You still have the Nest on the wall, and the phone no longer treats it as a live product. Nest thermostat support ended in the UK, for the generations Google named, on 25 October 2025. The Nest app and the Home app drop the 1st gen, the 2nd gen, and the 2014 Europe 2nd gen. The boiler can stay where it is. Google's help says on-device temperature and schedules can remain. A replacement that ignores your cable, or a budget built on a US and Canada 4th-gen offer, spends money on the wrong checkout.

This page is from Peter F., editor for DIY & tools at productscompared.co.uk. We used Google's Nest help in en-GB, the Which? report of the same change, and the amazon.co.uk prices stored for our Alexa thermostat comparison. We did not lab-test a Nest or name a day when the dial goes dark. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

In short

From 25 October 2025, Google's help says the 1st gen, 2nd gen, and 2014 Europe Nest Learning Thermostat leave the Nest and Home apps. Temperature and schedules can still be used on the device. Which? reported that the 3rd gen and the Thermostat E continue, and that no new Nest thermostats are launching in Europe. Match the wires before you buy.

The date, and which Nest models left the apps

The date to remember is 25 October 2025. Google's Nest help, in its en-GB version, says the 1st generation, the 2nd generation, and the 2014 Europe 2nd generation Nest Learning Thermostat leave the Nest app and the Home app. Keep that as an app date. A guess about the day the boiler stops is a different claim, and the sources used here do not make it.

Which? reported the same date and a second line. The 3rd generation and the Thermostat E were described as still supported. If that is the model on your wall, you can leave it there. No new Nest thermostats launching in Europe means Google is not bringing out a fresh Nest for this market. That is a fact about future shopping, not a fault on the unit you already own.

Name the generation before you spend. A 2014 unit bought in Europe can be the Europe 2nd gen on Google's list while a later Nest in the same app still appears. Write the generation down. The 4th-gen route for the US and Canada is the offer a UK postcode does not unlock.

What you can still do on the device

Google's help says on-device temperature and schedules can remain after those models leave the apps. You can keep that arrangement and buy nothing. Remote edits in the Nest app and the Home app are what those generations lose. The radiator still answers the device you can touch, for as long as that device calls for heat.

The help text used here does not name a later day when the dial goes dark, so this page will not invent one. If the screen is already blank, the line about a remaining schedule does not describe your unit. You are then replacing a failed control, which is a different job from an app that has closed.

Keeping the Nest and buying nothing

Keeping it is a sound option when the dial still changes the temperature and the schedule on the device still matches how you live. The cost is the phone: you lose the Nest and Home path for that generation, and any assumption that a voice assistant still reaches that old Nest.

The option weakens when nobody can reach the dial, or when the times are wrong and the phone can no longer correct them. If the temperature still moves and the times are frozen, decide whether those times are acceptable this season. A frost setting you can still reach may cover an empty week. A 06:00 start that heats an empty house is a reason to move.

Offers that are not a UK price

Google's help describes a 4th-generation offer for the United States and Canada. Searches for nest thermostat support ended uk often meet a dollar figure beside it. One figure that keeps turning up in those questions is a US $149 trade-in. That number is not an amazon.co.uk price. This page does not sell it, convert it, or promise a British address can claim it. Budget from a price on amazon.co.uk, or from a UK installer quote that names the same product.

Which? reported that affected users were offered 50% off tado X. That was an offer for people hit by the support change, not a code to assume at checkout today. Our stored amazon.co.uk price for the tado Wireless Smart Thermostat X starter, ASIN B0D9QBPV51, is about £129.99. The tado Smart Thermostat X wired add-on, ASIN B0CWPG6G5W, is stored at about £79.99. An add-on leaves you short when you needed the starter.

Moving to tado X brings a further rule from tado's own help. Matter applies, and with it a border-router requirement. The top pick on our Alexa thermostat comparison is the tado V3+ wireless starter kit, ASIN B08LP1LS5T, stored at about £57.50. That UK shelf price is separate from the 50% Which? described for tado X, and stored prices can move.

How to choose a replacement without guessing the wires

The costly mistake is a stat that cannot land on the cable you have. Count the conductors at the thermostat end and photograph them without opening the boiler. If the joints are inside the case, leave that to someone allowed to open it. A starter that brings its own receiver is a different purchase from a dial that expects the existing switching unit to stay.

A product title is not that count. The Beok two-wire combi thermostat, ASIN B0FHW6PTPM, is stored at about £42.99. A reviewer bought that style of two-wire Beok as a replacement for a 1st gen Nest, and the complaint that followed was battery life. A two-wire unit can be the right fork when the cable really is two-wire. The Beok wireless boiler thermostat, ASIN B0H2CR3V79, is a different row at about £62.99. The Alexa thermostat buying guide separates wiring from the voice logo.

Rows that answer a different job

The KETOTEK electric underfloor thermostat, ASIN B0833N4ZZ3, is stored at about £44.99 for electric underfloor heating. A Nest that switched a boiler is a different job. The KETOTEK boiler thermostat rated 3 A, ASIN B08FHWJY7L, is also stored at about £44.99, and it is the best value row. The 3 A figure is the switching limit on that listing. It does not prove the terminals match the Nest you are removing.

Hive is two stored prices. The Hive thermostat with the Nano 3 hub, ASIN B0DCGMD9KX, is about £164.99. The Hive thermostat with the hub not included, ASIN B0DCGNQ17S, is about £104.96. The lower figure omits the hub, so with no Hive hub in the house the cheaper row is an incomplete kit. If the Nest also ran hot water, say so before you buy a heating-only dial. A cylinder is a different layout from a combi. The combi boiler controls page holds that split.

What this comparison can and cannot decide

Our Alexa thermostat comparison can show a shortlist with stored UK prices, a top pick, and a best value row. It cannot see the backplate. The best thermostats page writes the shortlist out. Open it after the generation and the cable are known. Alexa on a new stat is a skill inside Amazon's assistant. It does not restore the Nest app or replay every Google Assistant command from the old dial.

There is no Nest ASIN in this set. Which? reported that Europe is not getting a new Nest thermostat to replace the models leaving the apps. Where the 3rd gen and the Thermostat E remain supported, those owners stay with that support. The basket is for a wall unit you have decided to change.

Keep a working 1st gen, 2nd gen, or 2014 Europe dial and run temperature and schedule on the device, or replace it with a stat whose wires, hub, and hot-water job match the house. Photograph the conductors, name the generation, and check the dial still does temperature and schedule. If the joints sit inside the boiler, hand that part to an installer.

Common questions

Which Nest models lost the Nest and Home apps?
From 25 October 2025, Google's Nest help says the 1st gen, the 2nd gen, and the 2014 Europe 2nd gen Nest Learning Thermostat leave the Nest and Home apps. That is the list this page uses. The 3rd gen and the Thermostat E sit outside it. Which? reported those two as still supported. Check the generation on your own unit before you buy, because a neighbour's model says nothing about yours. Leaving the apps is the change Google described. This page does not add a day when the dial stops controlling the boiler.
Does the boiler still run from the dial?
Google's help says on-device temperature and schedules can remain for the generations that leave the apps. If the dial still calls for heat, the boiler can keep running from that dial and from a schedule stored on the device. What you lose is remote editing in the Nest app and the Home app. A blank screen means the control has failed, which is separate from the app change. This page does not name a later date for the hardware. If the ring no longer changes the temperature, treat that as a fault.
Is the 3rd gen included in the support end?
Which? reported that the 3rd gen and the Thermostat E continue to be supported. They are outside the Google list used here, which names the 1st gen, the 2nd gen, and the 2014 Europe 2nd gen. If your thermostat is a 3rd gen or a Thermostat E, this article is not a reason to replace it. Confirm the model on the device or in the account before you act on a headline written for the older units. One home can have an older Nest affected and a later Nest left on support.
Do I get the US trade-in in Britain?
Google's help describes a 4th-generation offer for the United States and Canada. Questions about that offer often mention a US $149 trade-in. That figure is not an amazon.co.uk price, and a British address does not turn it into a UK voucher. This page will not convert dollars into a basket total. Budget from a stored UK price, such as about £57.50 for the tado V3+ wireless starter kit, or from an installer quote in pounds. A US help page stays a US offer.
What should I check on the cable before I buy?
Count the conductors at the thermostat and photograph them before you pay. Note whether a switching unit already sits by the boiler, because a starter with its own receiver is a different kit from a dial that expects the old unit to stay. Leave any joint inside the boiler to someone allowed to open the case. In this set, the Beok two-wire combi thermostat at about £42.99 and the Beok wireless boiler thermostat at about £62.99 are different rows. A title that says two-wire only helps after you have counted.
Will Alexa work the way Google Assistant did?
A new thermostat in the Alexa comparison can use an Alexa skill. That skill is a path inside Amazon's assistant. It does not restore the Nest app or the Home app for a 1st gen, 2nd gen, or 2014 Europe model, and it does not replay every Google Assistant command you used before. Read the product's own note on what voice can reach, including hot water if you need it. It is a shop comparison, not a copy of your old routines.
Can I keep the Nest and buy nothing?
Yes, when the dial still sets the temperature and a schedule on the device still suits the house. Google's help allows on-device temperature and schedules to remain after the named models leave the apps. You can add no new stat at all. The limit is the phone: remote changes go with the apps. If the times are frozen and wrong, or the screen is blank, keeping it only delays a replacement. When you do replace it, count the cable first so the new unit matches the wires you have.
Does no new Nest in Europe mean my 3rd gen has stopped?
Which? reported two separate points. The 3rd gen and the Thermostat E continue, and no new Nest thermostats are launching in Europe. The second point means a fresh Nest is not arriving in this market to replace an older one. It does not switch off a 3rd gen that Which? described as still supported. If your unit is 1st gen, 2nd gen, or the 2014 Europe model, the app change applies to you. If it is a 3rd gen, stay with the support Which? said continues.
