Door canopy or retractable awning

Updated: 22.10.2026

You are picturing a plastic lid over the door and a cloth you can roll away when the sun leaves the glass. They are not two names for one product, even though amazon.co.uk calls both an awning. This door canopy or retractable awning page uses the [awning comparison](/hub/sun-shades/awning). A fixed sheet is a short rain lid you leave up. A telescopic or vertical model is shade you remove when the wind rises. We compared these listings on 20 October 2026 and did not run a rain test. They are not two names for one product

Shops disagree on the words. Amazon titles a polycarbonate door lid as an outdoor awning. In this set the hardware is the split that matters. A door canopy is fixed polycarbonate, 100, 120 or 200 cm wide and 80 cm deep, with screws and no crank. The VIVOHOME is 300 × 100 cm, still fixed. A retractable awning here is a hand-crank cloth: the telescopic titles at £64.99 and £69.99, and the vertical at £54.92. The campervan listing is neither. A cassette is not in this ten. Measuring is on the awning buying guide.

Rain at the door

Choose the fixed canopy when the job is rain at the threshold and you can drill. VOUNOT projection is 80 cm. VIVOHOME is 100 cm. Reviews praise them for keeping the step drier, not for darkening a patio. The shelter line has no millimetre figure, and no page states a wind class. The sides are open, so sun and water come past the ends. Width is not projection: the 200 cm model is still only 80 cm deep. The 100 cm canopy is £29.49, the 120 cm pair is £33.49, grey 200 cm is £42.49, and anthracite is £55.24 for the same size claim. The VIVOHOME is £105.39 because it is 3 m wide, not because it retracts.

Sun on a window or balcony

Choose the telescopic or vertical awning when the problem is heat on the glass, or shade you want gone by evening. UK reviews of the telescopic pair say the room is cooler with the cloth out, and they wind it in when the wind picks up. These models have no wind class, and the cloth has no hydrostatic head. The telescopic titles project 1.2 m, more shade over a window than 80 cm of polycarbonate, and still not a patio of several metres. The vertical is a privacy screen on a pole of 220–310 cm. A door you can drill points to the canopy. Window heat, and a lease that allows a pole, points to the crank. Under 210 cm, this folder has no telescopic pick.

Wind, winter, and what this set leaves out

No listing prints a wind class. On the fixed canopy you are trusting a screwed sheet. On the cloth you retract it yourself. There is no sensor here. If you are out all day in a poor forecast, the telescopic awning is a worse bet than a lid you never remember. A patio of several metres is the cassette job at another price. A porch outside a door is not the same consent question as an attached fabric awning. That line is on awning planning permission.

One job, then the hardware

Rain on the step, and a wall you may drill, is the fixed canopy. Heat on the glass, or shade you want gone by evening, is the crank, and only where the pole range fits. A cassette with arms and a hood is a different price and is not in this ten. The holes, once you have chosen, are on how to fit an awning.

Common questions

Will an 80 cm canopy keep me dry at the door?
It is sold for that, and VOUNOT reviewers say it keeps rain off the step once fitted. Eighty centimetres is short in driven rain. A contractor rule of thumb prefers something nearer 900–1200 mm, and that figure is not a test of these listings. The sides are open.
Will it stop the afternoon sun?
A fixed door canopy is a weak sun block from the side. The ends are open. People who describe a cooler room in this comparison are talking about telescopic cloth over the glass, and they wind it in when the weather turns.
When is a telescopic awning the better buy?
When you want about 1.2 m of shade you can remove, you have at least 210 cm of height, and a pressure pole is acceptable. The titles are £64.99 and £69.99. It is the worse buy if you wanted a lid you never think about. This cloth has no stated wind class.
Can I leave a fabric awning out in the rain?
Treat light rain as the ceiling, and only while you can retract it. The telescopic pages say waterproof with no millimetre figure. The vertical page says light rain. These crank models have no wind class. UK reviewers wind the telescopic cloth in when the forecast turns. Overnight in a storm is not what those reviews describe.
Is a vertical roller a door canopy?
No. The vertical VOUNOT is a drop up to 310 cm, with a privacy claim and a light-rain line. It needs at least 220 cm. One review says the crank is too short on an upper balcony. Use polycarbonate if the job is the threshold.
Do I need a cassette instead?
You do if the shade must cover a real patio and cope with more than a light breeze without you standing there to wind it. Cassette listings sat from about £330 on an earlier amazon.co.uk look and are not these ASINs.
