How to use a DeWalt cordless circular saw

Updated: October 2026

The saw is already chosen, or you are checking the setup before you buy. How to use a DeWalt cordless circular saw, on a bench in a UK garage, comes down to a depth you can name, a board that cannot close on the blade, and a lower guard that springs back. This page does not rank the three bodies. The [DeWalt cordless circular saw comparison](/hub/power-saws/dewalt-cordless-circular-saw) is the table if you are still choosing. Set the depth from a figure you can name

Set the shoe on the wood and lower the blade until the teeth just clear the underside. That is a rule of thumb, not a measurement we took. Only the DCS565 amazon file states a maximum: 55 mm, with a 50° bevel. Thicker timber will not finish in one pass on this body. DeWalt’s page also says 55 mm at 90° and 4,950 rpm. The amazon speed field is empty, so that rpm stays a manufacturer figure. The DCS572 listing states no depth. DeWalt’s page says 58 mm, or 54 mm on a guide rail, and a bevel to 57°. The amazon angle field says 45°. Name DeWalt when you use 57°. The DCS512 listing states no depth, and the blade-length field says 12 inches. DeWalt’s page says a 140 mm blade and up to 47 mm. A bevelled cut is shallower than the 90° figure.

Support the board and keep the guard free

Support both sides so the offcut cannot sag into the blade. A closed kerf is kickback on a hand-held saw: the blade binds and the saw climbs back towards you. Let the blade reach speed, then move through the cut. The lower guard has to ride up as you enter and spring back when you leave. The DCS572 and the DCS512 name a brake. The DCS565 does not, though one review says the blade stops when the trigger is released. These bodies are hand-held saws under BS EN 62841-2-5:2014. HSE’s rip-saw page describes a bench, with a riving knife. You do not fit a riving knife to these DeWalt saws. It does not remove the bind. A rail for the 184 mm body belongs on the guide rail page.

Dust and noise before the first indoor board

A cordless motor does not make less dust. The dust is the timber. HSE expects on-tool extraction to an M-class or H-class unit, and RPE at APF 20, with FFP3 as the example, for about 15 to 30 minutes of trigger time, especially indoors. One DCS572 review says collection is weaker than on a plunge saw. Only the DCS565 bullets name an AirLock connection. None of the three files states a decibel figure. Employer noise duties use 80, 85, and 87 dB(A), and those thresholds are not a measurement of these saws. PUWER, in HSE’s INDG291, does not cover DIY in a private household. It does cover work that can harm other people. The buying guide is where the pack and the box are sorted.

Stop, and who should take over

Stop when the guard sticks, when the motor smells of burning, or when the saw stops and clunks. One DCS572 review describes that sequence after two days. Unclip the pack. A factory-tight blade bolt showed up in one DCS572 review, and the reviewer calls the thread righty-loosey. That is one saw’s bolt. Call a joiner for overhead work you cannot control, for structural timber, and for a stair or a worktop you cannot redo. A roof plunge in one DCS565 review is not a first-cut template. An 18 V pack on the DCS512 does not fit. The 12 V or 18 V page is that mismatch. If the lower guard does not cover the blade at rest, the saw is not ready to start.

Common questions

How far should the blade stick out under the wood?
As a rule of thumb, the teeth should just clear the underside. That is not a DeWalt measurement and not a figure from these listings. The DCS565 states a maximum of 55 mm. A deeper setting only exposes more tooth. A setting that does not clear the underside leaves the blade rubbing.
What is kickback on a hand-held saw, in plain terms?
Kickback here means the blade binds and the saw is thrown back towards you. It happens when the kerf closes, the board sags, or you twist the shoe. Support both sides of the cut, let the blade get up to speed, and do not force a stall. These hand-held bodies are not a bench saw.
Do I set a riving knife on these DeWalt saws?
No. HSE’s rip-saw guidance, including a riving knife close to the blade, is written for a circular saw bench. These three bodies are hand-held saws under BS EN 62841-2-5:2014. You keep the lower guard free and you support the work.
The DCS572 bolt will not undo. What did one reviewer find?
One United Kingdom review says the blade bolt was extremely tight from the factory and describes the thread as righty-loosey. The same review describes the supplied blade as 184 mm, 16 mm bore, 24 teeth, and 1.8 mm kerf. That is one DCS572 report, not a printed instruction for the other two.
Do I need a mask for a short cut indoors?
HSE expects extraction to an M-class or H-class unit, and RPE at APF 20 for about 15 to 30 minutes of trigger time, especially indoors. FFP3 is the example. A single short cut still makes dust. A cordless saw is not a dust-free saw.
