How to choose screw-in felt pads for a wooden foot

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have a wooden chair that scrapes the kitchen floor, and a pack of screw in felt pads is one click away. Before the basket, measure the foot, check the fixing against what buyers received, and name the floor. Price comes after those three. The [screw-in felt pads comparison](/hub/screws-and-accessories/screw-in-felt-pads) holds the amazon.co.uk cards. Peter F., DIY & tools editor, updated this on 22 October 2026. There was no laboratory test. A qualifying amazon.co.uk purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Measure the foot before you read the pack count

The pad has to sit inside the flat of the foot, so the felt meets the floor and the rim of the leg stays off it. Measure that flat in millimetres. This set states 20 mm, 22 mm, 25 mm and 28 mm, plus one mixed pack. A 28 mm pad on a flat of about 24 mm hangs past the wood. A 20 mm pad on that foot leaves bare timber that still marks laminate. Keay sells screw-on glides at 20, 24, 28 and 40 mm. Glarks states 20, 24, 28 and 38 mm, and its dimension field does not match the bullets, so a mixed box stays a guess until the ruler has been out.

Check the fixing is a screw

An attribute that says screw-in can sit on a pin you hammer. Read the title, the bullets, then the reviews. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 11, the goods have to match the description. Shared Flintronic reviews describe nails, and three listings share one review block. ShiSheng’s bullets say to use a hammer. QWYEIQ is an M6 pad for a foot that already has a thread. A hollow tube will not hold a wood screw. If you cannot drill, read screw-in felt pads versus stick-on.

Match the floor, not the word any

Any floor on a bullet is a slogan. Quick-Step says grit in felt still scratches laminate. Amtico warns that rubber-backed mats can stain luxury vinyl. Karndean says not to drag chairs. Carpet is a different job, because felt can snag in a pile. There is no British Standard for felt thickness in these packs. If the chair moves at every meal, felt pads for dining chair legs is the closer read.

Read the star line last

Prices here run from £4.89 to £15.99. A lower figure is a weak reason to buy if the bag contains nails. SIMALA’s bullets list self-adhesive, screw-in and nail-in together, so that large star line is not one fixing. Sort by whether UK reviews describe a screw, then by how many you can read, then by price. That shortlist is best screw-in felt pads. Keay’s shop page calls the felt perishable.

Common questions

What diameter should you buy if you have not measured the foot?
Leave the pack on the shelf until you have a measurement. The diameters in this set, 20 mm, 22 mm, 25 mm and 28 mm, are pad sizes printed on cards. Turn the chair over and measure the flat of the foot. The pad needs to sit inside that flat. A wider pad overhangs and catches. A much narrower pad leaves bare timber that still marks laminate.
Is 20 mm, 22 mm, 25 mm or 28 mm the right pad for a dining chair?
Use whichever of those is smaller than the foot you measured, and only if the fixing is a wood screw you can drive. This set has no single dining-chair size. A 20 mm pad suits a narrow foot. A 28 mm pad is the wrong disc when it hangs past the leg. The Glarks card states several diameters while its dimension field disagrees, so treat that mix as unsorted until you measure.
How do you tell a wood screw from a nail when the attribute says screw-in?
Read the bullets and the reviews, then the attribute. A wood screw has a thread and a drive recess. A nail in this set shows up as a pin the reviews say you hammer. Flintronic’s shared reviews describe nails. ShiSheng’s bullets mention a hammer. If UK buyers say the metal is a pin, treat the pack as a nail-on glide and return to the comparison. Section 11 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 is the reason the description has to match what is in the bag.
Can you use these packs on laminate, tile and luxury vinyl?
On those hard floors, felt is what Quick-Step, Amtico and Karndean ask for under furniture feet. Grit in the felt still scratches laminate, and Karndean still tells you not to drag the chair. Amtico warns that rubber-backed mats can stain luxury vinyl, so skip a rubber cap on LVT. A felt face is not a promise of silence over tile grout.
What if the leg is hollow metal or already has an M6 thread?
A wood screw needs solid wood. In a hollow metal tube it spins or punches through, and a stick-on pad is the fixing you can use if you watch it and replace it. An M6 thread is the QWYEIQ case in this set: the pad screws into a thread that is already there. Drilling a pilot and driving a wood screw into that foot is a different job. A 20 mm wood-screw pack does not become the right product because the diameter looks familiar.
When is a mixed-size pack useful, and when is it a guess?
It earns its place when you have measured several different feet and the discs in the pack match those measurements. It is a guess when you buy it because the chair looks about 24 mm, or because the card lists 20, 24, 28 and 38 mm while another field on the same listing disagrees, which is the Glarks problem. One diameter, bought after the ruler, is the cleaner order. A lower price per pad does not repair a wrong width or a bag of nails.
