Alexa thermostat buying guide: match the control to your heating

Updated: October 2026

An Alexa thermostat buying guide should begin at the boiler, not at the Echo. Voice control is available on many models, but the wrong receiver, a missing neutral or an absent hub can leave an otherwise suitable thermostat unusable. Before you choose a brand, identify whether you have a combi boiler, a system with a hot-water cylinder, electric underfloor heating or a wet underfloor circuit. Then inspect what the listing actually includes. The [Alexa thermostat comparison](/hub/thermostats/alexa-thermostat) shows the products side by side. This guide helps you choose the right type before comparing prices.

What you are actually buying

A smart thermostat can describe four purchases. A boiler starter kit normally contains a room sensor, a receiver that switches the boiler, and any bridge needed for internet access. The tado V3+ starter lists the sensor, wireless receiver and Internet Bridge. The Hive kit with the Nano 3 hub includes that hub. The separate Hive listing leaves the hub out. An add-on is not a starter. The wired tado X, ASIN B0CWPG6G5W, needs a Bridge X or another Thread border router. tado X and V3+ do not mix. The KETOTEK KTF0155C switches a boiler through a 3 A dry contact and needs live and neutral. The Beok listing is titled as a two-wire combi thermostat. The KETOTEK KTF0155A is a 16 A electric-underfloor controller with a floor probe, not a boiler control.

Wires, hub and Wi-Fi

Photograph the old thermostat wiring and the boiler model. Wire count alone does not prove compatibility. A battery thermostat may have two switching conductors and no neutral. A Wi-Fi wall control often needs permanent live and neutral as well. The KETOTEK boiler model says it cannot replace a two-wire or battery-only thermostat. The Beok two-wire model is built for that cable. Wireless usually means the radio link between the room sensor and the receiver. The receiver can still need mains at the boiler. Check the hub line word for word. Hive with a Nano 3 hub includes it. The no-hub Hive listing does not. tado V3+ includes an Internet Bridge. The tado X wireless starter says Receiver X connects without a separate hub. The wired X add-on needs a Thread border router. Smart Life thermostats commonly need 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi during setup. On the KETOTEK products, Alexa changes temperature or switches heating on and off, while the weekly programme stays in Smart Life. Pairing steps are in how to connect a thermostat to Alexa.

Hot water and OpenTherm

For a combi, heating only is often the correct job, because tap water is heated on demand. The Hive kit with the Nano 3 hub is explicitly heating only. That can suit a combi, and it is the wrong box when a cylinder needs a separate channel. The tado V3+ title includes a hot-water programmer. The tado X wireless starter lists hot water in the app, but tado’s Alexa guidance says domestic hot water is not controlled over Matter. OpenTherm lets a compatible boiler and controller exchange a varying heat demand rather than a simple on/off call. It does not prove a saving in your home. Hive describes it for a compatible single-zone installation. The Alexa thermostat for a combi boiler page stays on that building type.

When you should not fit it yourself

App setup and schedule changes are reasonable once the hardware is installed. Mains wiring and boiler controls are separate from pairing an app. Stop if the old wiring has no clear labels, the boiler manual does not confirm the control type, or the receiver diagram conflicts with what is present. Opening a boiler case can fall under gas-safety rules.

Common questions

Do I need the hub in the box?
You need the connection method required by that exact product, but it may already be in your home. A first Hive purchase generally needs a compatible Hive hub, whereas an existing Hive household may choose the no-hub listing. tado V3+ uses its Internet Bridge. tado X uses Thread and Matter infrastructure and does not mix with V3+.
Will a heating-only kit run my hot-water cylinder?
No, not if the cylinder needs a separate programmed channel. A heating-only Hive kit is intended to control space heating. Choose a kit whose exact listing and installation documentation include stored-hot-water control, rather than relying on a general brand page that mentions hot water.
Can I replace a two-wire thermostat with any Wi-Fi model?
No. Many Wi-Fi wall thermostats require live and neutral in addition to switching connections. The KETOTEK KTF0155C explicitly says it cannot replace a two-wire thermostat. The Beok two-wire listing names a two-wire combi application, but you must still confirm boiler compatibility.
Is an electric-underfloor thermostat the same as a boiler thermostat?
No. The KETOTEK KTF0155A directly controls an electric heating load up to 16 A and includes a floor probe. Its KTF0155C boiler counterpart uses a dry contact rated to 3 A. Similar screens and apps do not make their electrical jobs interchangeable.
Does Alexa create the weekly heating schedule?
Usually the manufacturer’s app stores and runs the schedule. Alexa commonly provides temperature changes, on/off control or a temporary boost. Check the integration documentation because commands differ: tado X uses Matter, Hive uses its skill, and Smart Life products use the relevant account-linked skill.
When should I call a professional?
Call a competent heating professional when the receiver needs boiler-side wiring, the existing terminals are unclear, or compatibility is uncertain. Use a Gas Safe registered engineer where work requires opening or altering a gas appliance. Do not treat instructions for linking Alexa as authority to open the boiler.
