How to clean a parasol canopy without wrecking it

A polyester parasol canopy drying open on a patio after a lukewarm wash

Clean a parasol canopy with lukewarm water once it has dried open. Skip bleach and a machine wash. Brands disagree on whether you should remove the cloth.

Speckled seams are why you look up how to clean a parasol canopy. Soap is the second step. Drying the cloth open is the first, because a wet fold is how the marks start.

Products Compared read Lazy Susan, Ruma, Tectona, Nova, Schirmmacher, and the AKTIVE 61151 care line on 16 October 2026. We did not launder a canopy in a lab. A purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

In short

Brush off dry dirt, wash polyester with lukewarm water and mild soap on the frame, and leave it open until dry. Skip bleach and a machine wash. Ruma say not to remove the canopy. Some labels allow a hand wash off the frame. The AKTIVE line is a damp cloth, then a fold once it is dry.

Dry it open before you think about soap

Nova name a damp close as the mildew cause. After rain, leave the parasol open until the polyester is dry, then close it. A cover goes on dry cloth only. Schirmmacher say never to store a parasol wet and to avoid chlorine. If the day stays wet, use any dry hour, even a garage with the doors open if the span fits. Do not put polyester on a radiator. Lazy Susan warn that heat can shrink it.

The AKTIVE 61151, on the square parasol comparison, says wipe with a damp cloth and fold to store. Fold last: wipe, dry open, then fold. Dust is a damp-cloth job. Brush while the cloth is dry, as Tectona do, so loose dirt does not turn to mud. Keep the pole in its base. Do not lay a filled cantilever on the lawn.

A lukewarm wash that stays on the frame

Use lukewarm water, not hot, so the polyester does not shrink off the ribs. Mild soap and a soft brush, from the top of a panel downward, then rinse until you cannot feel soap. A little washing-up liquid counts as mild. A degreaser or a bathroom cleaner does not. If the label names a product, use that.

Ruma keep the canopy on the frame because taking it off risks shrinkage. Tectona refuse a machine wash. If your label says unzip and hand-wash, follow it. If it is silent, wash on the frame. The label beats this page when they conflict. Do not use a pressure washer. A jet drives water into seams and the pole. A bucket is the method the care guides describe. Two people help on a large cantilever. A 1.75 m square is a one-person wipe.

Mildew, and what not to use

Dry-brush set-in mildew outdoors first. Lazy Susan describe vinegar and detergent, then a rinse and an open dry. Ruma allow vinegar for mould that has set and forbid bleach. Test a hidden hem and stop if the colour shifts more than the stain. Bleach can strip the water-repellent finish. Schirmmacher name chlorine as something to avoid. Do not add bleach to the vinegar. If the label bans vinegar too, the label wins.

Bird lime and sap get the same mild wash, then a brush. If mildew remains after a vinegar wash and a full dry, or the seams have rotted, or the cloth has shrunk off the tips, stop. A new canopy has to match the ribs. Cleaning does not restore UV30 on the AKTIVE. That printed line is not a finish you can prove you have put back. Keep using sunscreen. What UV claims on shade actually mean is the longer limit.

Covers, awnings, and winter

Put a cover on dry cloth only. Prefer closed and dry over bagged and damp, and bring the parasol indoors for winter if you can. IKEA UK suggest a thorough outdoor clean about once a year. Tectona want a clean at the start and end of the season, with brushing between. Belveo's coastal rinse, about every 15 days, is one maker's salt schedule, not an inland rule. Match the dirt you can see.

An awning fails the same way if you roll it wet. The VOUNOT 2.5 × 1.2 m awning on the standing awning comparison is 180 gsm polyester with a manual crank, 2.5 m by 1.2 m, and poles listed at 210–320 cm. The captured page was about £64.99, with 4.3 from 965 reviews. It prints no wash method, wind class, or hydrostatic head. Use mild soap, rinse, and let the cloth dry before you wind it in. Do not force a binding crank. A vertical awning may only need a damp cloth for road dust.

Dry the screws you wet, or the pole rusts at the collar. Ruma prefer a silicone lubricant on a mechanism, masked from the fabric. Do not spray oil on the polyester. If rain returns before the canopy is dry, leave it open under a roof.

Common questions

How do I clean a polyester parasol?
Brush off dry dirt, then wash with lukewarm water and a mild soap while the canopy stays open on the frame. Lazy Susan warn that hot water can shrink polyester. Rinse until the soap is gone, and leave the canopy open until it is dry. The AKTIVE 61151 line is shorter: wipe with a damp cloth and fold only once it is dry. If your label is that short, do not move on to a soak. Where the label is stricter, the label wins.
Can I machine wash the canopy?
Not if you follow Tectona, whose FAQ rules out a machine wash, or Ruma, who say not to remove the canopy because of shrinkage. Some other brands allow a removed canopy to be washed by hand. If your care label is silent, keep the cloth on the frame and wash it there. A washing machine agitates seams and the stitching around the ribs in a way a soft brush does not. Shrunk polyester will not refit the frame.
How do I get mildew off?
Dry-brush first, outdoors. Lazy Susan describe a vinegar-and-detergent approach for mildew, then a rinse and a dry in the open. Ruma also allow vinegar for mould that has set, and they rule out bleach. Test a hidden corner. Vinegar can lighten a colour even when it is the method those guides name. If the black marks are in the stitching, you may improve them and not erase them. Prevention is closing the canopy only when it is dry. Nova name damp storage as the cause they see.
Can I use bleach?
No, if you are following Ruma and Tectona. Bleach can strip a coating and weaken the cloth. Schirmmacher say to avoid chlorine and never to store the parasol wet. A white canopy that looks cleaner for a week and then sheds its finish is a poor trade. Mild soap, and vinegar where those guides allow it, is as far as this page goes. If your label bans vinegar too, the label wins.
Must it dry open?
Yes, before you cover it or bag it for more than a short move. Nova, and the usual UK care notes, say to dry the canopy fully open. Closing it damp traps moisture against the polyester and the mildew returns. The AKTIVE line says fold to store after a wipe. Wipe, let it dry open, then fold. Do not read fold to store as fold it wet. A cover is for a dry canopy only.
How often should I clean it?
IKEA UK suggest a thorough clean about once a year for outdoor furniture, and Tectona say clean a parasol at the start and end of the season, with a dry brush during the summer. A canopy under trees may need the mild wash sooner. A coastal garden picks up salt. Belveo's coastal rinse, about every 15 days, is one maker's schedule, not a law. Match the dirt you can see, and do not scrub a clean cloth for the sake of a calendar.
Does the same method work on an awning?
The idea is the same: mild soap, no bleach, and a full dry before you roll the cloth away. Forcing a wet awning into the cassette is the mildew mistake at a larger scale. The VOUNOT row is 180 gsm polyester with a crank, and that listing does not print a wash method. Stay with mild soap and a dry unless a sewn-in label says more. If the crank binds, stop.
