How to use a Bosch cordless angle grinder

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have one of these Bosch bodies on the bench, and the advice you found still says to unplug it. A cordless grinder has no mains lead on the tool. The cut is the same class of hazard: a disc at speed, a guard that has to be on, and a lock that depends on the order number. This is how to use a Bosch cordless angle grinder from the nine amazon.co.uk listings saved on 21 October 2026. The rows are on the [Bosch cordless angle grinder comparison](/hub/tools/bosch-cordless-angle-grinder). Which body to buy is the [Bosch cordless angle grinder buying guide](/hub/tools/bosch-cordless-angle-grinder/sub/bosch-cordless-angle-grinder-buying-guide). The pack family is [Bosch green or blue angle grinder](/hub/tools/bosch-cordless-angle-grinder/sub/bosch-cordless-angle-grinder-green-or-blue). The carton is [Bosch angle grinder with battery or bare](/hub/tools/bosch-cordless-angle-grinder/sub/bosch-cordless-angle-grinder-bare-or-kit). Take the battery off first

Electrical Safety First tells you to disconnect an angle grinder before you touch the wheel, and to use a UK 3-pin plug on the tool or the charger. On these bodies the disconnect is the pack. Take the battery off before you move the guard, the nut, or the disc. If a charger is in the socket, that charger is the mains item. Only the UniversalGrind kit names a charger, the AL18V-20, and the listing does not say it has a BS 1363 plug. Look at the pins. Fit a pack from the family the body accepts, and only when you are about to work. Green POWER FOR ALL packs do not belong on a blue Professional body. A UK review of the GWS 18V-8 says standard batteries do not fit. The green English manual recommends a PBA 18V pack of at least 4.0 Ah. That is a recommendation, not a runtime we measured. A UK review of the bare UniversalGrind says a 2 Ah pack lasted about 3–4 minutes. If the pack is small, plan a short cut rather than a mains-length session. Clamp the work. Goggles stay on while you fit the disc.

Nut, quick nut, or an unstated X-LOCK

The GWS 18V-8, order 06019N9000, includes locking nut 1 603 345 043 and two-hole spanner 1 607 950 043, plus a backing flange and a guard. A UK review says there is no quick-release blade change. With the pack off, use that spanner, and seat a disc that fits freely but not loosely. HSE guidance in HSG17 uses that fit test for abrasive wheels at work. It is the right habit at home. Do not add a washer the box did not include. The AdvancedGrind includes a quick clamping nut M14. A bullet says the change is tool-free and takes less than 12 seconds. Quote that as the listing’s claim. It is not a time we measured. Both 1,100 W bodies, orders 06019N4100 and 06019N4000, include quick-locking nut 2 608 000 684. Their bullets do not say “tool-free”. Follow the nut in that box. Do not borrow the AdvancedGrind’s 12-second sentence for the blue bodies. The GWX18V-11PS, order 06019N4400, is the gap. English bullets name a rotatable handle, kickback control, an intelligent brake, and a paddle switch. They do not name X-LOCK or a nut. A review not marked United Kingdom mentions an adapter for older discs. That is not a Bosch instruction in this file. Bosch’s X-LOCK page says a conventional disc does not fit an X-LOCK body, and that many X-LOCK discs fit older nut grinders, with threaded exceptions. Order 06019N4200 prints X-LOCK. This ASIN is not that order. If you cannot see how the disc locks from the parts in the box, stop and confirm 06019N4400 before you buy a wheel.

Guard, speed mark, and no toothed blade

Put the guard back on before the pack goes on. The bare UniversalGrind and both PWS bodies name a quick-adjust guard. The GWS and both 1,100 W bodies include guard 1 605 510 365. The GWX includes guard 1 600 A00 XK9 and a protective cover. Set the open side away from you, then try to rotate the guard by hand. If it slips, stop. Electrical Safety First expects the guard in place. The wheel’s marked speed must be at least the tool’s speed. The bare UniversalGrind lists 12,000 rpm. The AdvancedGrind lists a maximum of 12,000 rpm. Bosch DIY UK prints 7,800–10,000 rpm for PWS order 06033E6000, which the amazon title does not. Several other rows print no rpm, including both 1,100 W bodies and the GWX. Do not invent a speed for a blank cell. Do not fit a toothed saw blade or a chainsaw disc. The Office for Product Safety and Standards said so in alert PSA5 on 14 March 2023, pointing at BS EN 60745-2-3. A review in the file, not marked United Kingdom, describes a wood-cutting disc. That sentence is not an instruction.

When to stop

Stop if the nut will not seat, if the disc binds, or if the guard will not stay. Stop if you cannot name the lock for the GWX from the parts in front of you. At work, mounting an abrasive wheel is for a trained person. HSE’s PUWER frame says the equipment has to be suitable and used by people who have the information. HSG17’s practical line is that machine speed must not exceed wheel speed. UK law marks noise at 80 dB(A) and 85 dB(A), and vibration at 2.5 m/s² and 5.0 m/s². HSE’s screening value for 100–180 mm grinders is about 7 m/s². None of those figures was read off these bodies. Do not tape a stiff switch down. These supply lists do not name a vacuum port. If masonry dust fills the room, or the cut needs water, stop and call a professional. A toothed blade is not the workaround.

Common questions

Do I unplug a cordless grinder?
You remove the battery. These grinders have no mains lead on the tool. Electrical Safety First still wants the energy source disconnected before you touch the wheel. On this set that source is the 18 V pack. If the AL18V-20 or any other charger is plugged in, unplug it before you handle a damaged pack. The kit listing does not confirm a BS 1363 plug, so you check the pins.
Which box includes a spanner?
The GWS 18V-8 includes two-hole spanner 1 607 950 043 and a locking nut. A UK review describes it as having no quick-release change. The AdvancedGrind uses a quick clamping nut M14 instead. Both 1,100 W bodies include quick-locking nut 2 608 000 684 and do not list a spanner. The GWX list names a guard, a cover, a handle, and an L-BOXX, and it does not name a spanner or a nut.
Can I put a nut-type disc on the GWX because a review mentioned an adapter?
No. A review that is not marked United Kingdom mentions an adapter. That is not an instruction in the English bullets, and those bullets do not say X-LOCK either. Bosch says a conventional disc does not fit an X-LOCK body. This listing is order 06019N4400, not the order whose page prints X-LOCK. If the parts do not show a nut you understand, leave the disc off until you have confirmed the system.
May I fit a wood-cutting or toothed blade?
No. PSA5, published on 14 March 2023, says not to fit a toothed saw blade or a chainsaw disc to an angle grinder. A review in this file that describes a wood-cutting disc is not a permitted setup. Use an abrasive disc matched to the material and to a speed you can read for that order number. Timber needs a saw.
Does the guard have to be on at home?
Yes. Electrical Safety First does not limit the guard to a workplace. The open side faces away from you, and the guard has to stay put when you try to turn it. A quick-adjust guard is still a guard. Taking it off to reach a tight corner is the moment to change the setup, not the moment to run the disc bare.
What if there is no vacuum port?
You do not invent a port these supply lists do not name. For a short metal tidy-up outdoors, goggles may be enough for you to see. For masonry dust in a room, or any cut that needs water, stop and control the dust or call someone who does that work. The noise and vibration numbers in UK law are markers, not readings from these tools.
