Table saw or circular saw

Updated: October 2026

You have an 8 by 4 sheet, about 2440 x 1220 mm, and you are choosing who moves. A table saw or circular saw decision is that choice. A table saw repeats a width on stock you can support. A circular saw, or a track saw, stays on the sheet. The bench listings are the [table saw comparison](/hub/power-saws/table-saw). A printed rip is the [table saw buying guide](/hub/power-saws/table-saw/sub/table-saw-buying-guide). Hand-held models are the [Bosch circular saw comparison](/hub/power-saws/bosch-circular-saw). Listings are from 15 October 2026. No lab cut. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What each saw is for

A table saw puts the blade up through a table and you move the wood. The fence is there so the next piece matches the last: repeat cuts where the machine stays put. A circular saw moves across the work. A track saw is a circular saw on a rail, not a third machine with a rip fence. The hub page which saw for a sheet of timber also covers mitre saws and jigsaws. This page stays on support, the fence, and the rip figures in this set. A mitre gauge is not a sliding mitre saw.

The sheet that does not fit

A full 2440 x 1220 mm sheet does not cross a hobby table cleanly. Homebuilding’s reason for a track saw is that you are not pushing a floppy panel. Half of 1220 mm is about 610 mm, a rule of thumb from the sheet, not a cut we measured. A table saw helps only if the listing prints a rip at least that wide and you can support the sheet. Only the Bosch GTS 635-216 and GTS 70-216 print a rip: both say 635 mm. The GTS 635-216 is £428.95 and states 70 mm and 240 V. Its wattage field says 1.6 W against a 1,600 W title. The GTS 70-216 is £588.45, with no star line and no voltage in the raw file. Do not give the Einhell or the Fury 5-S a width. An extension is a rest, not 635 mm.

When the table saw is the right buy

Buy the table saw when the piece fits a stated fence width and you will repeat it. Narrow shelf rips and short solid timber are the bench saw’s work. Use a circular saw or a track saw when the sheet stays on the floor, you are in a hallway, or the listing states no rip. A multi-material blade, on the Fury 5-S or the R255TBL+, is a rougher edge than a wood blade.

What to do next

If the sheet is the whole job and you have no stated rip, do not buy a bench saw to solve it. Look at a circular saw with a guide long enough for 2440 mm. If you will rip stock that already fits, treat only the two Bosch titles as a printed 635 mm rip. A hallway is not a workshop. Break the sheet where it lies, then rip the smaller pieces on a bench if you have one. Updated 16 October 2026 by the Products Compared editorial team.

Common questions

Should I buy a table saw to break down plywood?
Only if the piece fits a rip the listing actually prints, and you can support the sheet. In this set only the Bosch GTS 635-216 and GTS 70-216 print 635 mm. A full 2440 x 1220 mm sheet is still a poor fit on a small bench. Homebuilding’s practical tool for the whole sheet is a track saw, because you are not manoeuvring the panel across the table.
When is a circular saw with a guide the better tool?
When the sheet stays on the floor, the space is a hallway, or the table-saw listing does not state a rip. A guide or a track keeps the circular saw straight. A short included track is not an 8 by 4 sheet. You reset the guide for each cut, which is slower than a locked fence once the pieces are small enough for the bench. The hand-held Bosch models are on their own comparison.
What rip capacity do I need for half a sheet?
Half of a 1220 mm sheet is about 610 mm, a rule of thumb from the sheet, not a test. A stated rip of 635 mm, which both Bosch titles here print, clears that figure on paper. You still need infeed and outfeed. Listings that only say the table extends do not give you 610 mm. Do not assume it.
Which saws in this set print a rip figure?
The Bosch GTS 635-216 at £428.95 and the GTS 70-216 at £588.45. Both state 635 mm and 70 mm height. The GTS 635-216 has 4.5 from 186 reviews and a wattage field that says 1.6 W. The GTS 70-216 has no star line and no voltage in the raw file. No other kept listing states a rip in millimetres. The Einhell and Evolution pages are not given a guessed width.
Will a multi-material blade leave a furniture edge?
Treat it as a rougher edge. The Fury 5-S and the R255TBL+ include a multi-material blade for metal, wood and plastic. Clean veneer usually wants a wood blade and support under the fibres. A scoring blade is not claimed on any listing here. Tear-out on the underside is still yours to manage with a sharp blade and a supported cut.
What if I only have a hallway, not a shed?
Keep the sheet on the floor and use a circular saw with a guide, or a track, if you can stand beside the cut. A table saw in a hallway still needs space in front of the blade and behind it, which an 8 by 4 sheet will not give you. Break the sheet down where it lies, then rip the smaller pieces if you have a bench. If you cannot support the timber, do not start the cut.
