230mm metal cutting disc: size, metal and pack before the brand

Updated: 21 October 2026

You already have a 230 mm angle grinder, and a search for a 230mm metal cutting disc mixes thin inox discs, 3 mm steel discs and diamond wheels into one list. The disc only belongs on that machine if the diameter, the bore, the metal and the speed on the wheel agree with the job. Brand comes after those checks. Prices in GBP for the twelve rows are on the [230mm metal cutting disc comparison](/hub/sanders/230mm-metal-cutting-disc). Products Compared read the amazon.co.uk listings on 19 October 2026. Start with diameter and bore

A 230 mm disc needs a 230 mm grinder and a guard for that diameter. It will not fit a 115 mm or 125 mm machine, and a reducer is not a way to put a large wheel on a faster small grinder. The usual bore is 22.23 mm, often printed 22.2 mm. The WojBear diamond wheel states 22 mm and a 20 mm reducer, which is a different check. Match the packet to the flange you own. A disc that almost fits is the one that walks on the spindle. One Bosch listing, part 2 608 600 226, has a review saying the page can be a 115 mm disc unless you buy by part number. The Eternox reviews describe 115 mm discs while the title says 230 mm. If the packet does not say 230 mm, the star rating is irrelevant.

Steel, stainless, or a diamond wheel

A listing that says metal or steel, such as the Bosch 230 x 3 mm rows, is for ferrous steel. It is the wrong default for stainless, because a steel-only abrasive can leave iron in the edge. Use a disc that says stainless or inox for that job. Which of these twelve say it is on the 230mm stainless steel cutting disc page. A diamond wheel is a steel body with a diamond rim, not a thicker bonded disc. Here that is WojBear at £25.99 and Bosch EXPERT at £51.98 on amazon.co.uk. Bosch’s own UK shop lists the same part dearer. Those are two channels, so do not average them. A seller’s 5,000 cuts line is not a result we measured.

Thin, thick, and how many in the box

About 1.9 mm to 2.0 mm cuts a narrower slot and can flex as it spins up. About 3 mm to 3.2 mm is stiffer for heavier bar and removes more metal. Type 41 is flat. Type 42 is a depressed centre. Both are for cutting, not for grinding on the face. The wear and flex comments are on thin or thick 230mm cutting discs. A pack is cheaper per cut only if you will use the discs and the carton matches the title. Buy the single for one afternoon. Buy the pack when you already know the thickness and the metal, and you can count the discs on arrival.

Marks that do not replace the label

EN 12413 is the bonded-abrasive safety standard. Norton’s table following that standard lists 6,650 rpm for a 230 mm resinoid wheel at 80 m/s. Several listings say 6,600 or 6,650 rpm. The number on the disc wins if it is lower. One Bosch listing shows 8,500 rpm in an amazon field against a 230 mm description. That figure is the 180 mm row on the Norton table, not a target. oSa is a voluntary manufacturer mark, not a GS mark and not a CE mark on the wheel. Resin-bonded hand-held wheels carry a use-by date on the metal ring, commonly about three years. An expired, cracked or dropped disc is scrap. When those checks pass, fitting is the how to cut page.

Common questions

Will a 230 mm disc fit a 115 mm or 125 mm grinder?
No. The disc and the guard both have to be for 230 mm. A reducer only changes the bore for the spindle it was supplied with. It does not make this wheel safe on a 115 mm or 125 mm grinder, which runs much faster.
Is the bore 22.23 mm or 22.2 mm?
For most 230 mm grinders the bore is 22.23 mm, and many packets print 22.2 mm. Treat those as the same standard hole unless the packet says otherwise. A listing that says 22 mm, or that adds a 20 mm reducer, needs a look at your flanges. In this set that is the WojBear diamond wheel.
When is a 10-pack or a 25-pack cheaper per cut?
Only when you will use the discs and the carton matches the title. Parweld at £12.96 is about £1.30 a disc, under the £2.41 Bosch single, if each disc does similar work. Merryland’s title says 25 at £46.90, but the items field says 1. One job finished today is still a single-disc purchase.
Does EN 12413 or oSa mean the disc cannot shatter?
No. EN 12413 is the bonded-abrasive standard, and oSa is a voluntary mark that the maker claims to meet standards such as that one. HSE still expects the guard, eye protection and a disc used inside its marked speed. The mark is not a UK government approval of that wheel.
What if the listing speed is 8,500 rpm on a 230 mm disc?
Do not use 8,500 rpm as the target. Norton’s table puts a 230 mm resinoid wheel at 80 m/s on 6,650 rpm, and 8,500 rpm belongs to a smaller diameter on that table. If the disc is unreadable, or the packet is a different size from the title, leave it off the grinder.
Is a diamond wheel the same decision as a bonded disc?
No. A bonded disc is a consumable you expect to wear away. A diamond metal wheel, at £25.99 or £51.98 on these amazon.co.uk listings, is a steel body with a diamond rim and its own exclusions. Bosch EXPERT’s bullets exclude aluminium, concrete and stone. Still confirm the box is 230 mm.
