How to fit a pool cover

Updated: 21 October 2026

The cover is out of the bag, the forecast says rain, and the sheet already sags or slips before you have finished tea. Most failures in these UK review files are not mysterious manufacturing defects. They are the wrong fastening for your rim, a corner stretched to reach, or rain left sitting on thin vinyl. This page explains how to fit a pool cover for the debris sheets in the comparison: rope hems, drawstrings and under-pool bands. It does not re-rank models. Choose the SKU on [Pool cover](/hub/swimming-pools/pool-cover) first, then come back to the fastening you actually bought.

Know which fastening you bought

Name the fastening before you pull. Intex and Bestway branded covers here usually ship with a rope through the hem or built-in ties, plus drain holes so water does not sit on top. Spread the sheet, tighten the rope, and let rain exit through the holes. A polyethylene drawstring, Cadoal and Ousinby in this table, depends on a cord many UK reviewers say will not cinch. Pulling harder creases the film. You need weights, clips, or a different sheet. Sarini’s rectangle uses bands that pass under the pool, and reviewers say that is not a one-person job on a full pool. If the page never stated the fastening, pause. A tarp with short strings, as on SHYSBV reviews, is not fitted like an Intex hem rope. Size checks stay on the pool cover buying guide.

Lay it on, do not stretch it

Centre the cover so the overlap matches the listing. Intex 28039 mentions a 20 cm flap, and the 3 m × 2 m frame sheet mentions an 8 in overhang. Walk the perimeter before you tighten. If the sheet is visibly too small, stop. Hauling a corner is how UK reviewers tear PVC on frame pools. UK texts on the Swim Centre cover and the 10 ft Easy Set say two people make the first fit easier, so a wet corner is not dragged across a rail. Inflatables move when you lean on the ring, so brace the pool or wait for calm air. Cats show up as puncture risks on PVC. Do not use a winter-cover method from a shop blog on these thin summer sheets.

Rain, holes and wind

Drain holes on branded round covers are deliberate. They stop a pond on the vinyl, and they let insects and fine debris through. One reviewer of the Intex 8 ft sheet describes holes roughly ten-pence sized. If the centre dips, lift and adjust tension before the weight finds a corner. Frame rectangles sag in rain when holes are absent from the bullets. UK reviews on the Swim Centre sheet and on 28039 say rain weight tore corners. Empty standing water with a soft broom, or lift the edge. Do not let it freeze on the fabric. Wind shows drawstring failures first: Ousinby lifts in light wind, and Cadoal’s cord does not hold. Jackson’s Leisure warns a winter cover can slide off an inflatable ring, so do not over-tighten until something tears. Weights on a drawstring hem are a workaround, not a matched steel-rail cover.

Take it off and put it away

Rinse mud and pollen off before you fold the sheet. UK reviewers link a season’s life to drying it. Store it out of direct sun. PE film creases easily. Check seams after a windy week. Reviewers saw loose stitching on the 3 m × 2 m Intex cover. Call a pool shop for in-ground anchors, a load-rated safety cover, a bent rail, or a winter cable system. Those jobs sit outside a £10–£25 debris sheet. A cover on a paddling pool does not mean the water can stay. RoSPA still expects small pools emptied after use, because rain refills them. Supervision is on is a pool cover safe for children.

Common questions

How do I put the cover on?
Spread it evenly, attach the rope or ties at several points before you cinch, then tighten gradually while checking that drain holes are not blocked. On under-pool bands, route the elastics before you fill next season if possible. On a full pool, plan for two people.
Do I need two people?
Often, yes, for first fits on 10 ft Easy Set sheets and rectangular Swim Centre covers, according to UK reviews in these files. One person can manage a small rectangle if the pool is empty and the sheet is light.
Should rain sit on the cover or go through the holes?
Through the holes where they exist. Standing water adds weight and tears corners, especially on frame rectangles. Lift and adjust if a puddle forms.
Why did the corner split?
Usually over-tension on the wrong size, or rain weight on a corner that was already stretched. Frame 28039 reviews mention rain pushing the sheet until corners fail.
The drawstring does nothing. What now?
Stop pulling if the cord will not bite. Add weights, or switch to a hem-rope cover that matches your pool family. Several UK reviews on drawstring ASINs report the same failure.
The straps have to go under the pool. Is that normal?
For Sarini’s design, yes. Reviewers say it is hard on a full pool. Fit when you can lift an edge, or choose a rope-tie branded sheet instead.
How do I store it?
Dry it, fold it loosely, and keep sharp grit out of the creases. Replace it if you see tears at the hem before next season.
