Dowel jig vs pocket hole: two holes, and a title that mixes them

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are choosing a joint for a cabinet, or you are looking at a 3-in-1 listing that says pocket hole and then offers a 15 mm straight bit. Those are not the same tool. A dowel jig vs pocket hole decision is a decision about the hole: a straight hole for a glued wooden pin, or an angled hole for a screw. A block that says both, then describes straight bushes, is a cam and dowel guide, not a Kreg-style jig. The listings are on the [dowel jig comparison](/hub/screws-and-accessories/dowel-jig). This is the method, checked on 19 October 2026, not a strength test.

Two different holes

A dowel joint is two holes on a shared centre, a wooden pin and glue. The glue is the joint. Done well, the faces stay clear unless you drill through. Depth and transfer are on the how to use a dowel jig page. A pocket-hole joint is an angled counterbore from a face you can hide. Wood Magazine sets that against a glued pin. Use the mechanism, not their shop prices. The back of a face frame is the usual place for that hole. A 15 mm straight bit is a cam. UK reviews use it on a shortened PAX or Billy. A pocket screw will not replace that cam.

When a dowel is the better fit

Choose the dowel when the face has to stay clear and the board is inside the stated range. The Dowelmaster window is 12–30 mm, with 6, 8 and 10 mm pins. Wolfcraft’s table, not a British Standard, puts an 18 mm board on an 8 mm dowel. The hole sits in the edge and the end, which suits a shelf end or a small box. Skip the dowel if you must take the joint apart next month, or if the bush is missing. One GQGP listing has a 10 mm bit and, in UK reviews, no collar. Thickness and box contents are on the dowel jig buying guide.

When a pocket screw is the better fit

Choose a pocket screw when the angled hole can hide and you want the joint pulled up quickly. Wood Magazine’s usual yes is a face frame, and the usual no is a dining table. That is a picture of where the hole may show, not a UK strength certificate. A fitter on UK Workshop said pocket-hole carcasses in MDF and chipboard failed when kitchens were moved. Another poster uses pocket screws with glue when the furniture has to come apart. A screw you can withdraw helps a flat-pack. It does not help if that screw is the only hold in a chipboard edge. None of the ASINs here shows an angled guide, and this page will not invent a strength test.

How to read a 3-in-1 title

Read the bit list before the words pocket hole. On GQGP B0D497B4CX the bullets describe straight holes and 6, 8, 10 and 15 mm bits at about £27.99. An angled guide is not described. One UK review says the 10 mm bush was missing. Idong at about £31.99 has a part number that says a 35 mm hinge jig. The lcyen kit at about £9.89 uses the pocket-hole words the same way. A 15 mm hole matters only if it matches the cam you already have. An angled screw means you put the 3-in-1 back.

Common questions

Which joint is hidden?
A dowel hides the fixing inside the edge and the end, so the show face stays clear if you have not drilled through. A pocket screw hides only if you put the angled hole on a face nobody sees, such as the back of a frame. A 15 mm cam hole is hidden only in the sense that a flat-pack cam sits in it. It is not a dowel and it is not a pocket screw. The face you care about decides which of those you can accept.
Can I use pocket screws in chipboard?
You can drive them, and people do, including on furniture that has to come apart again. A fitter on UK Workshop said pocket-hole carcasses in MDF and chipboard failed when kitchens were moved. That is one person’s site experience, not a lab result in this comparison. If the cabinet will be dragged as a finished box, do not rely on a screw in a chipboard edge as the only joint. Glue and a dowel, or a proper cabinet fitting, is the sturdier reading of that warning.
Is the 3-in-1 in this comparison a Kreg-style jig?
No. A Kreg-style jig drills an angled screw hole. The 3-in-1 listings here that say pocket hole describe straight bushes and, often, a 15 mm bit. Idong’s part number even says a hinge jig. If you need the angled screw, this shortlist does not contain that tool. Check the bullets for an angled guide before you trust the title on any similar listing.
What is the 15 mm bit for?
It is the cam or large straight hole on the GQGP, Hondong and Idong blocks. It is not a typical furniture dowel. Those are 6, 8 and 10 mm in this set. UK reviewers reach for the large hole when they shorten a PAX or a Billy and the existing cam has to match. If your fitting is a different diameter, the 15 mm bit does not become the right one because it was in the box.
When is neither right?
Neither is right for a chair, a stair or a bed rail, where a failed joint can injure someone, and neither replaces System 32 hardware if the cabinet has to hit a 5 mm shelf row. A pocket screw is the wrong repair for a cam that has pulled out of a Billy. A dowel is the wrong joint if you must dismantle the piece without breaking the glue. In those cases you want the fitting the furniture already uses, or a joiner, not a title that mentions both tools.
