How to fit an awning

Updated: 22.10.2026

The sheet will not seat, the bolts do not suit the wall, or you are holding a 2 m panel alone. This is how to fit an awning of the kind in the [awning comparison](/hub/sun-shades/awning), from the failures in those amazon.co.uk reviews and the sequence UK fitting notes describe. Fixed lid or crank cloth is already settled on [door canopy or retractable awning](/hub/sun-shades/awning/sub/awning-door-canopy-or-retractable). The editorial team did not install one on 20 October 2026. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Before you drill

Name the product. A VOUNOT door canopy is a fixed sheet with screws: 6 sets on the 120 cm and 200 cm listings, 4 on the 100 cm. The telescopic and vertical listings say no drilling. A masonry bit is the wrong tool for those. Measure again before you mark. The sheet has to clear the frame and miss the downpipe, the light and the soffit. Assemble on the ground, not in wind. Follow the sheet in the box. If you have not measured, use the awning buying guide before you mark the wall. A flat or a listed front is a reason to read awning planning permission before the first hole.

Putting a polycarbonate canopy together

Deal with the rubber on the ground. VOUNOT reviews describe seals that arrived kinked. Warm a creased seal indoors. If it is split, treat it as faulty rather than trimming it until the sheet has nothing to grip. Feeding the sheet into the bracket is the fiddly step. On the 200 cm VOUNOT and the three-piece VIVOHOME, the centre is the weak point. Shared reviews describe a joint that pops apart and panels that fall out. If the halves will not sit flush on the ground, they will not sit flush in the air. Two people, for anything you cannot hold and mark together, is the rule from the reviews.

The wall and the bolts

The bolts assume a wall. VOUNOT reviewers often rejected them as too long, or replaced them in timber or a cavity. Solid brick and a cavity need different plugs. This page will not give you a diameter. If you cannot name the leaf, do not make do with the expansion bolt because it was in the bag. Mark with the bracket held level. If the hole is already too big, stop. Recheck after the first windy week. A cracked panel is a return, not a repair on the drive. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives you 30 days to reject goods that are not of satisfactory quality. Photograph the damage before you drill.

No-drill shades

The telescopic VOUNOT stands between floor and ceiling. Bullets say no drilling, poles from 210 to 320 cm, and a minimum of 210 cm. UK reviews still want two people. Under 210 cm, the listing says it does not fit. VOUNOT’s UK page has also printed 210–300 cm, so the paper in the box wins. Wind the cloth in when the forecast turns. There is no wind class. The vertical claim is a pressure fit from 220 to 310 cm. One review, not from the UK, says the crank is too short on an upper balcony. Do not stand on the rail to reach it. A lease can forbid a pole even when the seller mentions rented homes.

When the fitting should stop

Stop when you cannot name the wall, when the only stance is over a public drop, or when the crank needs you on a rail. Stop if a 200 cm or 300 cm joint will not close on the ground, or if the goods arrived damaged. A second person fixes a heavy lift. A builder is the fix when the wall, the height or the permission is the thing you cannot name.

Common questions

Can I fit a door canopy on my own?
Some reviewers hold a short sheet up alone. Shared VOUNOT reviews talk about two people once the canopy is the two-panel size. The VIVOHOME seller recommends two people. If you cannot hold the panel and mark the holes together, wait.
What do I do if the rubber seal is kinked?
Ease the crease indoors before you are on a ladder. VOUNOT reviews say seals arrived warped. If the seal is split or will not enter the channel, treat it as faulty. Do not cut it so short that the sheet has nothing to grip.
Should I use the bolts in the box on a cavity wall?
Only if those bolts are meant for that wall. Reviewers often scrapped the supplied anchors. Solid brick and a cavity leaf need different plugs, and this page will not invent a size. If you cannot name the construction behind the render, stop. The packet is not a survey of your house.
What drill size should I use?
Use the size on the sheet in your box, then look at the hole. One review in this set said a stated 12 mm bit left too large a hole. If the hole is already too big, do not keep widening the same spot.
How do I fit the no-drill telescopic awning?
Build it where you have floor space, crank outwards, then stand it in a gap of at least 210 cm. The bullets say 210–320 cm and no drilling. UK reviews still want two people for the lift. Wind the cloth in when the wind picks up. Under 210 cm, this listing says it does not fit.
What if a panel arrives cracked?
Do not fit it. Photograph the crack and the packaging. You have 30 days to reject goods that are not of satisfactory quality under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. A cracked sheet, or a seal you cannot use, is a return. Drilling the wall first only makes that conversation harder.
