Grow box buying guide UK

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have a corner of a flat, a cupboard, or a spare room, and the amazon.co.uk results all say grow box. Some of those listings are fabric tents for green plants. Two of them are small mushroom chambers. This grow box buying guide keeps the order straight: choose the organism, then the footprint and the ceiling, then the lamp and fan the tent does not include. The [grow box comparison](/hub/raised-beds-greenhouses-and-compost/grow-box) names a top pick inside six listings. Peter F. checked the amazon.co.uk listings on 19 October 2026 and the public UK sources below. This was not a lab test. What counts as a grow box here

A fabric grow tent in this set is a collapsible cabinet: metal or alloy poles, a dark outer cloth, a mylar lining, zips, a window, a floor tray, and sleeves for ducts. Mars Hydro describes diamond mylar, a shade cloth along the zip, and 1680D canvas. VIVOSUN describes Oxford canvas and tool-free corner connectors. You still buy the lamp. The tent only holds it. A mushroom chamber is a different object. MUALROUS, at £120.99 and 2.66 kg, claims humidity control, two fans, a clear door, and a foldable body, and it names shiitake, oyster, enoki, and reishi. BEIXIFO, at £317.13, claims an acrylic and tempered-glass box about 40 cm long, with an LCD, automatic humidity and spray, a fan, and a grow light in ten steps. Neither chamber has written UK reviews in the files we saved, so those features stay seller claims. A 4.4-star tent does not outrank a chamber, because the crops are not the same job. If you already know you are choosing between those two tools, the grow tent or mushroom grow box page stays on that choice.

Size and height in the room

Measure the floor and the ceiling before you trust a title. In this set the Oairgico tent is 55 × 40 × 65 cm at £42.90. The Mars Hydro 60 cm tent is 60 × 60 × 140 cm at £56.99. The VIVOSUN details line is 81.3 × 81.3 × 160 cm at £84.99, while the title rounds that to 80 × 80 × 160 cm. The longer Mars Hydro tent is titled 120 × 60 × 180 cm at £119.99, with 1.3 cubic metres printed as chamber volume. Its technical dimensions field was empty, so the title is the size line you can actually use. A 65 cm external height, the Oairgico figure, leaves almost no room once a lamp hangs above a pot. The 140 cm Mars Hydro is the first height in this set that can take a short canopy, and the lamp still eats part of that 140 cm. The 120 × 60 cm tent needs a spare-room floor, not a wardrobe. How those footprints sit in a flat is the job of the small grow tent for a UK flat page.

What is not in the box

All four tent listings describe a floor tray, a viewing window, and openings. None lists a lamp, a carbon filter, or an extract fan in the included lines. VIVOSUN’s included line is a removable mylar tray. One Mars Hydro UK review of the £56.99 tent says the box has neither a fan nor lights. A light-source wattage of 220 watts on the VIVOSUN page is not a lamp in the carton. If you budget only the tent price, you will be short on the day it arrives. Hydroponic Advice, a UK-facing setup guide, puts a budget 60 × 60 cm arrangement around £200–£300 once the lamp and the fan are added. That range is their rule of thumb, not a total printed on these six listings. 1680D on a Mars Hydro bullet is a canvas-density claim, and mylar is the reflective film. Neither phrase is a measured light-lock test. Named picks, after you have accepted this extra spend, sit on the best grow box in this set page.

UK electrics and fire basics

The tents list no plug, because they list no mains part. The lamp and the fan you add are the electrical products. The Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016, regulation 35, say domestic equipment that plugs into a UK socket must suit BS 1363, either with a standard UK plug or with a conversion plug fitted with a BS 1362 fuse. A two-pin lead with no fused UK conversion is a reason to stop, not a reason to improvise with a shaved adaptor. London Fire Brigade advice on cables applies once that lamp is on an extension: do not overload the lead, and unwind a cable drum so the flex can shed heat. These listings do not state a lamp wattage, so this page will not invent one. If a plug runs hot, a breaker trips, or you need a new socket, that is electrician work. The same is true if the tent would block a door or a smoke alarm.

Lawful crops

A tent is not a licence. Under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, section 6, cultivating cannabis is unlawful unless regulations allow it. The Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2001, regulation 12, limit cultivation to a Home Office licence. The Drugs Act 2005, section 21, classifies a fungus that contains psilocin as Class A. Oyster, shiitake, and enoki, which the MUALROUS listing names, are not that fungus. Reishi on the same bullet is a named culinary species on that page, not permission for any other fungus.

Common questions

Is a grow box the same as a grow tent?
In this comparison, four listings are fabric grow tents and two are mushroom chambers. Shoppers type grow box for both. A tent is a reflective cabinet for green plants and a lamp you buy separately. MUALROUS and BEIXIFO are small fungi boxes with humidity claims and almost no written UK reviews. Match the tool to the crop before you compare prices.
Does the tent include the lamp and the fan?
No. The included lines on the four tents name a tray and tent fabric, not a lamp, a carbon filter, or an extract fan. One Mars Hydro UK review of the £56.99 tent says the same thing in plain language. VIVOSUN’s 220 watt light-source field is not a lamp in the box. Budget the tent, then the lamp and the fan as separate amazon.co.uk purchases.
What size tent fits a flat cupboard?
The 55 × 40 × 65 cm Oairgico is the only footprint here that is cupboard-scale, and 65 cm of height is a seedling box rather than a fruiting tomato tent. The 60 × 60 × 140 cm Mars Hydro needs a tall cupboard or an open corner. Measure floor and ceiling before you order. The small-room page works through those centimetres in more detail.
Can I grow mushrooms in a fabric tent?
A fabric tent is built to hold a lamp over green plants, not to hold still, humid air for fungi. GroCycle treats a monotub and a tent as different mushroom tools, and a monotub is not one of these six listings. If you want a chamber, look at the MUALROUS or BEIXIFO claims and treat the automation as unproven here. Culinary names on a listing are not a licence for a psilocin fungus.
Is indoor growing legal in the UK?
Herbs, chillies, tomatoes, and culinary mushrooms such as oyster and shiitake are ordinary crops. Cultivating cannabis is unlawful under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, section 6, unless a Home Office licence applies. A fungus containing psilocin is Class A under the Drugs Act 2005, section 21. Buying a tent does not change either rule.
What plug do I need for the lamp?
The tent has no plug. The lamp and fan must suit a UK socket under the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016, regulation 35: a BS 1363 plug, or a conversion plug with a BS 1362 fuse. Do not overload an extension lead, and unwind a cable drum, as the London Fire Brigade advises. Stop and use an electrician if the plug runs hot, the breaker trips, or the lead is a two-pin type with no fused UK conversion.
