DeWalt plunge router vs trim router

Updated: October 2026

You can describe the cut and still not know the base. A DeWalt plunge router vs trim router choice is about how the cutter meets the wood. An edge can be a trim base. A cut that starts in the face needs a plunge. This page is from the Products Compared editorial team on 16 October 2026, using DeWalt’s UK pages and the ten listings in our [DeWalt router comparison](/hub/routers/dewalt-router). We did not cut a test panel. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. Two ways the cutter meets the wood

A trim router, or any fixed palm base, holds one height. You set it with the motor off and start where the edge lets the bit in. A plunge router hangs the motor on springs. The base sits flat, you start the motor, lower the cutter to a stop, and lift it clear before you put the tool down. A groove can then begin in the middle of a board. DeWalt’s DCW604 class gives you both bases on one motor. You swap the base. You do not ask a fixed casting to plunge.

When a trim or fixed base is enough

On an edge, a trim base is often the better tool because you are not fighting the spring. Flush-trimming laminate, rounding a shelf, and chamfering a door are that work. UK reviews of the TOPWAY, fixed base, £49.99, 1.74 kg, mention doors and hinge recesses on DeWalt packs. A shallow recess entered from the door edge can work. A recess surrounded by wood cannot, not on a fixed base. A cheap fixed body will not grow a plunge later.

When you need a plunge

Stopped grooves, inlays, a mortice in the middle of a stile, and template cuts inside a panel need a plunge. You set the turret, plant the base, and lower the bit. DeWalt’s UK DCW620 kit page lists a 70 mm plunge, a 63 mm maximum cutter, and 6.35 mm and 12.7 mm collets. The DCW604 plunge is shorter, about 55 mm on bare-unit wording, with a 30 mm cutter. You can lock a plunge and edge-rout. The weight is the cost. The DCW620B item line says 5.1 kg, not DeWalt UK’s 3.6 kg gross, and not a 1.74 kg palm tool. UK worktop jigs expect a half-inch plunge router and a guide bush. A quarter-inch palm trimmer does not meet that.

What these listings actually are

The DCW620B at £324.98, tool only, is the plunge router and the only DeWalt. The title says plunge and the bullets include a three-position turret. Collet size is missing there, so 6.35 mm and 12.7 mm come from DeWalt’s kit page. The only UK review says it failed after eight months. Both JOJOCY listings and the TOPWAY are fixed. L1NXIXI, YWNYT, and Chengsuwei leave the base blank. A blank is not a plunge. The RAYLEEY spec says plunge and the title says palm. Do not plan a stopped groove on a base the listing describes twice. If the cutter must enter the face, the plunge row in this set is the DCW620B. Named picks sit on the best DeWalt router page.

Common questions

What is the difference between a plunge router and a trim router?
A trim router holds one height and starts from an edge. A plunge router lowers the cutter into the face and lifts it out, so a groove can stop short of the end. You can lock a plunge and use it on an edge. You cannot make a fixed base plunge. Palm tools here are about 1.6 kg to 2.3 kg. The DCW620B line says 5.1 kg.
Can I edge-rout with a plunge router?
Yes. Lock the depth and run the fence or a bearing. The DCW620 will round an edge and it is heavier than a palm trimmer. Here it is £324.98 without a battery. Use it on edges when you also need the plunge. A single chamfer does not justify it if a small fixed base would do.
Can a palm router start in the middle of a board?
Not cleanly, if the base is fixed. The cutter is already down, so it must enter from an edge or a drilled hole, and that entry shows. Most compatible routers here are fixed. A palm title means that, unless the spec says plunge as well, which is a conflict rather than a feature.
Does the DCW604 have both bases?
Yes. DeWalt’s UK DCW604 class is an 8 mm router with a fixed base and a plunge base, and a 30 mm maximum cutter. The plunge is shorter than the DCW620’s. It is not one of these ten listings, so it has no amazon price here. A third-party fixed palm tool does not include the second base.
How deep does the DCW620 plunge?
DeWalt’s UK kit page lists 70 mm of plunge and a 63 mm maximum cutter. The DCW604 class is about 55 mm and is a different router. The amazon DCW620B file does not print 70 mm. It lists a three-position turret. 70 mm is the travel, not a single pass.
Why does one listing say plunge and palm?
The RAYLEEY does. The spec says plunge and the title says palm trimmer, £61.99, 3.4 from 14 reviews. UK reviews describe chamfers, not a stopped groove. Do not buy it as your only way to start in the middle of a board until you can see the base.
Do I need a plunge router for a worktop jig?
Yes, if you follow UK jig instructions. They expect a half-inch plunge router and a guide bush. A fixed palm router on a DeWalt battery does not meet that. In this set the half-inch plunge router is the DCW620B. A sink or hob cut-out is a joiner’s job if you are new to templates.
