Sanding drum kit for a drill

Updated: October 2026

You type sanding roller into amazon.co.uk, and half the results are rolls of sandpaper or bags of flap wheels. The part you want is a rubber drum with an abrasive sleeve that you can chuck in a drill, pillar drill or rotary tool. This guide gives the order to decide in: shank first, then diameter, then grit, then piece count. It stays on the decision and leaves out fitting steps. Prices and the six-row table sit on the [sanding roller comparison](/hub/sanders/sanding-roller). What you are actually buying

Three different objects share the name. A drum kit is rubber drums or mandrels plus sleeves, and it needs a drill, a pillar drill or a rotary tool. The Draper 90469 at £57.28 is a corded 310 W machine with a 45 mm drum. A roll of sandpaper or emery cloth is a consumable sheet. Four of the six listings are chuck drum kits, from £9.60 to £17.96. One clamps cut sheet paper, at £23.99. Check the title for a drum or mandrel, and the box contents, before you read the star rating.

Shank first

The shank decides whether the kit fits. A 1/4 inch shank suits a drill chuck. A rotary tool such as a Dremel takes a mandrel in its own collet. Only LINE10 states a 1/4 inch shank. beststar is sold for rotary tools, and one reviewer returned it because they needed a drill. Hilka, FreeTec and O'SKOOL give no shank size. Reviewers do run those three in drills. Measure your chuck before you order. A kit that cannot grip is wasted, and no amount of sleeves fixes it.

Diameter against the curve

The largest drum that still follows the curve is the smoothest, because more of the surface touches the wood at once. Too small leaves flats. Too large bridges a tight hollow and never reaches the bottom. beststar runs from 1/4 to 1/2 inch. Hilka runs from 3/8 to 1 1/4 inch, LINE10 from 1/2 to 1 1/2 inch, and FreeTec from 1/2 to 2 inch. LINE10 drums are 2 inches long, and the listing says they suit holes up to 2 inches deep. The curve itself is covered on sanding inside curves.

Grit numbers, not the adjectives

A higher grit number is finer. Most kits supply 80 and 120, and LINE10 adds 60. For saw marks, 60 or 80 does the work and 120 smooths it. Hilka's listing calls 80 grit fine and 120 grit coarse, which is the wrong way round, so trust the numbers. beststar highlights 320 grit, yet reviewers report 60, 120 and 320 mixed and unmarked. O'SKOOL ships one 120 grit sheet, and a reviewer found 40 grit too thick and 180 grit too thin to stay on.

Where the six listings sit

Piece count comes last. The 338-piece beststar kit costs £12.99, less than the 16-piece LINE10 at £17.96, because most of its pieces are bands that fit badly and wear out fast. Hilka at £9.60 slips and states no shank. FreeTec at £15.95 is the widest drill range. LINE10 states the shank and three grits. O'SKOOL is one sheet drum. The Draper is a motor in the box, and one rating is not a track record. If the question is the machine, read drill drum or powered. Drill kits here state no dust port. Wear eye protection. HSE wood-dust duties sit on employers and the self-employed.

Common questions

Will a sanding drum kit fit a drill chuck or only a Dremel?
It depends on the shank. A 1/4 inch shank, which LINE10 states, suits a drill chuck. Kits sold for rotary tools, such as the beststar set, use mandrels for a Dremel-type collet. If the listing gives no shank, as with Hilka, FreeTec and O'SKOOL, measure your chuck first.
What diameter should I buy for an inside curve?
Choose the largest drum that still sits inside the curve. A drum that is too large bridges the hollow and never reaches the bottom, while a drum that is too small leaves flats. Kits that include several diameters let you match the tightest part and the open sweeps.
Should I start with 80 grit or 120 grit?
Start with the coarsest sleeve that does not tear the surface, usually 60 or 80 for saw marks, then finish with 120. A higher number is finer. Ignore adjectives such as fine or coarse on a listing and use the printed numbers.
Why does a 338-piece kit cost less than a 16-piece kit?
Most of those 338 pieces are thin sanding bands, and only nine are mandrels. The 16-piece LINE10 set has four drums and twelve resin-bonded sleeves. Reviews of the larger kit mention poor band fit and quick wear, so the count does not equal the value.
Is a roll of sandpaper the same purchase?
No. A roll of sandpaper or emery cloth is a consumable sheet and has no drum. Flap-wheel bags and polishing sticks are different tools too, even when the title says roller. You need a rubber drum or mandrel, with a matching sleeve or paper.
When is the Draper 90469 a different buy?
Choose it when you want a corded machine with its own 310 W motor and variable speed of 1600 to 3000 rpm, instead of a sleeve for your drill. It costs £57.28 and has one rating on amazon.co.uk, so treat it as a different purchase and not an upgrade.
