How to use a Makita 125mm angle grinder

Updated: October 2026

You are about to fit a disc to a 125 mm angle grinder, a corded Makita from this shelf or a cordless body sold beside it. The job goes wrong when the tool is still live, the guard is off, or the disc is marked for a slower machine. This page is how to use a Makita 125mm angle grinder in that narrow sense: isolate it, fit the guard, and use a 125 mm disc whose marked speed covers the tool. It does not rank the eight listings. The [Makita angle grinder 125 comparison](/hub/tools/makita-angle-grinder-125) does that. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Nothing here is a lab trial.

Isolate the tool first

Electrical Safety First tells you to switch off and unplug a mains grinder before you change the wheel. On the GA5030RK, the 230 V row, and the GA5034/1, the 110 V row, the plug comes out before your hand goes near the nut. Anti-restart on the GA5030RK does not replace that. If the lead is damaged, stop. On Synxiter, JOJOCY, laloohome, Fledukten, Roadtime and Gautesy, take the pack off first. A pack that is clicked in can still start the motor. A switch that clicks on is not a reason to change a disc with the pack fitted. Which plug belongs on which Makita is the 110 V or 230 V page.

Guard, handle, and disc

Fit the guard so the closed side is toward you, then the inner flange, the disc and the lock nut, with the shaft lock held. Follow the paper in your box if it differs, and fit the side handle before you start. The disc has to be 125 mm, and the marked speed has to cover the tool. Both Makita rows print 11,000 rpm. Do not borrow 12,000 rpm from a GA5021 manual. Synxiter's row says 8,000 rpm. Gautesy conflicts: 90,000 rpm on the attribute row, and bullets from 2,000 to 9,000. Ignore 90,000 until those lines agree. The GA5034/1 dust-collecting guard is not in the box. You still need the wheel guard.

What not to fit

The Office for Product Safety and Standards published PSA5 on 14 March 2023 about toothed saw-blade attachments, after an earlier alert on chainsaw discs. The alert is about kickback and points at BS EN 60745-2-3. A toothed blade does not belong on these 125 mm tools. Roadtime's accessory bullet includes one wood cutting disc. Leave it unused. JOJOCY's bullet claims a tool-free cover, and a France review says the guard took more than 10 minutes to fit. If the guard will not close toward you, do not start. Which body to buy is the best Makita 125 mm angle grinder page.

When to stop

Stop when the cable is cut or the pack is damaged, when you cannot fit a guard, or when other people are in the line of sparks. The only noise figure on these listings is LpA 85 dB(A) on the GA5030RK. Do not replace 85 with 88 from a GA5030R/2 sheet, which is a different code. When the grinder is work equipment and you have not been trained to mount wheels, hand that job to someone who does it for work. PUWER is the work reference, not a home checklist. At home the same limits apply: isolate the tool, keep the guard on, match the disc marking, and leave a toothed blade off. The buying guide sorts supply, brand and contents if you are still choosing the box.

Common questions

What do I do before I touch the disc?
Switch the tool off and isolate it. On the GA5030RK or the GA5034/1, unplug the lead, which is the step Electrical Safety First gives for a mains grinder. On Synxiter, JOJOCY, laloohome, Fledukten, Roadtime or Gautesy, take the battery pack off. Anti-restart on the GA5030RK, and a switch that clicks on, do not replace that step.
Which way does the guard face?
The closed side faces you. A generic Makita manual describes that, then the flange, the disc and the lock nut. That manual is not the booklet for every ASIN on this shelf. If the guard in your box will not sit with the closed side toward you, leave the tool switched off and unplugged, or with the pack removed, until it does.
How do I know the disc is fast enough for the tool?
Read the maximum speed on the disc and compare it with the tool. The two Makita rows here print 11,000 rpm, so the disc has to be marked for at least that. Use the speed printed for the tool in your hand. On Gautesy, ignore the attribute row of 90,000 rpm, because the bullets list 2,000 to 9,000 rpm and the two lines do not agree.
Can I use the wood cutting disc that comes with one kit?
No. Roadtime's bullet lists a wood cutting disc. That does not make the grinder a saw, and it is not an exception to the Office for Product Safety and Standards alert on toothed saw blades and chainsaw discs, PSA5, issued on 14 March 2023. Leave the disc unused. Electrical Safety First also says not to fit attachments that turn a grinder into another tool.
What is different on a cordless body?
You remove the pack instead of pulling a mains plug, and you match the disc to the speed that listing actually prints. The brand field on those six rows is not Makita, so a Makita manual's pictures are a guide to the usual order of parts, not a procedure written for that brand. The battery is outside the box on five of them.
The GA5034/1 dust guard is not in the box. What does that change?
The listing says a dust-collecting wheel guard is optional and not included. You still fit the wheel guard that covers you. The missing part is the dust-collecting guard, not permission to run the disc bare. The included line on that ASIN is the grinder itself. None of the eight listings describes a vacuum port you could connect instead.
