Cordless drill for flat-pack furniture

Updated: October 2026

Too much torque turns a flat-pack cam into a round coin in the first ten minutes, usually with the drill left on the drill symbol. A cordless drill for flat pack furniture, in this amazon.co.uk set, is either a 3.6 V or 4 V driver or a 12 V pistol on a low clutch with a Pozidriv bit. This page is that one job, from the 16 October 2026 capture. Peter F. did not lab-test the tools. A driver is enough for most cams

Most cams do not need a 12 V pistol. ManoMano's UK notes put ordinary tightening on a 3.6 V to 4 V tool at about 5 Nm. WORX lists furniture steps of 2.5, 3.5 and 5 Nm on the WX240, which is not in our set. That is a brand's rule of thumb, not a British Standard. The MQFORU at £13.99 has 4.2 from 2,474 reviews and about 3 to 3.5 Nm, with short battery life in reviews. The DongCheng at £16.98 has 5 Nm in three steps and 2000 mAh. Use a 12 V pistol, the FADAKWALT, FAHEFANA or DEKOPRO, only when you also need a pilot hole, and keep the clutch low. Types are split on the mini cordless drill buying guide.

Start lower than you think

Set the lowest clutch and drive one scrap screw. If it clicks before the head is flush, go up one number. If the head sinks, you are too high. Drill mode is for the pilot hole only. The DongCheng's lowest step still snapped a terminal screw in a UK review. If a cam spins, stop, check the dowel, and turn the cam by hand. Charge the MQFORU first, using the how to use a mini cordless drill page.

Use a Pozidriv bit

UK cabinet screws, including ForgeFix and TIMCO, are Pozidriv. The head has extra lines. A Phillips bit is designed to cam out. The DEKOPRO kit names PZ1 and PZ2. PZ2 fits most carcass screws. The FADAKWALT and FAHEFANA bits have no PZ label you can rely on. If the bit jumps, change to PZ2 before you drop the clutch.

Stop at the furniture

This page ends at the carcass. It does not drill brick or resin. If the fixing may hide pipes or cables, stop and get a competent person. A pen will not drive a cam. The best mini cordless drill page names the FADAKWALT when you also want small household holes. A round screw head will not recut itself.

Common questions

Do I need a drill or will a 3.6 V screwdriver do?
A 3.6 V or 4 V screwdriver will do for most cams, hinges and confirmat screws. The MQFORU and the DongCheng are that type in this set, around 3 to 5 Nm. Choose a 12 V pistol if the instructions also call for a pilot hole, or if you will bore small holes in timber the same day. The pistol must stay on a low clutch for the screws. Drill mode is how boards split.
What torque is enough for a cam and a chipboard screw?
Use a setting inside roughly 2.5 to 5 Nm as a rule of thumb taken from WORX's published furniture steps, not as a lab limit. The MQFORU lists about 3 to 3.5 Nm. The DongCheng lists 5 Nm, and its lowest step still snapped a terminal screw in a UK review. Start lower than you think, on a scrap, and stop when the clutch clicks as the head seats. More torque enlarges a spinning cam hole.
Should I use Pozidriv or Phillips?
Use Pozidriv, usually PZ2 for carcass screws and PZ1 for smaller fittings. Pozidriv heads have extra lines, and UK packs such as ForgeFix and TIMCO sell furniture screws as PZ. A Phillips bit is meant to cam out, so it slips and rounds the head. The DEKOPRO kit in this set names PZ1 and PZ2 bits. If your bit does not match the lines in the screw, change the bit before you change the clutch.
Should the collar be on drill mode?
No, not for the screws. Drill mode bypasses the clutch and keeps turning after the screw is tight. Use a numbered clutch setting for every cam, hinge and confirmat. Use the drill symbol only while you bore a pilot hole, then switch back before you drive the screw. A 12 V pistol left on the drill symbol is the usual way a new wardrobe loses a cam.
Can the FADAKWALT or FAHEFANA assemble a wardrobe?
Yes, if you treat them as powerful screwdrivers and set the clutch low. Both appear in furniture reviews. The FADAKWALT is £24.99 with 4.4 stars from 1,204 reviews. The FAHEFANA is £20.99 with 4.4 from 372 and a stated 2.0 Ah battery. Their chucks also let you drill a pilot hole, which a hex driver may not. The risk is over-tightening, not a lack of power. One FAHEFANA review found empty LED holes, so do not rely on the light.
What if the cam spins?
Stop the tool. More speed will round the cam and ruin the chipboard. Check the connecting bolt is fully inserted, then turn the cam by hand until it catches. If the hole is already oval, the panel may need a repair fitting rather than another attempt with the drill. A stripped head is often a Phillips bit in a Pozidriv screw, so change the bit before you try again.
