How to use a drill brush

Updated: October 2026

The usual mistake is to soak a cordless drill, seat a nylon head in a loose chuck, and pull the trigger on full speed. Detergent leaves the brush in a ring. This is how to use a drill brush once a set is in the cupboard: fit the shank, tug it, stay in the lowest gear, keep the drill body dry, and wear eye protection. The [drill brush attachment sets](/hub/screws-and-accessories/drill-brush) page is the ranking if you have not bought yet. Peter F., DIY & tools editor, used the amazon.co.uk extracts and public UK safety notes on 16 October 2026. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Fit the head before you pull the trigger

Take the battery off, or unplug, then open the chuck. Seat the hex so the flats sit inside the jaws, and tighten until the head cannot rock. A 1/4 inch hex is the size most of these listings print when they print one. Tug the brush straight out. If it walks, seat it again. A UK review of the Aongray four-pack says a large head came off almost at once. A Playcrate review says the shaft slips and needs retightening. The drill brush buying guide is where a missing 1/4 inch line is sorted. If you use a short rod, fit the rod first, then the head, and tug both joints. A UK review of a QTACIE extender says the extended hex does not lock. If that joint spins free, stop.

Speed, water, and eyes

Use the lowest gear, with light pressure. Bosch’s GSR 12 V data sheet gives a first gear of 0–420 rpm on that model, so low can still be a fast brush. Wet the surface, or dip the bristles, and keep the drill body dry. Marco Paul says low speed, do not wet the drill, and wear eye protection. A Playcrate UK review says detergent is flung around the room. Safety glasses marked EN 166 are the usual UK reference. If the shower soaks the drill every week, read the drill brush versus spin scrubber page before you rinse the tool.

Pressure, a patch test, and rinse

Press as if you are wiping. A UK review of the LFSEMINI wheel brush says soft bristles can still mark a wheel if you lean on the drill. Hard nylon will haze a glaze faster. If the drill is labouring, you are pushing too hard, and the shank is more likely to walk out of the chuck. Test a hidden patch for about thirty seconds. One ERTYUI review found the nylon hard for a plastic shower. On grout, paste and dwell are a separate method. The drill brush for grout page covers that, and the point where the joint is already missing. Rinse the bristles away from the drill and let the head dry. If the patch dulls, stop. More speed will not polish that out.

When the head will not stay on

If the head creeps out, release the trigger, remove the battery, and retighten. Do not chase it with a higher gear. A Playcrate UK review says an impact driver will break the set. The hammer action is for masonry. A nylon shank is not a masonry bit. Bristles on the floor after a first wash are a different failure. A UK review of the LFSEMINI brush says they started falling out after the first use. Call someone in when the grout is missing, a tray leaks, or mould is in the plaster.

Common questions

How do you fit the shank in the chuck?
Take the battery off, or unplug. Open the chuck, insert the hex until the flats are inside the jaws, and tighten. Tug the head away from the drill. If it moves, seat it again. Fit a rod in the chuck first if you are using one, then the brush on the rod, and tug both. A click on a quick-change collar still needs that tug. Electrical Safety First’s point is the same one you use for any bit change: the tool is stopped before your fingers are near the jaws.
Which gear should the drill be in?
The lowest gear, with light pressure. Bosch’s GSR 12 V first gear is published as 0–420 rpm on that drill, so low can still be quick. These twelve listings do not print their own maximum speed. A 1,200 rpm cap quoted by UK shops belongs to Amtech-style sets they sell, not automatically to your kit. If detergent is leaving the brush in a wide ring, you are already too fast.
Do you wet the brush, the surface, or the drill?
Wet the surface or the bristles. Keep the drill body, the vents, and the battery dry. Marco Paul’s caution on its nylon kit is not to wet the drill. A Playcrate UK review describes detergent flung about the room, which is the brush and the speed, not a reason to rinse the tool. A corded drill next to a bucket adds a cable to that water.
What eye protection is the usual UK mark?
People shopping for safety glasses in the UK look for EN 166. A Silverline wire-brush sheet cites that mark and a maximum speed. The sheet is the wrong tool for a nylon drill brush, so do not copy its rpm onto your set, and do not treat one suffix on EN 166 as a rule printed for these kits. Wear eye protection anyway. The spray in the Playcrate reviews is enough reason.
Can you use an impact driver?
A UK review of the Playcrate set says not to: an impact driver will break it. Some bullets say a 1/4 inch hex fits an impact chuck. That is a physical fit. The hammer blows are a different mechanism, and a nylon head is not a masonry bit. Use a normal drill chuck, in the low gear, after the tug test.
