How to use a sheet sander

Updated: October 2026

The sander is out of the box, the door is on trestles, and you want a smooth surface ready for paint, not swirl marks and a torn sheet. Knowing how to use a sheet sander comes down to a few habits: prepare the work, fit the paper, keep the plate flat and let the abrasive cut. Force does not speed the job. It usually spoils the finish. If you are still choosing a machine, start with the [sheet sander comparison](/hub/sanders/sheet-sander). Prepare the material and the work area

Punch nails and screws below the surface, or remove them. A fixing rips the paper and can gouge the plate. Let filler harden fully, or it clogs the sheet in seconds. Clamp a board, or lay a door on trestles so it cannot shift. Bare timber, fresh filler and sound modern paint are routine. Paint from before the 1960s can contain lead, and dry sanding spreads it. Test first, and leave a lead coating to a professional. Cover soft furnishings, open a window, and wear eye protection, hearing protection and a dust mask. The BLACK+DECKER manual lists 85 dB(A) and the Draper manual 79 dB(A).

Fit clamp or hook-and-loop paper

Disconnect the plug, or remove the battery, before you change paper. On clamps, leave enough overhang to reach both ends. Fit the front clamp, pull the sheet taut, then close the rear clamp. Slack paper tears in the middle, the common complaint on the clamp-only BLACK+DECKER BEW220-GB. Fold the ends slightly if the clamps slip. On hook-and-loop, clean the hook face, line the sheet up, and sit the paper holes over the plate holes. If they miss, extraction stops. Einhell lists a 187 × 94 mm sheet for the cordless TC-OS 18/187. Checking a refill is in the sheet sander buying guide.

Use a flat, controlled sanding pattern

Switch on before the plate touches the work, and lift off before you switch off, so the first contact does not dig in. Then set the full plate down flat. Guide the sander. Its weight plus light pressure is enough. Extra pressure slows the orbit, heats the paper and leaves marks. Move along the grain, overlapping each pass by about half the plate. A slow walking pace is a fair rule of thumb. Keep at least half the plate on the surface at an edge. Do not tip onto the corner. That rounds it and can burn veneer. On a door, sand the field first, then the edges with the plate held level.

Change grits and check the finish

Start with the finest grit that removes the problem. Around 60–80 suits rough timber or heavy paint. Around 100–120 levels filler and sound paint. From 150 upwards prepares the final coat. Starting coarse on a smooth face only creates scratches you then have to remove. Move up only when the previous scratches have gone. A damp cloth or a torch at a low angle shows what is left. A jump from 60 to 180 polishes over deep marks, and they reappear under paint. Replace the paper when it stops cutting.

Stop and clean up

Lift off, switch off, and let the plate stop before you set the sander down. Unplug or remove the battery before you empty the bag. Let a hot housing cool. Vacuum the work, the floor and the vents. Dry-sweeping puts fine dust back in the air. Empty the bag outdoors into a sealed bag. Vacuums, extractor class and masks are in sheet sander dust extraction. Stop if your hands tingle or go numb, and take a longer break.

Common questions

Should I unplug a sheet sander before changing the paper?
Yes. Disconnect the mains plug, or remove the battery on a cordless sander, every time you fit paper. Your fingers are close to the plate, and an accidental press of the switch can cause an injury. Most manuals say the same. Do it before you empty a dust bag as well.
How tight should clamp-style sandpaper be?
Tight enough that the sheet lies flat, with no slack across the plate. Fit the front clamp, pull the paper taut, then close the rear clamp. Loose paper overheats and tears in the middle. Owners of the clamp-only BLACK+DECKER BEW220-GB report that often. Fold the ends slightly if the clamps slip.
Do the dust holes in the paper need to line up with the sander?
Yes. The holes pull dust through the plate into the bag, box or hose. If the paper covers them, extraction stops and the sheet clogs. A 1/3-sheet label does not guarantee the same hole pattern. One cordless Einhell owner found the included sheet did not line up at all.
What grit should I start with on a sheet sander?
Use the finest grit that removes the problem. Around 60–80 is for rough timber or heavy paint, 100–120 for filler and sound paint, and 150 or finer before a final coat. Move up one step only when the previous scratches have gone. A jump from coarse to very fine hides the deep marks.
How much pressure should I put on a sheet sander?
Very little. Let the weight of the sander do the work and guide it along the grain. Extra pressure slows the orbit, heats the paper and leaves dips. If progress is slow, fit a fresh sheet or a coarser grit rather than pushing harder.
Why is my sheet sander tearing paper or leaving marks?
Torn paper usually means a loose clamp fit, or a protruding nail. Swirl marks usually mean too much pressure, clogged paper, or a jump in grit before the coarse scratches were gone. Refit the sheet taut, punch fixings below the surface, and change grit one step at a time.
