You have a clip block or a mouse sander on the bench, and a door that needs flatting between coats. How to use a hand sander is mostly grit order, light pressure and a way to collect that dust. Prep the surface and step the grit

Look at the coating before you fit a sheet. If the paint might contain lead, stop and bring in someone who handles lead paint. A decorator’s rule of thumb, not a figure from these listings, is to knock back filler around 120 grit and move toward 180 or 240 between coats. The listings do not print that sequence. Fit paper that matches the pad. On the Stanley STHT0-05927 the included line is a 230 x 80 mm clip block. Cut the sheet, tuck the ends under the clip, and pull the lever until the paper is drum-tight. A loose sheet bunches and scores a groove. The ProDec page does not state a sheet size, so measure the face. The wolfcraft 8722000 is five profiles, and the contents line does not include paper. If you have not bought yet, the buying guide chooses block, mouse or pole.

Use a manual block with a light hand

Hold the Stanley or the ProDec over the middle of the pad, and move with the grain on bare wood. On painted skirting, follow the board. If the Stanley lever feels slack, reseat the sheet. The weight of your hand is enough on 240 grit between coats. If you lean, a 230 x 80 mm pad cuts tramlines. Change the sheet when it shines.

Run a mouse sander without dwelling

Switch the mouse on before the pad touches the work, then keep it moving. The KATSU is 130 W at 15,000 rpm and 1.09 kg. The DEKOPRO is 180 W at 13,000 rpm and 1.61 kg. The BLACK+DECKER BEW230BC-GB is 55 W at 11,000 rpm and 980 g. All three are corded on UK 230 V mains, so look for a BS 1363 plug. Rpm figures are no-load claims. UK notes on the KATSU say the switch is awkward and that an Allen key changes the corner part. Do that with the plug out. If you park the nose, you will dish the timber. A rule of thumb is a pass of a second or two. That timing is a habit, not a figure from these reviews. Use the block on the flats. If a motor smells hot, unplug it. Whether to stay manual is on manual versus electric. Named models are on best hand sander.

Empty the dust path and know when to stop

The KATSU and the DEKOPRO use a dust box. Empty it before it is packed, with the plug out, into a bag you can seal. The BLACK+DECKER included line names a dust extraction adapter. Fit that to a Class M or H vacuum for more than a quick scuff on bare wood. HSE WD7 asks for on-tool extraction where the sander has it, and respiratory protection at APF 20 for typical woodworking. A dust box is not that mask. Manual blocks have no port. Vacuum the fallout, and do not dry-sweep it. Stop when the shine is dull. Call a professional for lead paint or a workshop that needs designed extraction.

Common questions

What grit should I use between paint coats?
These listings do not print a grit sequence. A decorator’s rule of thumb is to sand filler nearer 120 grit and to use a finer sheet, often around 180 to 240, between coats. If the sheet clogs at once, change it rather than pressing harder. Test on the hinge edge of a door before you do the face.
How do I fit paper on the Stanley clip sander?
The STHT0-05927 takes a sheet cut for a 230 x 80 mm pad. Lay the paper over the face, tuck both ends under the clip, and close the lever until the sheet is tight. UK notes say the clip holds paper, and long-tail notes mention clip wear. If the sheet creeps, reseat it. The box does not include the paper.
Does the dust box replace a mask?
No. The KATSU and DEKOPRO boxes catch some dust at the pad. HSE WD7 still points to respiratory protection of at least APF 20 for typical powered wood sanding, plus a Class M or H vacuum where extraction is fitted. The British Woodworking Federation makes a similar point for manual sanding. Empty the box with the plug out. Do not dry-sweep the fallout.
Can I sand a whole door with a mouse?
A mouse will do the moulding and the corners. Across a flat door it is slow, and a paused pad leaves a dish. Use a clip block such as the Stanley on the flats, and keep the 55 W to 180 W mice for the parts a rectangle cannot sit on. A random orbital is faster if you are stripping a lot of finish.
When should I stop and call someone?
Stop if the paint may contain lead, if you are repairing structural timber, or if the job needs designed extraction. Also stop if a corded mouse fails in the first minutes, as one DEKOPRO review describes, or if your hand is tingling. A hand sander is for prep you can see and reach.
