Grow tent setup UK

Updated: 21 October 2026

The tent is already chosen, and the room still looks like a pile of poles and a black skin. This grow tent setup UK is the order that keeps you from hanging a lamp before the frame is square: clear the floor, build the poles, fit the fabric, drop in the tray, open the ducts, then put the separate lamp and fan on a UK plug. It assumes a fabric tent from the [grow box comparison](/hub/raised-beds-greenhouses-and-compost/grow-box), not a mushroom chamber. Prices and parts are the amazon.co.uk listings read on 19 October 2026. Peter F. did not run a lab test. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Before you unpack

Measure the ceiling, the door swing, and the path to a window or an outside wall before you click the first pole. The Mars Hydro 60 cm tent is 140 cm tall, the VIVOSUN is 160 cm, and the 120 cm Mars Hydro is titled 180 cm. You need that height plus a little clearance so the top bars are not jammed into the plaster. A tent that blocks a doorway or a smoke alarm is in the wrong place, even if the footprint fitted on paper. One Mars Hydro reviewer could not follow an instruction to lay the tent on its side under an ordinary ceiling. If your room is that tight, build it upright in the final spot rather than forcing the lay-down step, and read the small grow tent page if the centimetres were the real problem.

Frame and fabric

Mars Hydro bullets describe metal poles, corner adapters, top bars, and pop snaps. VIVOSUN describes tool-free corner connectors and says the tent can go up from the instruction sheet in minutes. A five-to-ten-minute setup note in the Mars Hydro file belongs to the saved texts, which the 120 cm listing repeats, so do not treat it as proof for the 180 cm tent. Stand the frame and check it is square before you wrestle the skin on. Unequal pipes that will not let the zip close show up in Mars Hydro UK texts, along with rust on pole ends. If a pole is bent in the carton, stop and use the returns route rather than bending it straight. The Oairgico, at 55 × 40 × 65 cm and 1.53 kg, is a much smaller frame. UK texts call that one a weak seedling tent, so do not load it like the VIVOSUN, whose listing claims each top bar holds up to 100 lb.

Tray, windows, and ports

Each of the four tents states a removable floor tray and a viewing window. Seat the tray inside the tent so spills stay on the tray rather than on the carpet. Mars Hydro calls its tray detachable and waterproof in the bullets. Oairgico UK texts describe a floor and roof that do not seal, so do not assume a litre of water will stay put in the small tent. Empty the tray when soil and leaves collect. A window with a flap lets you look in without opening the main zip every time. Duct sleeves and cable ports are not the same hole. Use a sleeve for the extract duct and a smaller port for the power lead, and close the ones you are not using. Light at Velcro vents is a repeated Mars Hydro complaint, so a port left flapping is a leak you can see with the room lights off and the grow lamp on. The tent does not include the ducting, the fan, or a carbon filter. If the carton is missing the tray the listing promised, the grow box buying guide lists what these shells leave out.

Lamp, fan, and UK power

Hang the lamp from the top bars only after the frame is locked, and keep the lamp’s own clearance above the leaves. None of these tents includes that lamp. VIVOSUN supplies two hanging straps and says they can help fix a carbon filter. The filter itself is still a separate purchase. You usually want extract air leaving the tent and a way for fresh air to come in. A single blocked sleeve with no intake path just collapses the skin onto the plants. The Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016, regulation 35, say equipment that plugs into a UK socket must suit BS 1363, with a standard plug or a conversion plug and a BS 1362 fuse. A 110 V, 277 V, or two-pin lead with no fused UK conversion is a stop. London Fire Brigade advice is to avoid overloading an extension lead and to unwind a cable drum. These listings do not state a lamp wattage, so do not treat a 600 W example from another guide as a figure we measured. If the plug scorches, the breaker trips, or you need a new socket, call an electrician. Do not open the consumer unit yourself.

First run checks

Close the door, cover the window, and shut unused ports. Turn the lamp on and walk around the tent in a dark room. You are looking for pinholes at zips, seams, and Velcro vents, which Mars Hydro UK texts already report. A zip that will not meet is a faulty tent, and Which? puts the Consumer Rights Act 2015 short-term right to reject at 30 days. On the first hour, feel the plug and smell for hot plastic. Check that the tray is catching drips and that the duct is not kinked flat. Mushroom chambers are a different build. BEIXIFO and MUALROUS are not assembled like this. The grow tent or mushroom chamber page is the split if you ordered a fungi box by mistake. This setup does not cover cannabis cultivation.

Common questions

Do I build the frame first or unfold the fabric?
Build a square frame, then fit the skin. Mars Hydro and VIVOSUN both describe poles and corner connectors before the tent is a cabinet. Unfolding the fabric in a cramped hall and hoping the poles find the sleeves is how zips end up twisted. If the ceiling is too low to lay the tent on its side, assemble it upright in its final place. Check the door faces you before you hang a lamp.
Where do duct ports and cable ports go?
Put the extract duct on a sleeve you can route toward a window or an outside wall, and put the power lead through a smaller cable port so the main zip does not clamp the flex. Close every port you are not using. Light leaks at Velcro vents are a known Mars Hydro complaint, so an open flap is not a minor detail. The tent does not include the duct, the fan, or the filter.
Does the floor tray sit inside or outside?
Inside. The listings describe a removable tray that holds soil and spills. Seat it flat before you add pots. Mars Hydro calls the tray waterproof in its bullets. Oairgico UK texts say the floor does not seal, so do not pour water onto that small tent and expect it to hold. Lift the tray out to clean it rather than hosing the carpet around the tent.
How do I hang a lamp on the top bars?
Lock the frame first, then hang the lamp from the top bars with the straps or hangers the lamp maker supplies. VIVOSUN includes two hanging straps and claims each bar holds up to 100 lb, which is the seller’s figure. The lamp is not in the tent box. Leave the manufacturer’s gap between the lamp and the leaves, and do not rest a hot housing on the mylar.
Do I need intake and extract fans?
You need a way for air to leave and a way for air to enter, or the tent pulls in on itself. These listings do not include an extract fan. Many people use one fan on the extract and a passive intake port. A carbon filter is optional for smell and is also not in the box. If you are only covering seedlings in the 65 cm Oairgico, a full ducted fan may not fit at all.
When should I call an electrician?
Call one for a new socket, scorch marks, a hot plug, or a breaker that trips when the lamp starts. Also stop if the lead is 110 V, 277 V, or a two-pin plug with no BS 1362 fused conversion. Do not overload an extension lead, and unwind a cable drum. Building the tent poles is ordinary assembly. Altering the house wiring is not.
