When UK gardens close an above-ground pool

A UK guide from Nature is Calling closes frame pools from late September to mid-October, once the water stays below about 15°C. Both figures belong to that guide. This page does not count frost days, and it does not turn 15°C into a law. The same guide says wind often matters more than ice on a frame pool. A pillow does not strap a cover down. If the sheet is lifting, you still need the cover’s own anchors, used the way the pool maker allows. A cable that would bend an upright is a reason to stop, not a reason to add more air. You are deciding three things. Will this pool stay up, or will you pack it away? Is the cover sealed, or does it have drain holes? Who is in the garden when you are not? The Royal Life Saving Society UK says a winter cover is not a safety cover. A pillow under it does not change that sentence.

A sealed cover

On a sealed winter cover, the pillow is doing the job the shops describe. World of Pools sells a pillow for a non-porous debris cover and says inflate to about 50 percent so the sheet can shed water. Oasis lists debris covers beside an air pillow at £42 and a siphon. Those are shop pairings, not a test of the Biigdan or EPN listings. The shared idea is a crown in the centre, plus a way to remove water that still collects. A pillow reduces the pond. It does not repeal rain.

Drain holes, or pack the pool away

Many Intex and Bestway covers have drain holes. If the cover already lets rain through, the pillow is less about stopping a lake on top and more about keeping the sheet from sagging into a belly. You may still want that crown. You should not buy a large pillow only because a solid-cover advert showed one. Holes in the sheet are a different product from a sealed debris cover, even when both are blue. A small Easy Set is the third case. The same UK guide says drain it and store it. A pillow does not turn a pool that should be packed away into one that should stand all winter. If the frame comes down, there is no water for a cushion to float on. Skip the pillow when the pool is going into storage. Creases in a stored liner are a packing problem, not an inflation problem. Standing water on a solid cover is still a shallow pool. Siphon it or pump it off. Do not smash ice, and do not walk to the middle because the pillow makes the sheet look firm. The fit page has the order: soft fill, slack ropes, cover resting on the water around the pillow. This page only decides whether you are in the sealed-cover case at all.

What the cover still will not do

The cover will not supervise a child. The Royal Life Saving Society UK, citing a September 2024 update, says 86 percent of child drownings happened without adult supervision, and it asks for fencing at least 4 feet high. Those figures are about water safety, not about which pillow scored 4.7. A winter cover is not a floor, and a pillow under it is not a floor. If someone is under the cover, call 999. A £23 or £38 cushion is not a control. The pillow also does not, on the evidence in this set, stop a wall cracking if the pool freezes. Makers say a soft centre absorbs expansion. Ice being about 9 percent less dense than water only supports the idea of expansion. It is not a test that any ASIN saved a wall. No listing attaches a freeze trial. Reviewers of the 4 × 8 ft Biigdan leave the winter open. A German review of the long Biigdan says that pillow was flat within 12 hours, which is the opposite of a cushion still there in a freeze. Do not claim the pillow prevents all winter damage. The narrower job the sources agree on is this: it holds the cover up in the centre, if it stays inflated and if you tied it.

Common questions

Do I need a pillow if my Intex cover has drain holes?
Often less than on a sealed sheet. Many Intex and Bestway covers have drain holes, so rain is meant to pass through. A pillow can still stop the sheet sagging into a belly. It is not doing the full job of keeping a lake off a solid cover. If the pool is a small Easy Set you will pack away, you do not need one at all.
When should I close the pool in the UK?
Nature is Calling suggests late September to mid-October, once the water stays below about 15°C. That is one guide, not a national rule, and this page adds no frost-day count. Wind on a frame pool is, in that guide, often the larger threat. Close when you can work in the dry, at the waterline your manual gives. The pillow is fitted at closing. It is not a reason to wait for ice.
Does the pillow stop the cover blowing off?
No. The pillow crowns the sheet. It does not anchor it. The cover still needs its own straps or weights, used as the pool maker allows. A cable that would bend an upright is a stop, not a tighter pillow. If the cover is already lifting, more air in the cushion will not pin it.
Is the cover safe for a child to walk on?

Do I still need a siphon or a cover pump?
On a sealed cover, yes. World of Pools and Oasis sell that job beside the pillow, at £38.40 and £42 for their own pillows, not for these ASINs. The crown pushes water outwards. It does not empty the garden. A drain-hole cover may need less siphoning on top. Do not smash ice to move the water.
Does the pillow stop the walls cracking if the pool freezes?
You should not claim that. Makers say a soft centre gives ice room to compress, and ice is about 9 percent less dense than water, which only supports expansion. These pillows were not winter-tested. One long Biigdan review describes a pillow flat within 12 hours. Hold the cover up in the centre if the pillow stays inflated. Ask the pool maker if a wall is already leaning.
