How to use a fireproof safe

Updated: 17 October 2026

The box is on the hall floor, still taped, and you are about to drop the passports in and shut the door. How to use a fireproof safe starts before that. Copy what you cannot replace, decide where the chest will sit, and keep the only key outside it. Prices are on the [fireproof safe comparison](/hub/safes-and-secure-storage/fireproof-safe). What the fire sentence must contain is on the [fireproof safe buying guide](/hub/safes-and-secure-storage/fireproof-safe/sub/fireproof-safe-buying-guide). Copy first, then pack

Buckinghamshire Council’s advice is to copy important documents and not to risk a life for property. Store that copy somewhere that is not the same box. The chest is for the originals you still need on paper. A fire chest is a timed claim, not a promise you will never need the record again. A folder that will not go in is the wrong box. The centimetres sit on fireproof safe for documents. If the fire object is a pouch, the papers go in the pouch, and the pouch has to be in the parcel. Lock and unlock the empty chest once before you commit the originals. If you cannot carry the chest safely in a fire, leave it.

Place it, and do not drill the wrong shell

A carry-handle chest will be picked up. Put it low, on a floor you use, not on a front windowsill. If the listing includes a bolt kit, use the holes the maker drilled. The Brihard includes four anchoring bolts. UK notes on that cupboard include bolts called short, so check the screw against your floor. The one-hour Master Lock includes a waterproof bolt-down kit. One UK review of the LCHW20101 says there are no fixing holes. Do not drill a waterproof shell to invent a bolt pattern. A hole you add is a hole the listing never tested. A rented wall or a structural slab is not a Sunday experiment. A brick alcove does not create a UL class the listing never printed. If the pouch is the only fire object, that fork is on fireproof safe or fireproof bag.

Keys, codes and dust

The only key stays outside the box. Two keys are usual on the key chests here. One lives where you open the chest in ordinary weeks. The other lives at a second address. Leaving the spare inside is how a lockout becomes a lost passport. A 6-lever key and a tubular key are not interchangeable. If the listing states a key override, keep that key out of the chest. The one-hour Master Lock does not state a backup key, and UK reviews describe doors that will not lock. If the empty chest fails on day one, that is a fault under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Do not force the door. White dust in a new chest is described as normal after shipping on the Master Lock L1200 family. Wipe it with a dry cloth. If the dust is wet, or the shell is cracked, use the seller’s returns route before you store anything.

When to stop

Stop if the insurer has named a grade, if the only fixing means drilling a rented or structural wall, if a keypad has locked the only copies inside with no override key, or if the job is firearms storage. A document chest bought for passports is none of those. A missing fire bag is a consumer-rights point. Photograph the parcel and go back to the seller. Using a steel cupboard carefully will not add the fire sentence the listing left off.

Common questions

What should I copy before I lock anything in?
Copy the passport, the deeds, the insurance schedule and any certificate that would be slow to replace. Keep that copy outside the same box. Buckinghamshire Council says you should copy documents and not risk a life for property. The copy is what lets you leave the chest behind if you cannot carry it safely.
Where should a small chest sit?
Somewhere awkward to walk off with, low rather than on a front windowsill, if theft matters as well as fire. Use bolt holes the maker provided. Do not drill a waterproof shell to create new ones. A rented or structural wall is a reason to stop and ask.
Why is there white dust inside a new chest?
On the Master Lock L1200 family, dried concrete dust is described as normal after shipping. Wipe it out with a dry cloth before you add paper. The dust is not a fire rating and not a reason to wash the interior. If the shell is cracked, or the dust is wet, treat that as a fault and use the seller’s returns route before you store anything.
Can I drill the shell to bolt it down?
Not if the chest is sold as a waterproof shell and the listing does not give you holes. A hole you add is outside the test the page described. Use a bolt kit when the listing includes one, and check the screws are long enough for your floor. One UK review of the LCHW20101 says there are no fixing holes. Believe the chest in front of you.
What if the only keys are inside?
Do not drill the door. Use the second key if it really is elsewhere, or the seller’s lost-key route if the listing offers one. If a keypad has shut with no override key and the only copies are inside, stop and call a specialist. Forcing it can wreck the papers and the seal.
What if the fire bag was not in the box?
Then the fire claim on a bag-only listing was not delivered. Photograph what arrived and go back to the seller. Do not treat the steel cupboard as tested because the title said fireproof. An A5 bag, when the listing said A4, is the same kind of gap.
