Drill brush for grout

Updated: October 2026

A drill brush for grout can lift surface dirt on a grey cement joint once a paste has loosened it, and the same spinning head can chew the joint if the bristles are harsh or the grout is already loose. This page stays on ceramic tile with cement grout. The [drill brush attachment sets](/hub/screws-and-accessories/drill-brush) comparison is the twelve listings. Peter F., DIY & tools editor, followed Bosch DIY’s UK grout note, Screwfix’s warning on wire pads, and the UK reviews on 16 October 2026. This is not a laboratory scrub. What a drill brush can do to a grout line

A nylon head cleans dirt sitting on cement grout. It does not replace grout that has fallen out, and it does not repair a leak. Bosch DIY’s UK guide aims the method at cement grout with at most minimal mould, after a bicarbonate paste has had time to work. If the joint is crumbly or missing, spinning nylon will widen the gap. UK reviews describe grout work after a cleaner, not instead of one. Playcrate’s title is grout and tile. ELOSIS reviews mention shower grout after bleach. The how to use a drill brush page is the chuck, the low gear, and the eye protection. If the shower soaks the drill every week, the drill brush versus spin scrubber page is the waterproof alternative.

Paste, then the brush

Bosch’s UK note uses about three parts bicarbonate of soda to one part water, left for about 45 minutes, then a brush on a drill. That is their method for ordinary cement grout, not a promise about black mould. Mix a paste that stays on a vertical joint, and keep it off stone that should not see acid later. Screwfix says to test a cleaner, and warns that wire brushes and rough pads scratch tile and wear grout. Bleach and an acid do not belong in the same bucket. ABI Interiors says not to use vinegar on marble or limestone. Wipe the bulk of the paste off before you fit the drill, so the head works on a damp joint. If the paste has done nothing in 45 minutes, more spinning will mostly polish the dirt.

Flat, cone, and speed

A thin joint needs a small contact, not the whole face of a 5 inch flat head. A US maker suggests tilting a flat brush so only the rim meets the line, or running a cone along the joint. That is a brand-site tip, not a UK test of these kits. Lytool’s bullet names a crevice head. ERTYUI’s bullet includes a pointed cone and a 6 inch extender. Stay in the lowest gear and move along the joint. Playcrate’s specification says hard nylon, which can reach a dirty cement line and can also haze a glaze if you lean. A UK review called the Aongray four-pack very stiff on grainy floor tile. Softer nylon is the kinder first head on a glazed wall. The best drill brush attachment page names Playcrate as this set’s grout-and-tile pick, with that hard-bristle skip.

When to stop

Stop when the joint is crumbling, when water is escaping, or when the black marks are in the body of the grout. Bosch’s framing assumes minimal mould on cement grout. Silicone that has gone black along a bath edge is a strip-and-replace job. Screwfix is explicit that wire brushes and rough pads scratch tile and wear grout. Rinse the line and look at it dry before a second paste.

Common questions

Flat head or cone for a thin joint?
Use a small cone or the rim of a tilted flat head so the bristles sit in the line. A full flat disc scrubs glaze you did not intend to touch. Lytool lists a crevice size among its six heads. A US brand page describes the tilt-or-cone idea. It is not a test of every kit in our table. Whichever shape you fit, tug it in the chuck first and stay in the lowest gear.
Bicarbonate paste or bleach first?
Bosch DIY UK describes a 3:1 bicarbonate paste, left about 45 minutes, then a drill-powered brush, for cement grout with minimal mould. That is the sequence to start with, on a patch. An ELOSIS review mentions bleach before the brush on shower grout. Do not mix bleach with an acid. ABI Interiors says not to use vinegar on marble or limestone. Test any cleaner the way Screwfix suggests before you treat a whole wall.
Will a hard nylon head damage cement grout?
It can, if the joint is soft, the pressure is heavy, or you stay in one spot at speed. Playcrate’s listing says hard. Aongray’s four-pack was called very stiff by a UK reviewer using it on grainy floor tile. Sound, dirty cement can take a careful pass after a paste. Crumbling grout cannot. Start on a hidden line for half a minute and look at the edges of the tile before you continue.
Is a wire brush better for black joints?
No. Screwfix says wire brushes and rough pads scratch tile and wear grout. Black surface dirt is a paste-and-nylon problem. Black growth inside plaster, or a failed seal, is not a stiffer brush problem. A wire cup from the metalworking aisle is the wrong tool for a bathroom joint. Stay with nylon, and stop if the joint is already loose.
What if the grout is crumbling?
Stop. A spinning head will knock more of it out. Missing grout, a hollow sound, or a leak at the tray is the point where a tiler should see the wall. Bosch’s drill method assumes the cement is still there and the mould is minimal. Do not fill the gap by scrubbing the edges smooth. Let the area dry and get it repaired before you think about a brush again.
