Reciprocating saw blades for pruning from the ground

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are on the lawn with a low limb you can reach without climbing. Reciprocating saw blades for pruning are the long coarse ones: about 240 mm and about 5 TPI, for nail-free green wood, used from the ground. The stated capacity is about 180–190 mm, not whatever the blade will reach. Soil, a ladder, and a limb that can fall on a path are the stops. Peter F. matched the saved listings to Bosch’s application line and to UK tree-work guidance on 21 October 2026. There is no lab test of cut speed. The pruning blade is long and coarse

Green wood wants a coarse tooth and a blade long enough to cross a stem you can still control from the ground. In this set that class is about 240 mm and about 5 TPI. SabreCut's SCRS1531L, B07VDKQFRN, states 240 mm, 5 TPI, high-carbon steel, and a cut up to 190 mm, at 4.6 from 2,587 reviews. Bosch's S 1531 L, B0009W868C, is 240 x 19 x 1.5 mm and 4.8 from 8,420 reviews. The Amazon bullets do not state a TPI. Bosch's page does: high-carbon steel, 5 TPI, capacity under 190 mm. EZUVITA's arc five-pack is 5 TPI, 240 mm total, 210 mm working length, and round wood up to 180 mm.

Stay inside the stated capacity

Bosch and SabreCut state a capacity up to about 190 mm. EZUVITA states round wood up to 180 mm, and a 210 mm working length beside a 240 mm total. Use those figures. A reviewer's 4 to 5 inches does not rewrite the capacity. A blade much longer than the stem will flex. Soil is the other limit, because grit destroys coarse high-carbon teeth. If the stem is in the ground, stop and lift the wood clear. The pull-test is on the how-to page, after the battery is out or the saw is unplugged.

Nail-free wood only

These pruning blades are high-carbon steel or chromium-vanadium. They are not bi-metal nail blades. Bosch's line for the S 1531 L is coarse wood free of nails. A screw, a wire, or a fence staple will strip the coarse tooth. If you can see a fixing, change the plan. That swap is on bi-metal versus high-carbon steel. Eye protection stays on, because green wood throws wet chips.

From the ground, and not from a ladder

Prune what you can reach with both feet on the ground. The stop is soil, ladders, and large stems. The Arboricultural Association's order is ground, then a platform, then climbing, and only when the work cannot reasonably be done from the ground. A limb that can fall on a person or a path, or a stem above the stated 180–190 mm, is the point where you book someone. Who leads this twelve for nail-free wood is on best reciprocating saw blades.

Common questions

What length and TPI are for pruning green wood?
About 240 mm and about 5 TPI is the pruning class in this set. SabreCut states both numbers. Bosch’s page for the S 1531 L states 5 TPI and 240 x 19 x 1.5 mm, while the Amazon bullets leave TPI unstated. EZUVITA states 5 TPI, 240 mm total, and 210 mm working length. A 150 mm blade is the pallet class, and it is short for a thick green stem.
How thick a stem is the blade stated to cut?
Use the stated capacity: under 190 mm on the Bosch S 1531 L and on SabreCut’s 240 mm five-pack, and up to 180 mm of round wood on the EZUVITA arc listing. A review that mentions 4 to 5 inches is one person’s cut. It does not replace those figures. A blade much longer than the stem will flex, so a thin whip on a 240 mm blade can chatter even when it is inside the capacity.
Can I use this blade if the branch has a screw or a nail in it?
No. These pruning blades are limited to nail-free wood. A screw, a wire, or a fence staple needs a bi-metal blade, or a handsaw if the fixing is the whole problem. Bosch’s application line for the S 1531 L says coarse wood free of nails. Pushing a high-carbon tooth through a screw is how the edge goes in a couple of cuts.
Should I stand on a ladder or on the soil?
Stand on the ground. Leave ladders out of this job, and keep the blade out of the soil, because grit destroys the coarse tooth. The Arboricultural Association’s order for tree work is ground, then a platform, then climbing. This page stops at the ground. If you cannot reach the cut with both feet down, it is no longer a household recip-saw job.
When is a reciprocating saw the wrong tool for the tree?
It is the wrong tool for work at height, for a limb that can fall on a person or a path, for stems above the stated 180–190 mm, and for anything that means standing on a ladder. It is also the wrong tool once the cut is in soil or through a fixing. A competent tree contractor is the right call for crown work and for any branch you cannot control from the lawn.
Does a curved pruning blade change the capacity?
EZUVITA’s arc edge does not change the stated 180 mm. The listing still gives a total length of 240 mm and a working length of 210 mm, and it describes triple-ground offset teeth. Reviews on that pack include both thick cuts and complaints that the blade was too long or harsh above about 3 inches. Keep the stated 180 mm, and treat the 3-inch comment as one reviewer’s experience.
