Pool pillow buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You are closing an above-ground pool and the amazon.co.uk title says one size while the specification line says another. A pool pillow buying guide has to settle that before you look at a badge. The pillow is an inflatable PVC cushion under the winter cover, smaller than the pool, so rain and snow can run outwards. It is not a floor. Footprint, thickness, valve and rope for the nine listings sit with the [pool cushion comparison](/hub/swimming-pools/pool-cushion). Shape sits on the [round versus rectangular pool pillow](/hub/swimming-pools/pool-cushion/sub/pool-cushion-round-vs-rectangular) page. Cover type sits on the [pool pillow winter cover](/hub/swimming-pools/pool-cushion/sub/pool-cushion-winter-cover) page. Prices were captured on 15 October 2026.

What the pillow is for

The pillow crowns the cover in the middle of the water. Makers say a soft centre gives expanding ice somewhere to compress. The US Geological Survey notes that ice is about 9 percent less dense than liquid water. That supports expansion. It is not a test of these pillows, and it is not a promise that a wall will survive a freeze. BS EN 16582-3:2015 covers domestic above-ground pools deeper than 400 mm. It is a pool standard, not a pillow certificate.

Match a footprint to the pool

Retailer charts, not a British Standard, are the rule of thumb. Active Pool Supply, The Pool Factory and Pool Research put about 4 × 4 ft or 4 × 5 ft on many 12–16 ft rounds, about 4 × 8 ft on many 18–24 ft rounds and longer ovals, and about 4 × 15 ft on rounds around 27–33 ft. The pillow sits in the centre. A second pillow is a maximum, not the usual count. Four by four feet is about 1.22 m. Four by eight is about 1.22 × 2.44 m. Four by fifteen is about 1.22 × 4.57 m. Biigdan 240 × 120 cm, B0FVFGS6MV at £37.99, agrees with its 4 × 8 ft title, so it sits on the middle band. The long Biigdan, 450 × 120 cm, B0G8DFFFFC at £57.99, is titled 4 × 14.7 ft and sits near the long band. The EPN square, B0GXZMTLH7 at £23.74, is 2.4 × 2.4 m uninflated, about an 8 ft square, not a 4 × 8 ft rectangle. The Totiro rounds are 3.6 m at £29.99 and 4 m at £36.99, wider than the usual centre pillow on a 12–16 ft frame. Do not buy the 3.6 m round for a small frame because a rank line says number 1. HNsdsvcd at £9.79 is 120 × 120 cm. A UK review says a large pool needs more than one.

Thickness, valve and rope

Quote a thickness only when the listing prints one figure. Biigdan prints 0.44 mm on both rectangles. EPN prints 0.6 mm. Mineup prints 0.5 mm. Totiro prints 0.6 mm in the main bullet and 0.5 mm on the special-features line, so you cannot quote one number. HNsdsvcd, Bztezml and Weiyidea print no millimetre. No listing attaches a test report. EPN says about 70 percent and that a pump is not included. Totiro and Bztezml say 70–80 percent. Biigdan says about 80 percent. Use the percent on the listing you buy, and stay soft. A pump is a separate purchase on the EPN listing and on both Biigdan listings. EPN includes 20 m of rope. Totiro prints 49.2 ft, about 15 m. Both Biigdan listings include a rope and two patches, with no rope length. Tie with slack. Tight ropes tear grommets. That warning is on the shop sheets, not a measurement made on these ASINs.

What to do when the listing contradicts itself

Weiyidea, B0FYCV61Z8 at £7.67, is the clearest clash. The title says about 4 × 4 ft. The size field says 33 cm, and the dimensions say 32.5 × 22 cm. Both stored UK reviews describe a spa lid. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, goods should match their description. Leave this listing off the size chart. Mineup at £16.99 says 4 F and gives no centimetres. Do not convert that into 4 ft. Bztezml at £17.99 is titled 4 × 4 ft, weighs 340 g, and has no centimetre size and no star line. The two Totiro listings share 4.1 from 101, a hero image and an opening review. None of the first 50 stored bodies is labelled United Kingdom. Do not add the two counts. When the title and the size field fight, the specification line wins. If there is no specification line, do not guess. Before you open a badge, check centimetres against the pool you measured, one thickness figure or none, a named valve and a rope, and a review that describes that size. This checklist does not crown a winner.

Common questions

What size pillow do I need for a 12 ft or 15 ft round pool?
Retailer charts put about a 4 × 4 ft or 4 × 5 ft pillow on many 12–16 ft rounds. That is a shop rule of thumb, not a British Standard. The pillow sits in the centre. In this set, only a listing whose centimetre line agrees belongs on a shortlist. A 3.6 m or 4 m round is a different object. Measure the pool before you treat a title as the fit.
Is a thicker PVC bullet a test result?
No. Biigdan prints 0.44 mm, EPN prints 0.6 mm, and Mineup prints 0.5 mm. Totiro prints both 0.5 mm and 0.6 mm. No test report is attached. A higher millimetre is a claim on the page, not a winter already survived. If two figures are printed, do not pick one and call it the thickness.
Does the box include a pump?
On the EPN listing and on both Biigdan listings, the pump is not in the box. Bztezml names a standard pump and does not list one as included. HNsdsvcd, Weiyidea and Mineup do not settle it in the raw file. Plan on a blower you already own, and follow the fill percent on the listing, about 70 to 80 percent where one is printed.
Why do two Totiro listings show the same star line?
Both show 4.1 from 101, with a shared opening review and a shared hero image. None of those bodies is labelled United Kingdom. Adding the counts would double one shelf. Use the model numbers, Pillow26-11.8 and Pillow26-13.1, if you still need to tell 3.6 m from 4 m. The £7 gap is not a separate test.
What if the title says 4 × 4 ft and the size field says 33 cm?
That is Weiyidea at £7.67. The dimensions also say 32.5 × 22 cm, and both stored UK reviews describe a spa lid. Do not place it on a 12–16 ft chart as a 4 × 4 ft pillow. If the description contradicts itself, walk away rather than averaging the two sizes.
