Fireproof safe for documents

Updated: 17 October 2026

You are holding a passport, a house deed and a certificate that only exists as paper. A fireproof safe for documents is a small chest with a paper line and an interior the sheet can enter. Litres and the word fireproof do not answer either part. Prices are on the [fireproof safe comparison](/hub/safes-and-secure-storage/fireproof-safe). The buying order is on the [fireproof safe buying guide](/hub/safes-and-secure-storage/fireproof-safe/sub/fireproof-safe-buying-guide). Products Compared editorial team, 16 October 2026. Paper, not the word fireproof

UL 72 Class 350 is a paper test. An archived UL note describes it as holding the interior to 177°C (350°F) so paper can survive the labelled period. It is not a cover for hard drives, film or USB sticks unless the listing adds a media sentence. Master Lock’s European support page treats media as a lower temperature problem than paper. A half-hour classification there is 843°C outside for 30 minutes. The Amazon Basics FP1401M prints Class 350 for 30 minutes at 843.3°C and no media sentence. The L1200 and the LCHW20101 print a half-hour UL line and an ETL media line. The FPW082FTCML prints one hour at 927°C for documents. Lock complaints on that chest belong on best fireproof safe UK. None of the nine print EN 15659 or EN 1047-1.

A4 against the interiors in this set

A4 is 210 × 297 mm. The Master Lock L1200 interior is 8.9 cm high, 30.5 cm wide and 19.1 cm deep. That depth is 191 mm, short of 210 mm, so a flat A4 sheet does not lie down. UK reviews say the same, and some people roll the paper. If the document has to stay flat, set the L1200 aside, even though the fire sentence is a real half hour. The Amazon Basics interior is 21.59 × 29.97 × 9.50 cm. UK reviews say loose A4 is tight, folders are a problem, and rounded corners can curl a sheet. The LCHW20101 interior is 11.2 × 32.5 × 21.6 cm, large enough on those numbers for a bare sheet, and reviews still call it a close fit, with sleeves as the problem. The Brihard title says A4 fits, and the inside dimensions are not stated. The one-hour chest prints 24.4 × 32 × 29.2 cm and never says A4.

Folders, pouches and media

A folder is not a loose sheet. If your deeds live in a solicitor’s sleeve, take the sleeve to the product. A passport cover can fit a chest that fails flat A4. Buy for the largest sheet you will not fold. A pouch is not a document chest. The AltiKeep listing calls its pouch A4, and UK reviews say the bag was missing or arrived as A5. The Brihard bag is a money bag with a cupboard that has no printed fire class. That fork is on fireproof safe or fireproof bag. The L1200 and the LCHW20101 state an ETL media line. The Amazon Basics Class 350 line does not. A spare centimetre is not a media test.

What an insurance schedule might pay

Home insurance does not automatically replace deeds because they were in a box marked fireproof. A West Lothian contents wording, used only as an example, caps personal money at £750 and document replacement at £1,000. Those figures are not your schedule. A fire chest can make the paper more likely to survive. It does not set the payout. These listings do not print the EN grades retailer bands attach to cash. A passport and a deed are document questions: paper line, then centimetres.

Common questions

What paper is a Class 350 line for?
Class 350 is for paper. The archived UL description holds the interior to 177°C for the labelled period so that paper can survive. The Amazon Basics FP1401M prints that class for 30 minutes at 843.3°C and does not add a media line. The L1200 and LCHW20101 are the half-hour chests here that print an ETL media line beside the paper line.
Will a passport wallet fit if A4 does not?
Often, because a passport is much smaller than 210 × 297 mm. The L1200’s 19.1 cm depth does not take flat A4, and a passport wallet can still go in when a deed will not. Fit the largest sheet you care about, not the smallest booklet.
Which interiors are too shallow for flat A4?
The L1200, at 8.9 × 30.5 × 19.1 cm, is the one the dimensions and the UK reviews agree on: A4 does not lie flat. The Amazon Basics chest is tight for loose sheets. The LCHW20101 is a close fit. Where no interior is printed, a title that says “fits A4” is unchecked.
Does a document line cover USB sticks?
Only if that listing says so. Class 350 is paper. Master Lock’s support page treats media as a lower temperature problem than paper. The L1200 and the LCHW20101 state an ETL line for memory sticks and USB drives at 30 minutes and 843°C. The Amazon Basics listing does not. A spare centimetre of space is not a media test.
Will home insurance replace the deeds if they burn?
Only if your schedule says so. An example West Lothian contents wording caps document replacement at £1,000 and personal money at £750. That is an example, not your policy. Ask the insurer what document cover you have, and which security devices they count. A named fire test can help the paper survive. It does not write the payout.
Is a fire bag the same as a document chest?
No. A tested chest has a time and a temperature on the body. A bag is a pouch, and on the AltiKeep listing UK reviews say it was missing or was A5. An A5 pouch will not hold an A4 deed flat. If you need the deed protected by a paper line, use a chest that prints one, then check the interior.
