Sheet sander buying guide

Updated: October 2026

A painted door, a few shelves or a patch of filler is already waiting, and the amazon.co.uk shelf still mixes 1/3-sheet, 1/2-sheet, cordless and multi-base sanders. This sheet sander buying guide is the order to follow before you sort by stars: name the job, match the plate and the paper, then check power and dust. The [sheet sander comparison](/hub/sanders/sheet-sander) lines seven listings up on price, specification and review evidence. Stored prices run from about £20 to about £99. This is not a lab test. Start with the surface and your working position

The plate size decides coverage per pass and how tired your arms get. A 1/3-sheet plate of roughly 90 × 187 mm is the middle ground for doors, shelves and trim. The corded Einhell TC-OS 1520 weighs a listed 1 kg and the BLACK+DECKER BEW220-GB 1.49 kg, which is why both show up in decorating reviews. A 1/2-sheet sander covers broad panels faster and weighs more. The Draper 57941 has a 225 × 115 mm pad at 2.67 kg. That suits a shed panel laid flat, not a ceiling bead. If most jobs are doors and skirting, stay with 1/3 sheet. Heavy stripping and shaped profiles need a different tool. Where the round action takes over is sheet sander vs random orbit.

Match the sheet, backing and hole pattern

1/3 sheet is a nominal size. Plates vary by a few millimetres, clamps need overhang, and holes sit in different places. Einhell gives the cordless plate as 187 × 90 mm and the hook-and-loop sheet as 187 × 94 mm. One owner found the supplied sheet did not line up, and a BLACK+DECKER buyer reports suggested Amazon sheets that did not fit. Clamp-only models such as the BLACK+DECKER and the DEKOPRO 280 W take paper cut from a roll. Owners report paper that tears. Hook-and-loop changes faster, but a DEKOPRO 3-in-1 owner says the hook face wore out within three weeks. Dual fixing, on both Einhell models, the Draper and the CAT DX44, covers both. Note the plate size and the hole pattern before you buy refills.

Compare power, speed and extraction

Wattage is the least useful headline number. The 150 W Einhell TC-OS 1520 holds 4.4 stars from 1,277 reviews. The 350 W CAT DX44 has a single rating. A 2 mm orbit is typical for finishing. The CAT's 2.4 mm orbit takes a little more per pass. Variable speed helps on veneer and filler. The DEKOPRO 280 W lists 7,000–13,000 rpm and the Draper up to 12,000 rpm. Grit and a light pass still matter more than the dial. HSE says powered sanding can create high wood-dust exposure and calls for on-tool extraction at work. A bag is not dust-free. Look for a vacuum port, such as the 35 mm connection on the cordless Einhell. The detail is in sheet sander dust extraction.

Corded or cordless

Choose corded for long sessions near a socket. The price you see is the price of the tool. Several listings state 220 V and do not describe a UK BS 1363 plug. The Draper states a BS plug. Short cables come up on the BLACK+DECKER and the DEKOPRO 3-in-1. Choose cordless when you already own the batteries. The Einhell TC-OS 18/187 Li Solo holds 4.6 stars from 1,503 reviews and costs about £41 without a battery or charger. Add those if you are new to Power X-Change. One owner says it only matches a corded sander with a strong battery. A 5.0 from one or two reviews says less than 4.4 from more than a thousand. The shortlist by job is best sheet sander.

Common questions

What size sheet sander is best for doors?
A 1/3-sheet sander is the usual choice while the door is hanging. A plate of about 90 × 187 mm covers a panel and stays light enough on a vertical face. A half-sheet covers more per pass, but at about 2.5 kg or more it tires you at shoulder height. Take the door off and lay it flat, and the half-sheet is the faster option.
Can every 1/3-sheet sander use the same sandpaper?
No. The 1/3-sheet label is nominal. Plate size, clamp length and hole pattern differ by make. Einhell's cordless model uses a 187 × 94 mm hook-and-loop sheet on a 187 × 90 mm plate. Check the manual before you order refills. Mismatched holes block extraction even when the outline looks right.
Are hook-and-loop sheets better than clamps?
Hook-and-loop sheets change faster and sit flatter. Clamps let you cut cheap paper from a roll, but loose paper tears, which BLACK+DECKER BEW220-GB owners report. The hook face can wear out. Both systems, on the Einhell models, the Draper and the CAT DX44, leave you the choice.
Is variable speed worth paying for on a sheet sander?
It helps on veneer, thin paint and filler, where a lower speed gives more control. On bare softwood you will mostly run at full speed. It does not replace the right grit or a light pass. The DEKOPRO 280 W and the Draper 57941 list a speed range. Several other models in the set do not.
Should I buy a corded or cordless sheet sander?
Buy corded for long sessions near a socket, once the plug is a UK BS 1363. Buy cordless if you already own the batteries or you work away from a socket. The Einhell TC-OS 18/187 Li Solo at about £41 excludes the battery and charger, so add those before you compare it with a corded price.
Does a dust bag remove enough fine dust?
No. A small bag catches only part of the dust, and budget-sander reviews say a lot still escapes. HSE guidance for hand-held sanders at work calls for on-tool extraction and a mask for many jobs. At home, use a vacuum where the listing gives you a port, and do not brush the fine dust up.
