Thermostatic radiator valve buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You are about to order a thermostatic radiator valve, or a replacement head, and amazon.co.uk will mix three different products under one search. A cracked dial on a sound body is not the same purchase as a weeping nut, and neither is an app schedule. Match the type, the thread, the pattern, and the room that already has the wall thermostat. Prices and the twelve rows sit on the [radiator thermostat comparison](/hub/thermostats/radiator-thermostat). Peter F., DIY & tools editor, checked those listings in October 2026. There was no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Head, set, or smart head

If the dial is cracked or stiff and the brass body is dry, you need a replacement head: the Honeywell Home Thera-5 at about £22.45, the Manissa head at about £4.00, or a two-pack around £9.59 to £9.99. None of those cartons includes a valve body. A weeping nut, a seized body, or a new radiator needs a body, a head, and a lockshield. The lockshield balances the radiator. It is not the evening dial. Corner sets here include the VANCOCO two-pack at about £49.99 and the UK Radiators STI-TRV-FBC at about £24.80. Angled sets include the SVNR at about £24.99 and the Talus Bold at about £29.95. The chrome straight set is the Marella at about £21.99. An app schedule is a third purchase. Only the tado° X trio, at about £159.08, is consistently an app product here: three heads and adapters, not a 15 mm body, and the title says it does not work with a V3+ system. The hub sits on the TRV or smart radiator valve page.

Thread, pipe size, and pattern

Heads in this set are sold as M30 x 1.5. The Thera-5 states that thread. The Manissa size line says M30, 50 mm wide by 85 mm high. LJAPPLIED, Rivvra, and DYOUen also say M30 x 1.5. Drayton’s Wiser note treats that as the common UK nut on many Drayton, Honeywell, Pegler, Myson, and Siemens bodies. It is not every body. A Danfoss RA valve needs a different adapter, and Yi kai reviews say the M30 nut missed older Siemens and Westherm valves. Press the pin. If it springs back, a head can reach it. If the collar misses the pin, the radiator will not modulate. Valve sets here are 1/2 inch by 15 mm. Toasty treats 15 mm as the usual UK copper size. One UK Radiators corner review limits that set to copper rather than multilayer. Straight, angled, and corner are shapes, not sizes. Which listing is which is on the angled or straight radiator valve page. Check the finish against a towel rail: one SVNR grey did not match, and chrome will not disappear on a matt black rail.

The room with the wall thermostat

Do not fit a TRV in the same room as the wall thermostat. BEAMA’s factsheet, explaining Approved Document L for a boiler replacement in England and Wales, asks for a wall thermostat in one room and TRVs in the others. A TRV in the thermostat’s room can shut the radiator while the wall control is still calling, so the boiler runs on. A TRV is not boiler interlock. The dates are England from 15 June 2022 and Wales from 23 November 2022, when a heat generator is replaced. A radiator-only swap is good practice in the BEAMA Part L guide, not a rule for every UK nation tomorrow. Scotland and Northern Ireland publish their own standards, and the 2026 index of Approved Document L is on GOV.UK. Energy Saving Trust’s everyday point: dial numbers are not one Celsius scale, start in the middle, keep a little heat in unused rooms, and do not cover the head.

What a listing claim is worth

Quote EN 215 only where the listing states it. BS EN 215:2019 covers two-port thermostatic radiator valves up to 120 °C and PN 10. A line on amazon.co.uk is a claim unless a certificate names the model. The Thera-5 bullet claims EN 215. The VANCOCO specification field names EN 215 and TELL. CE on the Manissa, the UK Radiators corner set, and the Marella is not that claim. The SVNR, Talus Bold, and the cheap two-packs do not name EN 215. Trust the bullet over a conflicting attribute block. The Thera-5 bullet is a mechanical liquid-sensor head, while attributes say Wi-Fi. LJAPPLIED bullets are a mechanical 0 to 5 head, while attributes say Zigbee. DYOUen’s title is six screw-on heads, while attributes mention an LCD, and the reviews do not mention a screen. The SVNR set-name field says Set of 20, while the title is one angled set. The Thera-5 has 1,176 ratings and the Manissa head has 689. The Talus Bold has 10, the UK Radiators corner set 23, and the Rivvra pair 3.

Common questions

Do I need a new valve body or just a head?
If the pin springs back and the joint is dry, a head is the part that failed. The Thera-5 box is one head, model T5019W0, with no body. If the nut weeps, the body is seized, or you are fitting a new radiator, you need a set with a lockshield. Opening that joint is a drain, and it is a stop point for a first attempt.
What thread is on the old body?
Look at the nut, not the amazon attribute block. M30 x 1.5 is the thread named on the Thera-5 and on several cheap heads here. A review of the Yi kai pair says that nut missed older Siemens and Westherm bodies. Danfoss RA is a different adapter, on Drayton’s own note, and it is not what these listings claim to include.
Can I fit a TRV next to the wall thermostat?
No. BEAMA’s explanation of the England and Wales boiler-replacement guidance keeps the wall thermostat’s room free of a competing TRV. Put the TRV in the other rooms. A TRV does not provide boiler interlock on its own.
Does CE mean BS EN 215?
No. CE on the Manissa, Marella, or UK Radiators corner listing is not the EN 215 line. Only the Thera-5 bullet and the VANCOCO specification field name EN 215 in this set, and even those lines are claims on a listing, not a certificate in the box.
Why do some cheap heads say Zigbee?
Because the attribute block and the bullet disagree. LJAPPLIED and DYOUen carry smart-looking attributes while the bullets and the reviews describe mechanical heads. Read the bullet, then read a review that says what the radiator actually did. Do not buy a £9.99 pair as an app product.
When is £4.00 a sensible head?
When you already know the body is M30, you can hand-tighten the Manissa head, and you will test that the pin still moves. It is poor value if the plunger misses the pin, which reviewers report, or if you needed a 15 mm body and a lockshield. The main comparison holds the other prices if the £4 head is the wrong type.
