18V vs 36V mitre saw

Updated: 21 October 2026

You already own 18 V packs, and a listing that says 36 V looks like a battery you have never bought. In this set it is not a new size. The 18V vs 36V mitre saw question, for the five amazon.co.uk bodies on our [cordless mitre saw](/hub/power-saws/cordless-mitre-saw) comparison, is how many packs the saw asks for and which brand they must be. Einhell’s two 36 V saws each take two 18 V Power X-Change packs. The DeWalt and the small Einhell each take one pack, from different families, and the Evolution takes one Erbauer EXT pack. None of the boxes includes a battery. Peter F. used those listings on 19 October 2026. There was no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

36 V here is two 18 V packs

The Einhell TE-SM 36/210 Li-Solo, listed at £199.98, and the 254 mm Einhell slider, part 4300885, listed at £281.99, run on two 18 V PXC packs. Neither pack is in the box. A reviewer of the 210 mm saw used two 3.0 Ah packs for decking and joists, and would not go smaller except for a few cuts. That is one person’s work, not a runtime we measured. The 210 mm highlight claims 65 mm by 310 mm. The 254 mm bullets claim 340 mm wide and 85 mm thick, with a brushless motor. UK Planet Tools treats single 18 V, twin 18 V run as 36 V, and 54 V FlexVolt as different designs. A 54 V saw is outside these five rows. The listings require two packs. We are not claiming a test of what happens if you fit only one. Fit both packs before the first cut. The cutting sequence is on the how to use a mitre saw page.

One pack is a different saw, not a weaker label

The DeWalt DCS365N-XJ, listed at £333.99, takes one 18 V XR pack. The bullets claim 50 mm by 250 mm at 90 degrees, and up to 535 cuts in 82 mm skirting on one 4 Ah pack. That cut count is the listing’s claim. One UK reviewer found a 5 Ah pack short on thicker cuts. That is a reason to carry a spare XR pack, not a reason to call the saw 36 V. The Einhell TE-MS 18/210 Li-Solo, listed at £109.49, takes one 18 V PXC pack, with 2.5 Ah or higher recommended. It is not sold as a slider, and the bullets state no cross-cut width. If the board is wider than one drop of the blade, the limit is the missing slide, which the cordless mitre saw buying guide separates from the voltage badge. The Evolution R185SMS-Li, listed at £149.99, takes one Erbauer EXT pack. The table says 240 V on a saw the title calls cordless, so that field is not the battery voltage.

The packs do not cross brands

Power X-Change, XR and EXT do not share a battery. A DeWalt pack will not fill an Einhell bay, and an Einhell pack will not run the DCS365. The cheaper Einhell body is no use if your shelf is XR, and the DeWalt at £333.99 is a bare tool if you have no XR pack yet. Accessory prices are not in the files we used, so we are not quoting a pack price. A 5 Ah pack holds more than a 2.5 Ah pack. It does not become the second bay on a twin-pack Einhell. One 5.0 Ah PXC pack still leaves the TE-SM 36/210 one pack short. A second charger only matters if you want both Einhell packs charging at once, and it needs a UK BS 1363 plug.

Do not rank them by the table watts

The Amazon table on the 254 mm Einhell says 120 W, and the TE-SM 36/210 table says 144 W. Those lines sit beside a 30 cm blade on a 210 mm saw and an aluminium blade material on the 254 mm wood saw. They are not a power comparison with the DeWalt. Sorting 36 V above 18 V because the badge is larger repeats that mistake. Two PXC packs around 3.0 Ah and a stated width past 250 mm point to the twin-pack Einhells. One XR pack and boards inside 50 mm by 250 mm point to the DeWalt, at 4.7 from 557 reviews. One modest PXC pack and narrow timber point to the £109.49 Einhell. An EXT shelf points to the Evolution, on 4.2 from 26 reviews.

Common questions

Is 36 V a bigger battery?
In these Einhell listings, 36 V means two 18 V Power X-Change packs fitted together. It is not one larger pack, and it is not a DeWalt or Erbauer battery. Both packs are absent from the box. A 54 V FlexVolt saw, which some UK catalogues list as its own design, is not one of the five bodies in this comparison.
Can the Einhell 36 V saw run on one pack?
The TE-SM 36/210 and the 254 mm Einhell, part 4300885, are listed as needing two 18 V packs. Fit both before you cut. We are not claiming a test with one bay empty. ToolPicker’s note that a Makita 18 V Twin tool needs both bays is about Makita. Do not copy that brand’s start-up behaviour onto these Einhell saws.
Are PXC packs the same as DeWalt XR?
No. Einhell Power X-Change, DeWalt 18 V XR and Erbauer EXT are three families. A higher amp-hour pack from the wrong brand still will not click in. XR packs match the DCS365N-XJ in this set. PXC packs match the three Einhells, and two of those saws need two packs rather than one.
Why does the table say 120 W?
The 254 mm Einhell table says 120 W and the TE-SM 36/210 table says 144 W, next to a 30 cm blade on a 210 mm saw and an aluminium blade line on the 254 mm model. Those fields do not match the highlights. Ignore them when you compare power. The Evolution table’s 240 V line is the same kind of conflict: it is not the battery voltage.
Does a higher Ah pack replace a second battery?
No. Amp-hours describe how long a pack runs in the bay it fits. A 5 Ah PXC pack does not turn the TE-SM 36/210 into a one-pack saw. On the DeWalt, a larger XR pack can stretch the time between swaps, and one UK reviewer still found a 5 Ah pack short on thicker cuts.
