110 V or 230 V Bosch angle grinder

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have either a UK 13 A socket or a yellow site transformer, and a Bosch grinder for a 230 mm disc is in the basket. On the model name, 230 is the disc. On a house lead, 230 V is the mains. Two amazon.co.uk tables say 120 V. One listing really is a 110 V site tool. This 110 V or 230 V Bosch angle grinder page matches the rating plate to the supply you have. Do not improvise with an adapter. The [Bosch angle grinder 230 comparison](/hub/tools/bosch-angle-grinder-230) holds all five rows. Peter F. used the amazon.co.uk listings, Bosch UK order pages and HSE construction guidance, not a plug test in a lab.

Two different 230s

A GWS 20-230 or GWS 22-230 is a Bosch Professional grinder for a 230 mm disc. That 230 does not tell you the plug. UK household mains are 230 V, and a tool for that supply needs a BS 1363 plug. HSE’s guidance on construction electrics says a DIY-style 230 V plug is not the default for site conditions. The reduced-voltage route is 110 V centre-tapped to earth, so the voltage to earth is 55 V. The only kept title that states 110 V is the GWS 2200 P, ASIN B0BX469M7J, at £153.60. The GWS 20-230 J prints 230 V. The GWS 22-230 J and the GWS 22-230 P print 120 V. Diameter and the empty carton are on the buying guide.

When the yellow plug is the right one

Buy the 110 V tool when the supply is a site transformer with a yellow outlet. Bosch UK lists the GWS 2200 P, order number 0 601 8F4 160, at 110 V in a 102–117 V range, 2,200 W and 5.3 kg, with a PROtection switch that stops when you release it. The star line is 5.0 from one review, and the text is Good, so you are buying the voltage match, not a durability record. There is no disc. The amazon weight cell prints 1.62 kg. Bosch UK’s figure is 5.3 kg. Use 5.3 kg. Skip B0BX469M7J if you only have a 13 A socket. The higher current at 110 V is a rule of thumb, not a weaker motor.

When a normal socket is the right one

A normal UK socket wants a 230 V tool and a BS 1363 plug. Bosch UK lists the GWS 20-230 P (0 601 8C1 171) and the GWS 22-230 P (0 601 8C1 170) at 230 V. The GWS 22-230 P is £156.07. Its table says 120 V. A UK verified review dated 10 April 2023 says that line is wrong: the tool arrived as 230 V with a UK 3-pin plug and kicks because there is no soft start. The GWS 20-230 J at £145.00 is the domestic row that already prints 230 V, at 2,000 W and 6,500 rpm. Which J or P switch suits the cut is on the best Bosch 230 mm angle grinder page.

What not to improvise

Do not plan an adapter. A 110 V yellow plug does not belong in a 13 A wall socket, and a 230 V BS 1363 plug does not belong on a 110 V transformer. Cutting a plug off is outside anything HSE or Bosch describes here. If the plate and the plug disagree, stop and have the tool checked. At home, use a 30 mA RCD for outdoor work with a 230 V grinder. INDG231 treats reduced voltage as a main control on construction sites. An RCD does not turn a 110 V tool into a house tool. Yellow site supply, buy B0BX469M7J. A 13 A socket, buy a 230 V listing and confirm the plate, with the GWS 20-230 J the row that already prints 230 V.

Common questions

Can the 110 V GWS 2200 P go into a 13 A socket?
No. B0BX469M7J is the site tool Bosch UK rates for 102–117 V. A UK 13 A socket is 230 V. Do not use an adapter and do not cut the plug off. If you only have a house socket, choose a 230 V listing and read the plate.
Is 110 V less powerful at the same 2,200 W?
No. The GWS 2200 P is 2,200 W, the same class as the GWS 22-230 models. HSE’s reason for 110 V centre-tapped-to-earth is 55 V to earth, not a weaker motor. As a rule of thumb, the same watts means a higher current, so lead length matters more. That is not a reason to run the tool from a 13 A socket.
What is centre-tapped-to-earth in one sentence?
A 110 V site supply that is centre-tapped to earth puts about 55 V between either live conductor and earth, which is the reduced-voltage system HSE describes as a main electrical control. It is not a 110 V plug pushed into a 230 V wall socket, and it is not the same thing as a 30 mA RCD on a household circuit.
Why does Amazon say 120 V on the GWS 22-230 P?
The spec table for B09RTDWBHJ prints 120 V. A UK verified review on 10 April 2023 says the tool arrived as 230 V with a UK 3-pin plug, and Bosch UK lists order number 0 601 8C1 170 as 230 V. Keep both facts and read the plate. The GWS 22-230 J table has the same 120 V cell, without that UK review attached.
Which listing already prints 230 V?
The GWS 20-230 J, ASIN B09Q38SBQN, at £145.00, is the row whose listing prints 230 V. It is 2,000 W and 6,500 rpm. Bosch UK also prints 230 V for the GWS 20-230 P and GWS 22-230 P order numbers, even though one amazon listing omits voltage and the other says 120 V. The plate on the tool you unpack still outranks the cell.
Do I need an RCD at home?
For outdoor work with a 230 V grinder, use an RCD at no more than 30 mA. That is the figure HSE cites when 230 V is used in construction, and it is the control to use on a house circuit outside. It does not replace a 110 V centre-tapped supply on a site, and it does not make B0BX469M7J safe in a 13 A socket.
