How to use a mitre saw

Updated: 21 October 2026

The first cut is the one people rush, with a hand still on the offcut and the scale taken on trust. How to use a mitre saw, on a cordless model you have just unboxed, starts before the blade turns: the saw sits still, the guard covers the blade, and the pack the listing did not include is fitted. This page is the square check and one cut. It does not rank the five bodies on our [cordless mitre saw](/hub/power-saws/cordless-mitre-saw) comparison. Peter F. wrote this from the listings and public UK safety notes, on 19 October 2026, with no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Before the battery goes in

Every saw in this comparison is body only. The boxes do not contain a pack or a charger, and Power X-Change, DeWalt XR and Erbauer EXT do not interchange. The two Einhell sliders are listed as needing two 18 V packs, so one pack on the bench is not the set-up those listings describe. Which arrangement you bought is on the 18V vs 36V mitre saw page. Put the saw on a bench at about waist height, as Heaton’s workshop sheet asks for a sliding mitre saw, and fix it so the head cannot walk. One piece at a time, no freehand cut, guard left on. Look at the guard before the laser. One UK review of the Einhell TE-MS 18/210 describes a guard fault. If the guard does not cover the blade when the head is up, that saw is finished for the day. Evolution’s how-to asks for eye and hearing protection and for hands at least six inches from the blade. A DeWalt manual for the corded DWS779 and DWS780, which is not the cordless DCS365, says 100 mm. Do not copy that corded manual’s screws onto the DCS365. Evolution’s how-to says saws can reach 113 dB. That is their general line, not a measurement of these five listings. Toolstation lists 88 dB(A) for the DCS365 only, as sound pressure. The HSE action values of 80 dB(A) and 85 dB(A) apply to employers. Wear defenders anyway.

Prove 0° on a scrap

A detent is a starting point, not proof the blade is square to the fence. Set the mitre to the 0 degree stop and put a try square against the blade plate, not the tooth tips. Cut a scrap, flip one half, and butt the cuts. A gap at the top or the bottom means the stop is out, even if the scale says zero. One UK review of the Einhell TE-SM 36/210 wanted 30 degrees and found the indicator nearer 35 degrees once the cut was right. If the scale and the square disagree, believe the square. A laser or a shadow line, including the DeWalt XPS line, shows where the teeth will enter. It does not prove the fence is square. Support anything longer than the table. A 2.4 metre length of skirting pivoting off the fence will close the kerf or throw the angle. Capacity and slide width are chosen in the buying guide. Here the board only has to sit fully supported.

One cut, then wait

Clamp the work. Heaton’s sheet forbids a freehand cut, and Evolution’s sequence says the same: the clamp is on before the trigger. Bring the blade to full speed before it meets the timber. Starting in the wood loads the motor and leaves a burned shoulder. Lower the head in one drop. On a slider, drop first and then push the head through, unless that model’s manual states the opposite. Do not start the return while the teeth are still buried. Keep your hand off the offcut once the clamp is tight. Heaton’s sheet says not to cut pieces shorter than 20 cm. Leave the head down until the blade has stopped, then lift. The DCS365 reviews note there is no blade brake, so the blade runs on. Lifting early walks the teeth back through the face.

When you stop

Stop if the guard sticks open or will not cover the blade. Stop if the bevel scale and a square cannot be made to agree and the joint has to be tight. Stairs, structural timber, and crown that has to match a spring angle are a joiner’s job. A UK review of the small Einhell said the dust bag collected nothing in a week. A bag is not local exhaust ventilation. At work, wood dust sits under COSHH, and that duty belongs to the employer. Open a window, wear a dust mask, and treat an empty bag as normal.

Common questions

Where do I put my hands?
Keep them on the clamp and the trigger handle, at least the six inches Evolution’s how-to asks for. The corded DeWalt manual’s 100 mm mark is a second way to picture the same gap. Once the clamp is tight, take your free hand off the offcut. Heaton’s sheet says not to cut pieces shorter than 20 cm, because a short return is how a thumb meets the blade.
What if the laser and the square disagree?
Believe the square. A laser or a shadow line, including XPS, marks where the teeth enter. It does not prove the fence is at 90 degrees to the plate. One UK review of the Einhell TE-SM 36/210 found the bevel indicator nearer 35 degrees when 30 degrees was the cut that fitted. Mark the waste side from the line the square has confirmed.
Can I cut a very short offcut?
Not as a loose piece against the fence. Heaton’s sheet says not to cut stock shorter than 20 cm. Take a 40 mm lug off a longer length while that length is still clamped, or use another tool. One board at a time. A loose offcut is a second workpiece you did not mean to cut.
Is the dust bag enough indoors?
It catches some chips and misses the fine dust. One UK review of the small Einhell found the bag empty after a week. It is not local exhaust ventilation. Employers cutting wood are under COSHH, and a bag does not discharge that. At home, open the room and wear a dust mask.
When should I stop and get a joiner?
Stop for stairs, structural timber, and crown that has to match a spring angle already on the wall. Stop as well if the guard will not cover the blade, or if a mitre scale will not agree with a square and the joint has to close. A checked cross-cut on a clamped board is the job this page is for. A staircase is not.
