Round vs rectangular pool pillow

Updated: October 2026

You have a round, an oval or a rectangular above-ground pool, and the listings offer a round, a square and a long rectangle as if the shape were a style. Round versus rectangular is a fit question. The pillow sits in the centre and is smaller than the pool. Shop charts, not a British Standard, sort that centre into three footprints. Thickness and badges stay on the [pool cushion comparison](/hub/swimming-pools/pool-cushion) and the [pool pillow buying guide](/hub/swimming-pools/pool-cushion/sub/pool-cushion-buying-guide). Who should open which listing is on the [best pool pillow](/hub/swimming-pools/pool-cushion/sub/pool-cushion-best) page. Prices were captured on 15 October 2026.

What the charts actually compare

Poolweb, Active Pool Supply and Pool Research describe one centred pillow, not a mattress over the water. The small footprint is about 4 × 4 ft or 4 × 5 ft. The middle one is about 4 × 8 ft. The long one is about 4 × 15 ft. A second pillow is a maximum, not the default. Four by four feet is about 1.22 m. Four by eight is about 1.22 × 2.44 m. Four by fifteen is about 1.22 × 4.57 m. For a mid oval, shortlist the 240 × 120 cm rectangle. For a small round, shortlist a 4 × 4 ft class pillow only when the specification line agrees with the title. For a very long pool, the 450 × 120 cm listing sits near 4 × 15 ft. Shape does not change the fill percent. How full to leave it is a fitting question.

Small squares and titles that do not agree

The smallest stated square is HNsdsvcd, B0F3GBKLKC, at £9.79. It is 120 × 120 cm, about the 4 × 4 ft class. A UK review says a large pool needs more than one, and that it went down twice. Use one only as a centre piece on a small pool you measured. Bztezml, B0HFVN21WB at £17.99, says 4 × 4 ft and prints no centimetres. Weight is 340 g, and there is no star line. Mineup, B0HBX5BGG4 at £16.99, says 4 F with no centimetres. Do not read that as 4 ft. Weiyidea, B0FYCV61Z8 at £7.67, is titled about 4 × 4 ft while the size field says 33 cm. Both stored UK reviews describe a spa lid. Leave it off the chart.

The large square and the wide rounds

The EPN, B0GXZMTLH7 at £23.74, is 2.4 × 2.4 m, also written as 8 ft × 8 ft. A 4 × 4 ft pillow is about 1.22 m a side. Divide 2.4 by 1.22 and square the result and you get about 3.9, so this square has about four times the area of a 4 × 4 ft pillow. That is conversion maths, not a tape on the EPN. It is not the same object as a 4 × 8 ft rectangle. UK bodies for this ASIN also describe a 4 × 4 ft pillow and hot-tub uses, so confirm the live size. Skip it on a 12–16 ft round. The Totiro rounds are the other objects the charts omit. B0GXZNPD7L is 3.6 × 3.6 m at £29.99 and 7 kg. B0GXZNXBXB is 4 × 4 m at £36.99 and 8 kg. A 4 m round is far wider than a 1.22 m centre pillow. Use one only if the pool is that wide. Stored reviews are not labelled United Kingdom, they are shared across the two ASINs, and some mention a 7-foot pillow. A giant round can be too big for a frame pool even when the line says 4.1 from 101. The rank that says number 1 does not shrink the diameter.

Rectangular pillows in the set

The rectangle that matches the chart is Biigdan 240 × 120 cm, B0FVFGS6MV at £37.99. The title says 4 × 8 ft. For a mid oval, or an 18–24 ft round where the chart wants that band, this is the shortlist. Three UK reviews describe this listing. They do not describe a finished winter, and the pump is not in the box. A German note says it slips if it is not tied before the cover goes on. That is a fitting limit, not a reason to switch to a round. The long rectangle is the other Biigdan, B0G8DFFFFC, 450 × 120 cm, titled 4 × 14.7 ft, at £57.99. That is the nearest thing to the chart’s 4 × 15 ft pillow. Shortlist it for a very long oval or a very large round, not for a 15 ft round that wanted a small pad. One UK review says it floated steadily once tied. A German review on 2 October 2026 says it was flat within 12 hours on two tries. The length can be right. The air-loss report is why length is not proof it will last.

Common questions

Do I need a round pillow for a round pool?
No. The charts put a 4 × 4 ft, 4 × 8 ft or 4 × 15 ft pillow in the centre of many rounds, and those footprints are rectangles. A round pillow is fine when its diameter is that centre piece. A 3.6 m or 4 m Totiro round is much wider than a 4 × 4 ft pad. Match the footprint, not the outline for its own sake.
What shape suits an oval?
A rectangle along the length is what the charts describe. Many ovals take about 4 × 8 ft, which here is the Biigdan 240 × 120 cm listing. Longer ovals move toward 4 × 15 ft, the 450 × 120 cm Biigdan, with the flat-within-12-hours review attached. The EPN square, 2.4 × 2.4 m, is not that long narrow crown.
Is the 2.4 m square the same as a 4 × 8 ft rectangle?
No. A 4 × 8 ft pillow is about 1.22 × 2.44 m. The EPN is 2.4 × 2.4 m. Using 1.22 m as the side of a 4 × 4 ft pillow, (2.4 ÷ 1.22) squared is about four times that area. That is a conversion, not a lab measurement. UK reviews of this ASIN also mention a 4 × 4 ft pillow, so check the live size.
When is the 4.5 × 1.2 m Biigdan the one to shortlist?
When the pool sits in the long band, about 4 × 15 ft, used for the largest rounds and long ovals. The listing is 450 × 120 cm at £57.99. It is the wrong shortlist for a 12–16 ft round. One German review says it went flat within 12 hours. Length does not cancel that report.
Can one 4 m round pillow be too big for a frame pool?
Yes. A 4 × 4 m pillow is not a centre piece on a small frame. The usual small centre on those charts is about 1.22 m across. The 4 m Totiro listing shares its 4.1 from 101 line and its hero image with the 3.6 m listing, and the stored reviews are not from the United Kingdom. Too big is a fit problem before it is a review problem.
