Guide rail for 8x4 sheets

Updated: October 2026

A standard sheet of plywood or MDF from a UK merchant is about 2,440 x 1,220 mm, and it is too big for most home table saws. A guide rail for 8x4 sheets lets you bring the saw to the board. A sheet has two directions of cut, and a rail that handles one may not handle the other. This page sets out which length does which cut, which of the five amazon.co.uk listings on the [circular saw guide rail comparison](/hub/saw-accessories/circular-saw-guide-rail) reach a full rip, and why the joint and the support matter as much as the length. Listings were checked on 15 October 2026, with no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Two cuts, two lengths

A crosscut runs across the 1,220 mm short side. A rip runs along the 2,440 mm length. The rail must be longer than either cut, because the saw needs to sit on it before the blade enters and stay on it after the blade leaves. BuildWiz UK's length table puts a 1,400 to 1,500 mm rail at crosscuts up to about 1,200 mm, and a 2,700 to 2,800 mm rail at a 2,440 mm rip. MyToolShed's Einhell FAQ gives the same picture: a 1,400 mm rail is typically enough to crosscut, and two rails can be joined for the rip. A 1.4 m rail is a crosscut tool. It takes the short side of a sheet, but a rip would mean sliding the rail mid-cut and lining it up again, which is the step that leaves a kink. Festool Owners Group users argue for 3,000 mm once parallel guides use up overhang. That is workshop experience, not a standard. Some merchants sell sheets slightly longer than 2,440 mm, so measure yours before you rely on a rail that only just covers it.

What these listings actually measure

Of the five listings, three have a length that matters for sheet work, and only one is titled at 2.8 m. The Evolution ST2800-G2 at about £90.27 is two 1,400 mm sections joined to a stated 2.8 m. Evolution's UK page says it handles full-length cuts in 8x4 sheets, and UK reviewers on amazon.co.uk describe doing that. It includes two connector bars and two clamps. That still depends on your saw fitting the groove, and some Bosch models were refused. The Einhell 2 x 1000 mm rail at about £51.95 joins to 2 m. That is more than a crosscut needs, but UK reviews say it is short of a 2,440 mm sheet, so it is not a one-pass rip rail. The BORA NGX clamp edge at about £80.00 is stated at 96 in, or 2,438 mm. That reaches an 8 ft line with very little run-on, and you steer the shoe along it. UK reviews report flex at its join. The Evolution ST1400-G2 at 1.4 m and the Divove guide, whose length is not stated, are not full-sheet rails. Who each one suits is on the best circular saw guide rail page.

The joint is part of the cut

A 2.8 m kit that bumps at the join is not a 2.8 m straight edge. Every long rail here comes in two pieces, so the connection decides whether the cut stays straight. UK reviews of the Evolution kits report ends that are not square, connectors that loosen and, on the 2.8 m kit, a joint one reviewer measured at about 1 mm high. Evolution describes its connector bars as self-aligning. Some reviewers agree and some do not. The Einhell join can bump or twist, and the BORA quick-connect join is where reviewers report movement. Check the joint every time. Assemble the rail on a flat surface, tighten the connectors, and lay a known straight edge, such as a factory sheet edge or a long level, along the joined length. Run your fingers over the join for a step. If you see light under the straight edge or feel a lip, loosen the connectors, push the sections tight and flat, and tighten again. On a full rip the saw crosses that join mid-cut, so any lip shows up in the edge.

Keep the sheet flat

A full sheet sags between trestles, and as the cut goes through the two halves pinch the blade or drop away. BuildWiz UK's rule of thumb is to lay the sheet on two rigid 50 mm foam boards on the floor or a bench, so the whole sheet and both offcuts stay supported and the blade cuts a few millimetres into the foam. That is a practical method, not a standard thickness. Grip strips can slip when they are dusty, as Einhell reviewers report, so a clamp at each end is useful on a long cut if it sits out of the saw's path. Before the first real cut, the splinter strip needs trimming on scrap and the depth needs setting for the rail. The how to set up a circular saw guide rail page covers that sequence. If you are still deciding on length, the buying guide puts it alongside fit and the box contents.

Common questions

Can I rip an 8x4 sheet with a 1.4 m guide rail?
Not in one pass. A 1.4 m rail covers the 1,220 mm crosscut with room for the saw at each end, but a 2,440 mm rip needs a rail of about 2.7 to 2.8 m. Sliding a short rail along mid-cut usually leaves a kink. In this set, only the Evolution ST2800-G2 is titled at 2.8 m.
Is a 2 x 1000 mm Einhell rail enough for a full sheet?
No. The two Einhell sections join to 2 m, and UK reviews on amazon.co.uk say that is short of a 2,440 mm sheet. It handles crosscuts and shorter rips within that length, for an Einhell plunge saw or Expert circular saw. It will not rip the full length of a standard sheet in one pass.
Is the 2,438 mm BORA clamp edge long enough for an 8 ft rip?
It reaches an 8 ft line, but with almost no run-on at either end, and a sheet slightly longer than 2,440 mm would exceed it. It is a clamp edge, so you steer the saw shoe along it. UK reviews report flex at the join, so check that the two sections sit straight before a long cut.
How do I check that two joined guide rails are straight?
Assemble the rail on a flat surface and tighten the connectors. Lay a known straight edge, such as a factory sheet edge or a long level, along the joined length, and run your fingers over the join. If you see light or feel a step, loosen, press the sections flat and together, and tighten again before cutting.
How should I support a full sheet while cutting it?
Support the whole sheet and both offcuts so nothing sags or drops. BuildWiz UK suggests, as a rule of thumb, laying the sheet on two rigid 50 mm foam boards and letting the blade cut slightly into the foam. Trestles alone let the halves pinch the blade or fall away as the cut finishes.
