Awning buying guide

Updated: 22.10.2026

You have searched for an awning and found plastic lids, crank-out cloth and a van porch, all priced in pounds on amazon.co.uk. This awning buying guide is the fork before the [awning comparison](/hub/sun-shades/awning): which job you are buying, then the measurement that stops the width being a guess from the photo. Those ten listings run from a £29.49 door canopy to a £179.99 campervan awning. We did not fit them or run a wind test on 20 October 2026. Which awning you are actually buying

In this set a door canopy is a fixed polycarbonate sheet, 100, 120 or 200 cm wide and 80 cm deep, screwed to the wall. A telescopic awning is 180 gsm polyester on steel poles, titled 2.5 × 1.2 m or 3 × 1.2 m, with a hand crank and no drilling. The vertical awning is a 200 × 310 cm drop, also no-drill. The VIVOHOME kit is still a fixed sheet, 300 × 100 cm. The EVER ADVANCED product is a campervan awning for a stated vehicle height of 245–260 cm. Reviews say a drive-away kit is not in the box. A 4.4-star line may be printed on three widths. The fixed sheet against cloth you roll away is door canopy or retractable awning.

Measure the opening before the width

Measure the frame, not only the door leaf. Apex Canopies’ sizes guide talks about widths around 1000–1800 mm and a projection often in the 600–800 mm band, and it tells you to leave wall for brackets and drainpipes. Templetown Canopies says to go brick to brick, then out to the downpipe, window or gable. That is a method, not a promise that a listing here clears your pipe. A maker’s rule of thumb is about 100–200 mm past the frame on each side. The 100 × 80 cm VOUNOT at £29.49 can be tight on a wide UK frame. The 120 × 80 cm pair at £33.49 is the ordinary single-door width. Eighty centimetres covers a step in straight rain and does not shade a patio.

Fixing, fabric, and the price bands

Drilled canopies are the VOUNOT lids and the VIVOHOME. The 100 cm listing includes 4 screw sets. The 120 cm and 200 cm listings include 6. The sheet claim is 6 mm polycarbonate, except the VIVOHOME at 2 × 5 mm. Shared reviews often scrap the packet bolts. If you rent and must not drill, that branch is wrong. No-drill here means a pressure pole, not a promise about the lease. Telescopic listings want at least 210 cm from floor to soffit. The vertical starts at 220 cm. None prints a wind class. About £29.49 to £55.24 buys a fixed VOUNOT. About £54.92 to £69.99 buys the no-drill cloth. £179.99 is the van awning, with a 3000 mm claim the house canopies do not make. England’s limits are on awning planning permission.

What to ignore in the stars

The two 120 cm canopies both show 4.2 from 2,654. The grey 200 cm, the anthracite 200 cm and the black 100 cm all show 4.4 from 5,433. The two telescopic titles both show 4.3 from 965 and the same image. A higher number on the 100 cm sheet is not 5,433 reviews of that width alone. Use the stars for repeating complaints: bolts, a centre joint, a two-person lift, and winding a cloth in. They are not a laboratory order.

Which job to buy first

If the job is rain over a door you can drill, start with a fixed canopy and the width you taped, including brackets. If you must not drill and the gap is at least 210 cm, the telescopic titles are the cloth in this set. If the rail is 245–260 cm and you do not need drive-away, the van listing is the only porch here. A shared star count does not pick the width.

Common questions

Is a door canopy the same as a patio awning?
In this comparison they are different products under one amazon.co.uk word. A door canopy is a fixed polycarbonate lid screwed over a door. A telescopic awning is polyester on poles that you crank out and wind back. The campervan listing is a third product. Shade over a table several metres from the house is not what the door canopies do.
What width covers a normal UK front door?
Measure the frame, then the overhang the brackets need. A UK maker’s guide, not a standard, is about 100–200 mm past the frame each side. The 200 cm listings are for a wider opening, not a default upgrade for every front door.
Is 80 cm of projection enough to keep the step dry?
It can be, when rain falls close to the wall, which is how the 80 cm VOUNOT canopies are sold. It is a weak lid in wind-driven rain. A contractor rule of thumb prefers something nearer 900–1200 mm, and that figure is not a test of these sheets. The deepest fixed sheet here is the VIVOHOME at 100 cm.
How do I measure around a drainpipe?
Run the tape brick to brick, then stop at the downpipe, window or gable, and check up for lights, flues and the soffit. That is Templetown’s sequence. If the pipe sits inside the width you wanted, the listing has no cut-out. Trimming a sheet afterwards is your alteration, not an orderable size.
Can a no-drill telescopic awning fit a low balcony?
Not from this folder. Both telescopic titles state a minimum of 210 cm, with poles at 210–320 cm on amazon.co.uk. The vertical starts at 220 cm. A lower minimum on another brand’s page does not change these ASINs. Under 210 cm, look outside this comparison.
Why do two VOUNOT listings share one star count?
The review block is copied across sizes or colours. Do not add the counts, and do not treat the highest shared number as a test of the narrowest sheet. The 120 cm pair shares one line. The telescopic titles also share one image.
