Bosch 230 mm angle grinder buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are about to order a first large Bosch grinder for a drive, a workshop or a site, and the number 230 means three different things on the page in front of you. It can be the disc, the UK mains, or a spec cell Amazon has filled in. This Bosch 230 mm angle grinder buying guide is the check you do before you sort the five listings by price. The [Bosch angle grinder 230 comparison](/hub/tools/bosch-angle-grinder-230) lines those amazon.co.uk rows up. Match the rating plate and the switch family first. Shelf prices were captured on 19 October 2026. Peter F. used those listings, Bosch UK pages and public UK safety notes, not a lab test.

What 230 has to match

On these tools, 230 mm is the disc, the size UK shops also call 9 inch. Household mains are 230 V with a BS 1363 plug. GWS 20-230 and GWS 22-230 look like voltage codes. They are disc codes. Bosch UK lists the GWS 20-230 P, order number 0 601 8C1 171, and the GWS 22-230 P, order number 0 601 8C1 170, as 230 V tools. The GWS 2200 P, order number 0 601 8F4 160, is rated for 102–117 V, and ASIN B0BX469M7J is the only title here that states 110 V. A yellow site transformer belongs on the 110 V or 230 V page. Two tables print 120 V, on the GWS 22-230 J (B09Q386PS3) and the GWS 22-230 P (B09RTDWBHJ). A UK verified review of the P model, dated 10 April 2023, says the tool arrived as 230 V with a UK 3-pin plug. Treat 120 V as a conflict, not as a third supply.

J or P, and 2,000 W or 2,200 W

The letter after the disc size is the switch. J models here are the GWS 20-230 J and the GWS 22-230 J. Bosch’s English family manual marks starting-current limitation and restart protection on the J column. Buyers call that a soft start. P models use the PROtection switch, which stops the motor when you release it. The same manual marks those J features as absent on the GWS 20-230 P. The GWS 20-230 pair is 2,000 W. The GWS 22-230 pair and the 110 V GWS 2200 P are 2,200 W. An extra 200 W helps in stone. It does not add a brake or KickBack Control. Who each listing is for is on the best Bosch 230 mm angle grinder page.

What is actually in the carton

Every kept listing ships the grinder, a side handle, a guard, a backing flange, a locking nut and a two-hole spanner, in cardboard. None includes a disc, a case, or the GDE 230 FC-S dust guard. The family manual’s bore is 22.2 mm. Diamond discs are sold as 22.23 mm. Listed mass on the domestic tools is about 5.3–5.5 kg, so this is a two-handed machine. The 110 V listing prints 1.62 kg. Bosch UK says 5.3 kg for that order number, so do not use 1.62 kg.

A five-line check before you order

Confirm a 230 mm disc whose marked speed is at least 6,500 rpm, the no-load figure Bosch UK and the J listings use. Choose J for soft start and restart protection on a 13 A socket, or P if the motor must stop when you let go and you can accept a harder start. Decide whether 2,000 W is enough, or whether 2,200 W and the vibration-control handle are worth moving from £115.81 to £156.07. Add a disc, and for concrete a dust plan, because the carton has the guard and the spanner and nothing that cuts.

Where the shelf sits

The shelf runs from the GWS 22-230 J at £115.81 (4.8 from 183 ratings) to the GWS 22-230 P at £156.07 (4.3 from 26). The GWS 20-230 P’s eight ratings are too few to read as durability. Those stars are amazon.co.uk aggregates, and many long reviews are written outside the UK. If a line on the check fails, stop before you pay.

Common questions

Is 230 the disc or the mains voltage?
On these model names, 230 is the disc diameter in millimetres. UK household mains are also 230 V, which is a separate line on the rating plate and on the Bosch UK pages for the GWS 20-230 P and GWS 22-230 P. The GWS 2200 P at B0BX469M7J is the 110 V site tool, rated by Bosch for 102–117 V. If an amazon table says 120 V on a GWS 22-230, treat that cell as disputed.
What is the difference between the GWS 20-230 J and the GWS 20-230 P?
Both are 2,000 W grinders for a 230 mm disc. The J listing prints 230 V, 6,500 rpm and 5.3 kg, and the family manual gives J models soft start and restart protection. The P model stops when you release the switch, and the manual marks those J features as absent. Amazon’s P listing omits voltage, though Bosch UK sells order number 0 601 8C1 171 as 230 V at £129 including VAT. The J is £145.00.
Is 2,200 W worth it over 2,000 W?
It is worth it when the disc is in stone or concrete and you want the vibration-control handle on the GWS 22-230 J or GWS 22-230 P. It is a weaker reason if the cuts are short and the switch matters more. The J model is £115.81 and has the soft start. The P model is £156.07 and a UK review says it kicks on start.
Does the box include a disc or a case?
No. Each carton has the grinder, a side handle, a guard, a backing flange, a locking nut, a two-hole spanner and cardboard. You still buy a 230 mm disc with a 22.2 mm bore, sold on diamond blades as 22.23 mm, rated to at least 6,500 rpm. The GDE 230 FC-S dust guard is a separate accessory at about £175.94, and it needs an extractor.
Why do two listings say 120 V?
The spec tables for the GWS 22-230 J and the GWS 22-230 P print 120 V. A UK verified review of the P model on 10 April 2023 says the tool was 230 V with a UK 3-pin plug, and Bosch UK lists that order number as 230 V. Do not hide the cell, and do not treat 120 V as a safe middle. The GWS 20-230 J is the domestic row here that already prints 230 V.
What else must I budget for?
A cutting disc, and for concrete the controls in HSE guidance: on-tool extraction in M or H class and respiratory protection at APF 20 or better. The Bosch multi-material turbo at 230 mm is £39.66 and is described for soft stone, brick, roof tiles and concrete, not as a porcelain specialist. The dust guard can cost more than the grinder. Star counts do not include those extras.
