Four jigs that share a name

A dowel jig guides a drill so two pieces get matching holes for a wooden pin and glue. The Wolfcraft Dowelmaster 4640000 is the handheld gauge: 6, 8 and 10 mm, board from 12 mm to 30 mm, about £12.96. UK reviews say you have to clamp it. NIYATA at about £10.59 is the ABS example. UK reviews call it flimsy and say you move it for each hole. HuuppHip at about £20.99 claims 10–170 mm, and two of six UK reviews say the centre was 1 mm or 2 to 3 mm out. Titles that say pocket hole, while the bullets describe straight holes, are covered on the dowel jig versus pocket hole page.

Diameter and board thickness

Wolfcraft’s table, not a British Standard, pairs 12–14 mm board with 6 mm, 15–18 mm with 8 mm, and 19–30 mm with 10 mm. An 18 mm board is an 8 mm dowel on that table. The Faithfull jig at Axminster stops 8 mm at 17 mm. The Dowelmaster window is 12–30 mm. Hondong pairs 8 mm with 15–18 mm and 10 mm with 19–30 mm. A wider jaw is not a truer centre. No British Standard for this jig turned up. For MDF or chipboard, HSE’s hardwood dust limit at work is 3 mg/m³. At home, do not sweep it. Use extraction, or protection at APF 20, such as FFP3.

What must be in the box

The 4640000 box is the gauge only. Bits, dowels, stops and centre points are on the 4645000 set at about £28.30. The bullets say 78 pieces, a spec field says 29, and Wolfcraft’s shop page says 79. Use the included-components line. The bush has to match the bit. UK reviews include a GQGP 10 mm bit with no collar, a Hondong 8 mm bush supplied for 10 mm, and an Idong 6 mm bit that did not fit. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives a 30-day right to reject goods that are not as described. Krysel at about £6.19 lists 41 pieces, then prints 18 g. An engraved line is only a mark, which is the self-centring dowel jig page.

Listings that are a different job

A 15 mm bit is a cam or a large straight hole, not the pin in an 18 mm shelf. UK reviews of the GQGP 8/10/15 mm jig use it on a shortened PAX wardrobe and a shortened Billy bookcase, and the cam has to match the fitting already in the board. Pocket hole on the GQGP, Idong and lcyen titles is not an angled screw guide. System 32 shelf-pin holes are usually 5 mm. A chair, a stair, a bed rail, or a run that must hit existing 32 mm hardware is a joiner’s job. A first shelf in 18 mm board, inside 12–30 mm, is the job this page is for.

Common questions

What dowel size for an 18 mm cabinet board?
Wolfcraft’s table pairs 15–18 mm board with an 8 mm dowel, so an 18 mm cabinet board is an 8 mm pin on their guidance. That is the maker’s table, not a British Standard. The Faithfull jig’s pairing stops 8 mm at 17 mm and moves 18 mm onto 10 mm. Use the table that belongs to the jig in your hand, and stay inside the thickness that listing states. Do not split the difference between the two tables.
Do I need bits in the box?
You need a bit, a depth stop and a dowel that share one diameter. The 4640000 gauge does not include them. The 4645000 set lists 6, 8 and 10 mm drills, stops, centre points, dowels and 20 ml of glue. If those are already in your drill case, the gauge is enough. If they are not, the set is the listing that puts them in one case, even though the piece-count fields on that page disagree.
Is a 15 mm bit a dowel size?
No. In this set a 15 mm bit is a cam or a large straight hole on a 3-in-1 block. A typical furniture dowel here is 6, 8 or 10 mm. UK reviews use the 15 mm size when they shorten a PAX or a Billy and the cam has to match the existing fitting. Buying the block because the title lists four diameters does not make 15 mm the pin for an 18 mm shelf.
What if the listing says pocket hole?
Read the bullets, not the title. On the GQGP, Idong and lcyen listings in this comparison the title says pocket hole and the description is a straight bush. An angled pocket-screw guide is not described. If you wanted a slanted screw hole, that listing is the wrong tool. If you wanted a dowel, ignore the pocket-hole words and check the diameters and the board range.
What if the bush does not match the bit?
Stop and check the parcel against the bullet list before you drill the workpiece. In this set, UK reviews include a 10 mm bit with no collar, an 8 mm bush supplied in place of 10 mm, and a 6 mm bit that would not enter the 6 mm hole. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives a 30-day short-term right to reject goods that are not as described. A missing bush is that problem, not a knack you learn by ruining the shelf.
