Flat dowel vs biscuit: which one joins the board edge

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are about to join two boards, and amazon.co.uk results for flat dowel vs biscuit have offered you pine slats. A flat strip and a compressed beech wafer are both sold as a dowel, and they do not do the same job. A concealed edge needs a biscuit that matches your jointer. A model spar, a trim or a decorative slat uses a strip from the [flat dowel comparison](/hub/screws-and-accessories/flat-dowel). Do not swap them. The four packs here are strips only. Peter F., the DIY & tools editor, compared published sizes and those listings, not a lab joint. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What each one is

A jointing biscuit is an oval wafer of compressed beech, about 4 mm thick. You slot each board edge, glue the wafer, and close the joint so the faces stay aligned while the glue line holds. A strip here is an unfinished slat: pine at about 6 × 25 mm, 3 × 25 mm or 6 × 12.5 mm, or SENENQU at 2 × 9 mm. None of those ASINs prints size 0, 10, 20 or H9. A 2 mm stick is half a standard biscuit. A 6 mm slat is thicker than the slot. Furnica’s round dowels, at 6, 8 and 10 mm, sit in drilled holes. They are a third fastener.

When a biscuit is the better buy

Choose a biscuit when you are aligning a panel edge, a cabinet carcase or a glue-up that must not creep. Furnica describes a slide of about 2–3 mm so you can still tweak the joint. That figure is Furnica’s, not a measurement of the Coowayze packs. The same guide treats PVA as the glue that swells a compressed biscuit. That claim belongs to the wafer, not to a pine slat. Woodworkers Institute uses the wafer to stop creep while the glue line holds. Neither a craft strip nor a standard biscuit has a stated load on the pages used here. A jointer, or DIY Doctor’s clamp-cut-glue router method, cuts a slot. A Tolux size 20 tin is a biscuit tin, not one of these strips.

When a strip is the better buy

Choose a strip when the piece is meant to be seen, or when the job is too small for a jointer. A pine slat can be short trim or a dollhouse beam, after you confirm the length. SENENQU’s bullets name models, kites and mini houses. JEN DAVIES used those sticks for a slatted cupboard front. That is face work, not an edge slot. You cannot push a rectangular slat into a 4 mm slot and call it a size 20. The how to use flat wood strips page is the cutting method once you have a strip. This page does not rank the four packs. The best flat wood strips page is the size-line criterion, and the flat dowel buying guide is the family split.

The recommendation, with the condition

For a concealed edge, buy a biscuit that matches your jointer. Lamello prints size 20 as 56 × 23 × 4 mm. Trend’s UK mixed box prints size 20 as 60 × 23 × 4 mm. Size 20 is not one length. H9, at 38 × 12 × 3 mm, is not the wafer for a standard 4 mm cutter. These four products are absent from that table. For a model, a trim or a slatted front, use a strip and measure it. One pine title says 150 mm while its dimensions say 30.5 cm. If the next cut is a slot, leave the craft packs. A stair or a bed is a joiner’s job.

Common questions

When do you choose a biscuit, and when a strip?
Choose a biscuit for a concealed edge that a jointer or a router will slot, so the wafer can align the boards while the glue sets. Choose a strip for a model, a kite, a trim or a slat you fix to a face. The four amazon.co.uk packs here are strips. They do not print size 0, 10, 20 or H9. The condition is the cut in front of you, not the word dowel in the title.
Can a 2 mm bamboo strip go in a biscuit slot?
No. A standard size 0, 10 or 20 biscuit is about 4 mm thick. SENENQU is 2 mm by 9 mm by 400 mm, and it is a rectangular stick, not an oval wafer. It will not fill the slot, it will not swell like compressed beech, and the bullets sell it for models and lanterns. A 6 mm pine slat is too thick for the same slot and the wrong shape.
Do biscuits replace glue?
No. Furnica and the Woodworkers Institute both keep the glue line as the joint. The wafer aligns the boards and, on Furnica’s account, can slide about 2–3 mm while you close it. Woodworkers Institute uses biscuits to stop creep during a glue-up. That is not a claim that a biscuit is always stronger than glue alone, and it is not a claim that a pine slat can stand in for the wafer.
How is a round fluted dowel different again?
A round fluted dowel, in the sizes Furnica lists, is a pin of about 6, 8 or 10 mm that you glue into a drilled hole. A biscuit sits in a slot from a jointer. A flat craft strip is a slat you cut to length. The three are different fasteners. This comparison kept round pins and square rods out of the strip ranking.
What should you buy from this comparison if you needed a joint?
Nothing in the four-pack set. Buy a biscuit elsewhere, in the size your jointer and your board require, and keep Lamello’s 56 mm size 20 distinct from Trend’s 60 mm size 20. Come back to these strips only if the job changes to a slat. The main comparison ranks strips. It is not a biscuit catalogue.
