How to change a reciprocating saw blade safely in the UK

Updated: 22 October 2026

The hazard is a shank that looks seated until the first stroke pulls it out. How to change a reciprocating saw blade is the same sequence on most UK corded and cordless saws. Take the power off, clean the clamp, push the blade home, and pull it. Then keep the shoe on the work, slow down for metal, and stop when the tooth is dull. Peter F. drew these steps from DeWalt, Makita and Draper instructions and from HSE pages on 21 October 2026. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Which blade belongs in the clamp is on the [reciprocating saw blades](/hub/saw-accessories/reciprocating-saw-blades) comparison.

Take the power off, then seat the blade

On a cordless saw, remove the battery before your fingers go near the clamp. On a corded saw, unplug it. A trigger lock is not a substitute, because a nudge can still start the stroke. Brush chips out of the clamp so the tang can sit fully home. DeWalt's DCS387 manual uses a lever. Makita's DJR manuals tell you to insert until the sleeve locks, then pull. If the blade comes out in your hand, it was not in far enough. Pull-test every blade, including one the packet calls universal. A UK review of a SabreCut mixed pack says those blades do not lock in a Black & Decker Scorpion.

Plant the shoe and let the teeth cut

The shoe is the metal nose in front of the clamp. Keep it pressed on the work. Makita's manuals say that if the shoe lifts, the blade can snap, because the stroke then whips in open air. DeWalt's DCS387 manual wants the blade to extend past the shoe and the workpiece, and a blade longer than 90 mm on that saw. Treat 90 mm as that model's minimum, not as a rule for every recip saw. Metal wants a slower stroke than wood. Hilti's table for the WSR 900, 1250, and 1400-PE suggests stroke 5–6 for wood and 2–3 for steel on that saw's 1-to-6 dial.

Stop when the blade is dull or the cut is blind

A blunt tooth shows up as heat, extra push, and a job that suddenly takes longer. That is the moment to swap the blade. Pushing a dull blade is how tangs snap, which is what EZUVITA pruning reviews describe once a blade is already dull. Draper's instructions say to take nails out of reclaimed wood before you use a wood blade, and to keep out of walls until you know where the cables and pipes are. If the blade was the wrong material rather than merely dull, use the buying guide.

Vibration and dust are not a blade-life claim

At work, the Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005 set a daily hand-arm action value of 2.5 m/s² A(8) and a daily limit of 5 m/s² A(8). HSE's vibration table gives reciprocating saws a recommended initial magnitude of 18 m/s², with a range of 7–27. That 18 is a starting figure for the tool, not the dose from a short pruning job. For longer cutting in enclosed spaces, HSE wants on-tool extraction in class H or M and respiratory protection at assigned protection factor 20, such as FFP3. Ground-level green wood is on reciprocating saw blades for pruning.

Common questions

Do I remove the battery before a blade change on a cordless saw?
Yes. Take the battery off before you open the clamp, and unplug a corded saw. Makita’s DJR manuals start from a battery that is already out, then a clean clamp and a blade pushed in until it locks. A trigger lock left on, with the battery still fitted, can start the blade if the switch is nudged. The same pause applies when you swap a dull blade halfway through a cut.
How do I know the blade is locked?
Push it fully home, then pull it straight out with the saw still switched off. If it moves, refit it or stop. Makita warns that a blade which is not deep enough can eject. DeWalt’s DCS387 uses a lever. Other saws use a collar. The shared test is the pull, not the word universal on the packet. A SabreCut review that failed to lock in a Black & Decker Scorpion is a reason to test your own clamp.
Why does the shoe have to stay on the work?
The shoe stops the blade whipping. Makita’s manuals say the blade can snap if the shoe lifts off the work. Keep the nose planted, and keep the blade long enough to pass the shoe and the section, which is what DeWalt asks on the DCS387. A long pruning blade on a thin slat has a lot of free steel. That is when vibration and a snaking cut show up.
Should metal run slower than wood?
Yes, as a rule of thumb. Hilti’s WSR 900, 1250, and 1400-PE table suggests a higher stroke for wood (5–6) and a lower stroke for steel (2–3) on that 1-to-6 dial. Use the idea, and use your own saw’s manual for the numbers. Draper also wants at least two teeth in the cut on sheet, so a 5 TPI wood blade is the wrong pitch for thin metal even at a slow speed.
What vibration figure is a daily limit, and what is only a tool magnitude?
For people at work, the daily action value is 2.5 m/s² A(8) and the daily limit is 5 m/s² A(8), under the Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005. HSE lists reciprocating saws at an initial magnitude of 18 m/s², range 7–27. That 18 is not a day’s pruning dose. A blunt blade lengthens trigger time. Fitting a sharp, suitable blade is the part you can change.
