Metal circular saw buying guide UK

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are in a garage with mild-steel box, a sheet offcut, or timber that still has nails in it, and a wood circular saw that was never sold for that job. A metal circular saw buying guide UK shoppers can use starts with the material, not the star rating. This page orders the choice among five corded listings on the [metal circular saw comparison](/hub/power-saws/metal-circular-saw): one Evolution steel saw, three Evolution multi-material saws, and a compact Enventor. Prices are amazon.co.uk shelf prices from 20 October 2026, about £49.99 to £116.00. Products Compared did not lab-test them. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What counts as a metal circular saw in the UK

On amazon.co.uk the phrase usually means a 230 V handheld circular saw with a carbide-tipped blade sold for dry cutting of mild steel, aluminium, or mixed materials. It is not a spare blade, a wood-only saw, or a floor chop saw. This set dropped seven listings that were blades or timber saws. The materials row on the S185CCSL says alloy steel while the bullets name a 40-tooth mild-steel TCT blade, so those lines disagree. Read the bullet as the blade description.

Dedicated steel versus multi-material

If plate or box is a regular job, the S185CCSL is the listing written for it. A UK reviewer describes 5 mm plate and a clean edge, and says the saw is loud enough for ear protection. Fifty-four reviews is a thin file, and the depth scale is the complaint that repeats. If timber dominates and metal is occasional, the R185CCS is the better-matched spend. It is the best value in this set for mixed renovation. It is a poor substitute if you expected a track. The R185CCSX+ adds a bag and a claimed brake, not a 40-tooth mild-steel blade or the rail.

Blade size, motor, and stated capacity

Four of the five saws are 185 mm and 1600 watts. The Enventor is 705 watts, with a stated depth of 42.8 mm at 90°. The Evolution bullets state a depth up to 64 mm. That is the adjustment range, not a promise that 64 mm of mild steel is a fair cut. A UK dealer page for the S185CCSL publishes an example plate capacity of 8 mm. Treat that as the dealer’s figure for that model only, not a test we ran, and do not copy it onto the R185 or the Enventor. The R185 bullets do not print a plate thickness. Read the live bullet and stay inside it. The TCT and abrasive comparison covers discs.

Tracks, plugs, and workshop noise

Only the R185CCSX puts a 1,020 mm track in the box, which is why it costs about £46 more than the R185CCS. That same bullet says EU plug. UK mains are 230 V and the plug you want is BS 1363. Open the carton before you rely on an adaptor. The R185CCS title includes a parallel edge guide and then rules tracks out. HSE engineering noise tables put circular sawing of metal at roughly 95–105 dB(A). HSE’s EIS12 note on metal-cutting circular saws says you do not clear swarf while the blade is spinning. The how to cut metal page walks through the clamp.

Common questions

Do I need a steel-only saw or a multi-material R185?
You need the S185CCSL, about £105.00, when mild-steel plate or box is regular work and you want the 40-tooth blade. You need an R185 when timber, nails and thin metal share the week, and the R185CCS at about £69.95 is the best value of those. The steel saw is a lot of tool for one stud. The multi-material saw is the wrong default for weekly plate. Fifty-four reviews on the S185 is a thinner file than 1,118 on the R185CCS.
What mild steel thickness can a 185 mm saw cut?
Use the figure published for that model. A UK dealer page gives the S185CCSL an example of 8 mm mild-steel plate. That is dealer data, not our measurement, and not a limit for the other saws. The R185 files do not print the same thickness. The stated 64 mm depth is the adjustment range, not 64 mm of solid steel. If your plate is thicker than the published line, use a different machine.
Does a track kit change metal capacity?
No. The 1,020 mm track on the R185CCSX helps a long straight line. It does not increase how thick a cut the blade may take, and it does not turn a multi-material blade into the S185’s mild-steel blade. You pay about £116.00 for the rail in the box, against about £69.95 with no track. That track listing also states an EU plug, so confirm BS 1363 in the carton.
Will a mini saw cut steel box section?
Not as a substitute for the Evolution saws. The Enventor is 705 watts, about £49.99, with a stated 42.8 mm depth and HSS blades described for soft metal. The 115 mm size is in the bullets, not the diameter field. A review could not undo the blade bolt. Box and plate belong on a 1600 watt listing that names that duty, or with a fabricator if the section is structural.
How do I know the plug is a UK plug?
These are 230 V corded tools, and a UK socket expects a BS 1363 plug. The R185CCSX bullet says EU plug in the same line as the track. Other reviews mention plug or packaging confusion even when the bullet is quiet. Sort a wrong plug before the first cut rather than living on an adaptor. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 still applies if the tool itself is faulty.
