Clamp awning vs wall-mounted awning

Updated: 22.10.2026

You can drill the wall, or the tenancy says you must not, and both are sold as a 3 m awning. They are different fixings. A clamp pushes between floor and a solid ceiling. A wall-mounted awning bolts into masonry and uses folding arms. This page says when each one fits. The three no-drill listings stay on the [3 m no-drill awning comparison](/hub/sun-shades/3m-no-drill-awning). Renters start with the [no-drill balcony awning](/hub/sun-shades/3m-no-drill-awning/sub/3m-no-drill-awning-balcony) letter first. Compared on 19 October 2026, not load-tested. Two different fixings

A clamp here is two posts, a roller, a crank, and polyester cloth. VOUNOT states steel, 180 gsm, poles from 210 to 320 cm, and 3 x 1.2 m on title and table. The EVRE rows state aluminium and size cells that clash with the titles. None has a motor, a cassette, or a sensor. A folding-arm awning is fixed to the house. The British Blind and Shutter Association calls it sun shading, not shelter in bad weather. A Green Bay 4 x 3 m listing had to be fixed to a concrete wall, and reviews describe 14 mm holes. At £299.99 it illustrates the bolted type. It is not a fourth row. markilux still uses screws in the columns of its 900 clamp. A £67 kit is not that structure.

Projection, price, and who may drill

On 19 October 2026 the kept prices were £66.99, £74.96 for the grey 3 x 1.5 m title, and £89.99 for the beige 3 x 1.2 m title. Projection on an honest line is 1.2 m or 1.5 m. One shared review says the cloth sat about 10 cm inside the frame. That covers a door, not a 3 m deep patio. Drill only when you own a sound wall and the lease agrees. Not as a tenant without written consent, and not into a mullion. A household can square a complete clamp with a second person and a spirit level. Masonry, an insulated façade, or a listed front is a fitter's job.

Wind class, or the lack of one

None of the three states an EN 13561 class. Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2019/1188 stops folding-arm tables at class 2, at least 70 N/m². Copying that class onto a clamp would invent a test. The BBSA says retract a wall-fixed arm before its stated class, and that a sensor is not a failsafe. These kits publish no class. VOUNOT reviews describe winding the cloth in and taking it down at night. The posts load the floor and ceiling. The brackets load the wall.

Which one to choose

Choose the clamp when floor and ceiling are solid, inside the pole range, you must not drill, and 1.2 m or a checked 1.5 m is enough. The VOUNOT is the size line that agrees, with 964 reviews. The grey EVRE is the 1.5 m title only after the 2.3 m cell. Who should skip a row is on the best 3 m no-drill awning page. Choose a wall-mounted awning for more than 1.5 m, a cassette, or a named class, on a wall you may drill. £299.99 is one removed listing, not a quote. A renter needs written consent for the holes. No ceiling and no drilling means neither product.

Common questions

Is a clamp awning weaker in the wind?
These listings state no wind class, so there is no figure to set against a class 2 folding arm. Treat the clamp as shade you retract. Ask for a printed class before you rely on a bolted awning in a gust.
When is drilling the better choice?
When you need more than 1.5 m of projection, a cassette, or an EN 13561 class, and you own a sound wall you may fix to. It is the wrong choice on a rented façade you must leave unmarked.
Can a renter use the wall-mounted type?
Only with written consent that covers the holes. Shelter England's advice is to agree improvements first. A clamp does not need a masonry fixing, but the ceiling still has to be yours to load.
Does a cassette change the comparison?
A cassette covers the cloth when it is in. None of the three clamp listings claims one. If a cassette and a stated class matter, you have moved to a wall-fixed awning and a fitter.
Why was a 4 x 3 m awning left out of the table?
The Green Bay listing had to be fixed to a concrete wall, and reviews describe drilling. It is the bolted type at £299.99, which is why it is a contrast here and not a fourth row.
Will either type cover a 3 m deep patio?
The clamp titles stop at 1.2 m or 1.5 m of projection. A 3 m deep patio needs a longer arm, and a wall that can take it. A 3 m width is not a 3 m projection.
Who should fit the bolted one?
A fitter, once the wall is known. Masonry, an insulated façade, a listed building, or damaged waterproofing is outside a Saturday clamp assembly. Ask for the wind class at your width.
