Flat dowel buying guide: check sizes before you buy

Updated: 22 October 2026

You typed flat dowel because a board edge, a shed trim or a small model needs a thin wooden piece, and amazon.co.uk puts two products under that name. A jointing biscuit is a compressed beech wafer, about 4 mm thick, made for a slot. The four packs on the [flat dowel comparison](/hub/screws-and-accessories/flat-dowel) are unfinished strips: three Coowayze pine listings and one SENENQU bamboo pack. This flat dowel buying guide decides which family you need, then which section to read on the listing. Peter F., the DIY & tools editor, used the captured pages from 20 October 2026, not a workshop test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Two products under one name

A biscuit and a strip can both be called a dowel, which is why the search is messy. B&Q’s category text treats wooden dowels as commonly cylindrical, so a high-street search can still leave you thinking every dowel is a round rod. These strips are rectangular even where a Coowayze shape field says Square. A concealed oval slot needs a jointer or a router with a 4 mm cutter, and wafers that match it. None of the four listings prints size 0, 10, 20 or H9. A model, a gap or a short pine repair is the strip job. The flat dowel versus biscuit page holds the joint decision.

Why size 20 is not one length

Lamello prints size 20 as 56 × 23 × 4 mm, size 10 as 53 × 19 × 4 mm, size 0 as 47 × 15 × 4 mm, and H9 as 38 × 12 × 3 mm, with a 4 mm cutter and beech. Trend’s UK mixed box prints size 20 as 60 × 23 × 4 mm. Size 20 is not one length. Match it to the jointer and the box in your hand. These sources do not give one agreed band for 18 mm sheet. Read the band on the box you buy. H9 is 3 mm, so it will not fill a standard 4 mm slot.

The four strip sections

Read the item dimensions and the model code before the title. B0FH3K9M7G agrees on about 6 × 25 × 300 mm, 15 pine pieces, £7.99. The shape field says Square, which that section is not. B0GHR2RBMX agrees on about 3 × 25 × 150 mm, 30 pieces, at £6.99, the lowest shelf price in this set. B097BHHQYJ is 300 pieces at 400 × 9 × 2 mm, £13.99. The bullets say bamboo and name models, kites, lanterns and mini houses. The material field says Wood. The best flat wood strips page names a top pick and a best value.

When the title and the dimensions fight

On B0G4QJW1D6 the title says 6 × 12.5 × 150 mm and the dimensions say 30.5 × 1.3 × 0.6 cm. Tess, reviewing in the United Kingdom on 1 October 2026, wrote that a 150 mm order arrived at about 300 mm. Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 11, says goods must match the description. That frames the contradiction. It is not a promise of a refund. If you can use about 300 mm, plan around the dimension line. If you needed 150 mm and nothing longer, do not buy this ASIN on the title alone.

What to buy for the job in front of you

A slot needs a biscuit matched to your jointer. A £7 craft pack does not replace that system. For about 6 × 25 × 300 mm pine, start with B0FH3K9M7G and check one piece. For the lowest price and a short section whose dimensions match the title, start with B0GHR2RBMX. Use B0G4QJW1D6 only if about 300 mm is acceptable. For a model or a kite, use the 2 mm SENENQU pack. The bamboo strips for model making page stays on that job.

Common questions

Is a flat dowel a biscuit or a strip?
Both names are in use, and they are not the same product. In UK joinery a flat dowel is often a compressed beech biscuit about 4 mm thick. On the four amazon.co.uk listings compared here it is an unfinished pine or bamboo strip. If you see size 0, 10 or 20, you are looking at wafers. If you see 6 × 25 mm or 2 × 9 mm, you are looking at a slat.
Which of these packs is actually about 300 mm?
B0FH3K9M7G is the pack whose title, model code and dimensions agree on about 300 mm, at 6 × 25 mm, 15 pieces, £7.99. B0G4QJW1D6’s dimensions also point at about 30.5 cm, but the title says 150 mm, and a UK review reported about 300 mm on a 150 mm order. B0GHR2RBMX is the 150 mm pack whose own dimension line says 15.2 cm. SENENQU is 400 mm.
Are the Coowayze strips hardwood?
The material field on all three Coowayze listings says Pine Wood. Reviewers in the shared text say that headlines calling the strips hardwood are wrong. Use the material field. Pine is a softwood, which matters when you sand, because workplace dust limits for softwood and hardwood differ. Nothing on the listing certifies the species beyond that field.
When is merchant stripwood a better buy than a 15-piece pack?
When you need a long run of one section, a 2.4 m length from a timber merchant is the more direct buy. Champion Timber lists Scandinavian pine stripwood in sections such as 9 × 9 mm and 6 × 18 mm, with two prices on the line. A 15-piece pack at £7.99 is for short slats around 300 mm, not for skirting a room. Merchant stripwood is still solid timber, not a compressed biscuit.
Do these listings show FSC or PEFC?
No. None of the four captured listings prints an FSC or PEFC claim. B&Q mentions those marks on its own dowels, which does not transfer to Coowayze or SENENQU. Do not assume the pine or the bamboo is certified because another seller’s round dowels are.
