Start with the job and the reach

The first split is where your hand can go. The Stanley STHT0-05927 prints a 230 x 80 mm sheet area for a straight pass along skirting. A mouse sander is smaller and pointed, so it gets into the corner where a block rocks. Ceiling reach without a ladder is on pole sanders for walls. Named picks are on best hand sander.

Choose the pad before the brand

Clip blocks take paper you cut yourself. The Stanley included line is the sander only, at 230 x 80 mm, priced at £13.24 with 4.5 from 2,480 reviews. The ProDec PHST is an aluminium block at 290 g and £10.76, tool only. The wolfcraft 8722000 is five pieces at £7.05, rated 4.5 from 3,345 reviews, and the contents line does not list paper. It is the best value for profiles, and a poor substitute if you need one known rectangle. The mice use hook-and-loop pads. The KATSU at £16.99 includes ten pads, at 130 W and 1.09 kg. The DEKOPRO at £21.99 claims 180 W and fifteen sheets in the title. The BLACK+DECKER at £24.28 is 55 W, with six sheets and a dust adapter in the included line and fifteen accessories in the bullets. Dust, masks and the voltage fields that are wrong

Hand sanding still makes dust you can breathe. The British Woodworking Federation notes that manual sanding may need a respirator at APF 20 or above, such as an FFP3, with other controls. HSE guidance WD7 asks for on-tool extraction where a powered sander has it, a Class M or H vacuum, and respiratory protection at APF 20 for typical woodworking. Do not dry-sweep. The Stanley, ProDec, wolfcraft and MOGRQAP blocks have no port. The KATSU and the DEKOPRO use a dust box. The BLACK+DECKER included line names a dust extraction adapter, the closer match to WD7 if you already own a suitable vacuum. A box does not replace the mask on a long bare-wood session. If the coating might contain lead, stop. The Stanley spec table shows compressed air and 28 volts on a clip block. The ProDec table shows 220 volts on a hand-operated tool. Ignore those cells. A corded mouse needs a BS 1363 plug on UK 230 V mains. Mice here are 55 W, 130 W and 180 W. Higher watts are not smoother.

Common questions

Should I buy a block or a mouse for skirting boards?
For flat skirting, start with a clip block. The Stanley pad is 230 x 80 mm, and UK notes on that listing mention skirting. A mouse belongs on the moulded top and in the internal corners, where a flat block rocks. Many rooms need both. A mouse alone is slow on a long plain run.
Why does a manual block show 230 V or compressed air on Amazon?
The ProDec bullets say hand-operated, and the table still prints 220 volts. The Stanley table prints compressed air and 28 volts on a clip block. Those fields are listing errors. They do not mean the block plugs in or runs from a compressor. Read the title and the included line, then ignore the power-source cell.
How many sheets ship with the BLACK+DECKER BEW230BC-GB?
The included-components line lists the sander, six sanding sheets, a dust extraction adapter and a manual. Marketing bullets claim fifteen accessories and a bag. Both lines were on the amazon.co.uk page in this 19 October 2026 capture, and they do not agree. Count six sheets unless the live page’s included line has changed. The KATSU listing is clearer: ten pads are named with the sander.
Is the pole sander in this set reliable?
The AEVORA kit is £10.99 with a 47 in pole and five sheets in the title, at 2.8 from nine reviews. The review notes do not show strong UK praise, and the rank cell files it under disc sanders. It can be a trial for a small patch. It is not a substitute for a trade pole sander.
Do I need a mask for hand sanding indoors?
For bare wood, filler, or any powered mouse, follow the stricter line. HSE WD7 points to respiratory protection of at least APF 20 for typical powered wood sanding, and the British Woodworking Federation makes a similar point for manual sanding. A dust box on the KATSU or DEKOPRO reduces what you see on the floor. It does not protect your lungs.
