How to use a wet stone grinder

Updated: October 2026

If you have just unpacked a water-cooled sharpener, the first task is not grinding a chisel. It is checking that the machine, wheel and support are sound enough to use. This guide explains how to use a wet stone grinder from pre-start inspection through wheel preparation, bevel grinding, honing and cleaning. If you are still choosing a system, see the [wet stone grinder comparison](/hub/sanders/wet-stone-grinder). Follow the manual for your exact machine, because trough levels, wheel direction, jigs and adjustments differ. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Inspect the grinder before use

Disconnect the machine before fitting or adjusting anything. Put it on a firm, level, water-resistant bench and secure it as the manual directs. Route the cable so water cannot run towards the BS 1363 plug. Do not use a stone with a crack, a significant chip or loose mounting hardware. Turn the wheel by hand where the manual permits and watch the gap to the support. A gap that opens and closes suggests radial runout. Side-to-side movement is a different fault. The wet stone grinder wheel wobble guide separates those cases. A cracked wheel, a damaged plug, a knocking bearing or a bent shaft means you stop and call a competent repairer. Wear eye protection. At work, follow your employer’s training and PUWER arrangements.

Prepare the wheel, trough and jig

Truing restores a compatible wheel to a round shape with a flat face. Grading changes the cutting character. A grader cannot correct an eccentric wheel. Fit the truing device with the grinder isolated. If the stone stays eccentric after correct truing, or the movement comes from the shaft or bearings, stop. Fill the trough to the level in the manual. A dry stone absorbs water at first start, so the level may fall. Do not copy a level from another brand. Confirm the leather wheel will rotate away from the cutting edge. Set the jig to the existing bevel where possible. There is no single angle for every tool. Jig choice is in the wet stone grinder buying guide.

Grind a controlled bevel

Let the wheel settle before you present the tool. Stop for unexpected knocking or vibration. Do not steady a suspect wheel by hand. Use light pressure and move the jig across the face so wear is not concentrated in one groove. Edge-leading means the abrasive moves towards the cutting edge. Edge-trailing means it moves away. Use only the orientations the manual approves. Look for a consistent ground surface and a small burr, and avoid testing the edge with a fingertip. If one corner arrives first, check clamping, alignment and wheel truth. If cutting slows, the stone may be glazed. Do not press harder.

Hone without damaging the wheel

Honing removes the burr. It does not establish the bevel. Use only the compound the maker specifies. The leather wheel must move away from the cutting edge. An edge presented into the leather can catch. If you cannot set that direction, stop and read the manual. Use light pressure and follow the bevel rather than rounding it. On a plane iron, keep the flat reference. A continuous clean line, with no remaining burr, matters more than a fingertip test.

Clean, dry and store the system

Wait until the wheel has stopped and disconnect the machine. Empty the trough. Do not leave the stone standing in dirty water, and do not pour water over the motor or switch. Do not true the stone after every use. Truing removes abrasive. True it when the shape needs correction, and grade it when the cut no longer suits the task. Persistent vibration, bearing noise or an electrical fault means the machine stays out of service. If the job is bulk reshaping, see wet stone grinder vs bench grinder.

Common questions

What should I inspect before switching on?
Check the wheel for cracks, chips and abnormal movement. Verify that guards, trough, support and jig are secure, and inspect the cable, plug and switch. The grinder should sit on a stable, water-resistant bench. Stop for damage, bearing play, persistent noise or electrical defects.
How high should the water be in the trough?
Use the level specified in your machine’s manual. A dry stone absorbs water, so the level may drop after startup and need topping up. Do not fill by a generic measurement because trough position and wheel diameter differ. Prevent overflow and keep runoff away from electrical parts.
What is the difference between truing and grading?
Truing removes high points to restore a compatible stone’s roundness and flat face. Grading changes or refreshes the abrasive cutting surface. A grader cannot correct radial runout, while truing does not replace the final surface preparation needed for your chosen sharpening stage.
How much pressure should I use?
Use light, controlled pressure that lets the abrasive cut without stalling the drive or deflecting the jig. If progress slows, check for a glazed stone rather than pressing harder. Move the tool across the wheel face to distribute wear and inspect the bevel frequently.
Which way should the wheel rotate?
Grinding may be edge-leading or edge-trailing when the machine, jig and manual support that arrangement. Honing is different: the leather wheel must move away from the cutting edge so the blade cannot dig into it. Confirm direction before presenting the tool.
When should I stop and call a repairer?
Stop for a cracked wheel, bent-looking shaft, bearing play, knocking, persistent vibration after correct setup, damaged guard or any switch, cable, plug, earth or motor fault. Do not improvise shims, remove guards or continue running the machine to see if it settles.
