How to use a portable steam sauna

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have the box open on a spare-room floor and the frame is up. You need to know where the water goes, and when you get out. This is how to use a portable steam sauna once you already own one, from the Products Compared editorial team and the listings in our [sauna house comparison](/hub/steam-baths/sauna-house). We did not run a laboratory session. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. Match the unit in front of you, then fill only a generator the listing actually has.

Steam tent or the dry room

A steam tent heats a pot and pushes vapour through a hose. The CONLONS far-infrared room, B0DN68F85P, does not show a water tank in its specification, and one UK review says it uses no water. If that is what you unboxed, leave the kettle in the kitchen. Water will not turn that dry-heat room into a steam bath. How the two heat types differ before you buy is on steam sauna tent vs infrared. Only those steam generators take a fill. Runitude and the ThermoLab pop-up list 2.6 litres. MQFORU, BioGlow, the ThermoLab 6 ft frame and CHILLZ list 3 litres. SereneLife and WILLOWYBE do not state a tank, so do not borrow a neighbour’s volume. WILLOWYBE is an outdoor stove shell, and this page does not cover lighting one.

Water, oils and the first minutes

Fill the tank the listing describes, with water only. Oil in the boiler is a stated mistake, so do not add fragrance or essential oil to the heating chamber. CHILLZ (B0GC6YLNC6) does not say whether an oil cup is separate from the tank, so treat it as water-only until the manual in your box says otherwise. Those times are listing claims, not a dose. MQFORU says about 15 minutes to fill with steam if you add hot water, and a first session of 15 to 30 minutes. That clock is one seller’s. ThermoLab’s two to four sessions a week is a claim only. Leave when you feel uncomfortable, even if the timer is still running.

Keep the hose off your skin

Steam from a short hose will scald skin if the outlet sits against you. Three UK review notes in this folder describe that, on three different products. On SereneLife B0BT256Z8R, the pipe near the feet burned a foot and a hand. On Runitude B0C2CJTG6M, a reviewer was burned when the steamer sat near the door. On the ThermoLab 6 ft tent B0FSD9177W, the internal steamer can hit a leg or a back. Point the outlet into open air inside the tent, and keep bare skin off the pipe. A US recall on 28 May 2026 of Giantex and Costway tents blamed a diffuser too close to the body. Those ASINs are not in this folder. Leave the cloth open rather than folding it damp.

Drying and when to stop

Empty the tank, then dry the tent and mats with the fabric spread out. One Runitude review said an unheated garage was too cold and that the mats and tent took about 24 hours to dry. That is one room, not a rule for every tent here. Get out if you feel faint, dizzy, sick or unusually short of breath. Collingwood Surgery, an NHS practice, says pregnant people may avoid saunas and steam rooms because of overheating, dehydration and fainting, especially in the first 12 weeks. If you are pregnant, or you have a heart condition, ask your clinician before a session. Stop the generator and step out. A burn that has broken the skin needs NHS urgent care, not another round.

Common questions

Where does the water go, and what must you not add?
Water goes only into a steam generator the listing includes. Runitude and the ThermoLab pop-up state 2.6 litres. MQFORU, BioGlow, the ThermoLab 6 ft and CHILLZ state 3 litres. Do not add essential oil or fragrance to the boiler. The CONLONS room does not list a tank, so it does not get a fill. The outdoor WILLOWYBE shell is not a plug-in steam pot, so this fill routine does not apply to it either.
Where do reviews say the steam pipe burns people?
Three UK review notes in this folder describe burns. On SereneLife B0BT256Z8R, the pipe near the feet burned a foot and a hand. On Runitude B0C2CJTG6M, the steamer near the door burned one reviewer. On ThermoLab 6 ft B0FSD9177W, the internal steamer can strike a leg or a back. Keep the outlet off your skin, including your calves. A 28 May 2026 recall of other brands describes the same hazard and does not show that these three ASINs were recalled.
How do you use the CONLONS room if it has no tank?
The CONLONS specification, B0DN68F85P, does not list a water tank, and one review says the room uses no water. You sit in the fabric room and use the heat settings the listing describes. You do not fill a pot that is not there.
How do you dry the tent before you fold it?
Empty the generator, wipe standing water, and leave the tent and mats open until they are dry to the touch. One Runitude reviewer needed about 24 hours in an unheated garage that was too cold for a quicker dry. Treat that as a warning about a cold room, not as a timer for a heated flat. If the floor is carpet, move the wet mats before you leave them overnight.
Who should skip a session, and when do you get out?
Collingwood Surgery’s NHS page says pregnant people may avoid saunas and steam rooms because of overheating, dehydration and fainting, especially in the first 12 weeks. These listings are not medical devices, so ask a clinician if you are pregnant or unsure because of a health condition. In the session, get out when you feel faint, dizzy, sick or too hot, switch the generator off, and step clear of the hose.
