, where the point is 55 V to earth rather than a smaller motor. The amazon file does not print watts at all. A dealer page prints about 840 W. That dealer figure is not half of a 230 V sibling, and this folder does not contain a 230 V sibling to compare.
What else do I need on a site?
You need the 110 V supply the plug expects. If the site still has 230 V sockets, HSG141’s sketch is a transformer fed from those sockets, not the grinder plugged in direct. The amazon box lists the tool, the grip, a wrench, and a guard. It does not list the transformer or a disc. Cordless tools are the alternative HSE puts beside 110 V, because they remove the lead. They are an alternative only when the pack exists.
If I already own 18 V packs, when is the cordless body the simpler tool?
When the packs are Makita 18 V packs and you buy the DGA454Z bare body at £179.06, the lead and the transformer drop out of the job. You still do not get a disc or a charger in the table, and heavy cutting still uses 4 Ah or 5 Ah packs quickly, according to UK reviews. It is simpler than arranging a 110 V supply you do not have. It is not simpler if you have no pack and you hoped £89.49 was the whole cost.
Does the cordless price include the pack?
The DGA454Z price of £179.06 does not. The title says bare unit. The XAG25Z at £124.27 also excludes the battery. Most of the non-Makita 18 V bodies exclude it too. The Fledukten at £69.99 includes two 21 V packs, and the bullets say those packs must not be used on other brands, so they are not the Makita pack this question is about. Add the pack you actually own, or the pack you still have to buy, before you call one side cheaper.
Is there a 230 V Makita in this capture?
No. The only corded tool in the eleven is the 9557HNR/1 at 110 V. There is no 230 V angle grinder in the raw files to recommend for a domestic socket. If that is the tool you need, it is outside this comparison. Pointing you at the cordless bare unit is fair only when you have a pack, and the pack is extra. Pointing you at the yellow plug is fair only when you have 110 V.
