Gasless MIG wire: what to check before you buy

Updated: October 2026

You already own a gasless MIG, or a dual-process machine you plan to run without a bottle, and the next spool decides whether the afternoon works. Gasless MIG wire in this UK set is self-shielded flux-cored wire, almost all of it sold as E71T-GS for mild steel. Titles often add a kilogram, a stainless phrase, or a multi-pass promise the class does not support. Check the class, then whether 0.8 mm or 1.0 mm matches the tip, then whether the stated mass fits the door. The [flux-cored wire comparison](/hub/soldering-and-welding/flux-cored-wire) holds the ten listings and the shelf prices. Peter F. checked them on 16 October 2026. We did not run a lab weld. What gasless wire is for

Gasless MIG wire makes its shield from the flux in the tube. You do not connect a cylinder, and you chip off a slag skin. Solid MIG wire needs argon/CO2 or CO2 and electrode positive. Gas-shielded flux-cored wire still needs a bottle. Lincoln’s usability note treats GS as general, single pass: one pass on carbon steel, not a stack of runs on a loaded bracket. Published guides keep this class on thin plate, about 0.8 mm to 4.8 mm, or about 5 mm on Lincoln Steelcore 71T-GS. A multi-pass or structural phrase on the title does not change that. E71T-11, such as Lincoln NR-211-MP, is not one of these ten spools. Structural self-shielded wire looks like ESAB UK Coreshield 8, E71T-8, with UKCA to EN 13479. HSE bulletin STSU1 says mild-steel welding fume can cause lung cancer. If the real choice is a bottle, read flux core vs gas MIG before you add another reel.

Diameter and the tip you already own

Match the wire to the contact tip and the drive roll, then worry about the brand. In this set, 0.8 mm is the common UK hobby size. The only 1.0 mm options are the FEIFANKE reel at about £17.99 and the haxiaoer three-pack at about £24.99. There is no 0.6 mm spool. HITBOX reviews, including an exhaust repair, asked for 0.6 mm because 0.8 mm put too much heat into thin sheet. A 1.0 mm wire in a 0.8 mm tip binds, and a 0.8 mm wire in a 1.0 mm tip wanders. Flux-cored wire wants a knurled roll and light tension so the tube is not crushed. A smooth V-roll is a common reason a new spool birdnests, which is setup rather than proof the brand is useless. Leads and rollers are on how to use flux-cored wire. The SSIMDER line of 80–100 A for 1.5 mm steel is that listing’s suggestion, not a setting for every machine. If the welder cannot run torch negative, none of these spools will behave.

Spool mass and whether it fits

Stated mass is the next filter, and several listings disagree with themselves. Prices are the shelf figures in the amazon.co.uk files. A nominal 1 kg spool runs from about £12.34 to about £18.99. YESWELDER’s smaller listing is titled 0.9 kg at about £13.99 while the item weight says 1 kg. SSIMDER’s title says 1 kg, the item weight is 980 g, and one UK review weighed 986 g including the reel. haxiaoer’s 0.8 mm item weight is 970 g. FEIFANKE’s 1.0 mm item weight is 900 g against a 1 kg title. Weigh the reel if metres matter. The YESWELDER titled 4.5 kg is about £35.99, but the package line is 31.6 × 26.5 × 13 cm and 5.14 kg, and the file does not say it fits a mini door. A trade price for context, not one of these ASINs, is about £49.50 excluding VAT for 4.55 kg of 0.8 mm. Buy the smallest reel you will use, after a short spool has run without jams.

What the listing must not decide for you

Stainless next to E71T-GS is a contradiction: haxiaoer and both FEIFANKE listings put stainless in the title and mild steel in the bullets. Multi-pass and structural on a GS wire are seller copy. Better corrosion resistance on the haxiaoer three-pack has no corrosion test in the file. Both YESWELDER files show 4.6 from 750 and the same review text. Both FEIFANKE files show 4.6 from 1,818 and the same text. Both haxiaoer files show 4.7 from 649, and the first review is about nozzles. Do not add those pairs. HITBOX, 4.6 from 2,580, is the separate file. A vacuum pouch only helps if the wire is still bright when you open it. Thin vehicle sheet is a separate limit, on the car body page.

Common questions

Does gasless MIG wire need a bottle?
No. Self-shielded flux-cored wire makes the shield from the core, which is why these listings say gasless or no external gas. The Reboot file is the exception that does not state it. You still need the right polarity, usually torch negative, a knurled roll, and fume control. Leaving a gas bottle connected does not turn an E71T-GS spool into a dual-shield wire.
What does E71T-GS allow that E71T-11 does not?
GS means a general single-pass wire for carbon steel, typically limited to thin plate around 5 mm. E71T-11, such as Lincoln NR-211-MP, is the multi-pass self-shielded class sold through UK trade shops, and it is not in this amazon.co.uk set. A bullet that says multi-pass on a GS title does not promote the spool into the -11 class. Structural work wants a wire that prints the classification the procedure asks for, such as an E71T-8 with a UKCA mark to EN 13479.
Is 0.8 mm the right size for a small UK MIG?
It is the size most of these spools, and most hobby tips in this comparison, are built around. Use it when the contact tip and the knurled groove are 0.8 mm. Switch to the FEIFANKE 1.0 mm reel or the haxiaoer three-pack only if the tip is already 1.0 mm. If your sheet is thin enough that you wanted 0.6 mm, none of these reels is that wire.
Should you buy 0.45 kg, 1 kg, or 4.5 kg?
Buy 0.45 kg when the door only accepts a mini reel, and accept the higher price per kilogram of the Reboot spool at about £14.15. Buy a nominal 1 kg spool for a normal hobby MIG once the gram lines have been checked. Buy the titled 4.5 kg YESWELDER at about £35.99 only after you have measured the door against a package of about 31.6 × 26.5 × 13 cm and you have already liked the same diameter on a smaller reel.
Why do some titles say stainless?
The title is reaching for a search phrase. The bullets on the haxiaoer and FEIFANKE listings say mild steel and class E71T-GS. That class is a carbon-steel, single-pass wire. It will not give you a stainless weld, and it should not be used to patch stainless brackets. Read the classification line, not the first adjective in the title.
Can you trust 1 kg when the item weight is 900–980 g?
Not as a count of wire metres. SSIMDER’s item weight is 980 g and one review weighed 986 g including the reel. haxiaoer’s 0.8 mm item weight is 970 g. FEIFANKE’s 1.0 mm item weight is 900 g against a 1 kg title. HITBOX is the listing where a buyer weighed over 1 kg and the stated mass agrees. If a drawing needs a set length of weld, weigh the reel after delivery.
