How to use a gas griddle

Updated: 16.10.2026

The first meal goes wrong in one of two places. The plate is lit where a gas flame should not be, or it is cleaned like bare steel when the listing says enamel or a ceramic coating. This is how to use a gas griddle for the units on the [gas griddle comparison](/hub/portable-grills/gas-griddle). The Products Compared editorial team set these steps from the listings and from public UK guidance on 15 October 2026. We did not time a preheat. Before you light it

Use it outdoors. Liquid Gas UK’s guidance is that a barbecue is not an indoor appliance, butane included. A balcony counts only when the appliance is in open air. Doors shut, with the plate in the room, is indoors. The same stop applies in a tent, a closed awning, or a caravan. Set it on a stable surface first. The Othello assembly field says no. Both Onlyfire tabletops and the cart say yes, so the legs are part of first use. Keep the cylinder upright. Then check the hose the listing does or does not include. The Othello bullets say hose and regulator; the components field says the user manual. The ROVSUN field names a regulator. Several other rows list neither. Do not put a flame on an open pipe. If you do not know which regulator you fitted, read the gas griddle buying guide before the first spark.

Lighting and heat

Light only the ignition the listing names. The BIG HORN bullets say piezo. The ROVSUN and the Othello are electronic, and the Othello bullets include batteries. The cart is twist-start. The two Onlyfire tabletops do not name an ignition, so do not invent a click-sequence. If the PGL300 booklet says to light with the lid open, follow it. The BIG HORN bullets claim about 10 minutes, and that claim stays theirs. You want a steady flame on the burner you opened, then a plate hot enough for the food, with unused burners off. If you smell gas, stop. Do not hold a loose flame near a hose.

Grease, sticking, and the flat plate

A flat plate keeps eggs, fish, and onions on the cooker. Grease then needs a drain, if one is listed. Collectors are on the ROVSUN, both Onlyfire tabletops, the cart, the BIG HORN, and the Othello. The Buffalo does not state one. Sticking on a new ROVSUN is the complaint United Kingdom reviews repeat. Eggs, bacon, and onions stick until the plate is seasoned in the way those reviewers season a wok, and the plate is flat, so grease sits with the food even when a drain hole is there. The listing calls the surface an enamel tray. Follow the booklet if it forbids seasoning.

Cleaning enamel, a coated plate, and bare steel

One method does not fit these plates. Simogas says its carbon steel can take water or ice while hot, and its enamelled plates should not. Match the coating. That is not a licence to ice-shock a plate here. The Onlyfire bullets say iron with a ceramic coating, so a steel burn-in can damage what the listing is selling. Where the booklet is specific, it wins. Where the listing is blank, do not ice a hot enamelled plate or season a coating like bare steel. Shut the cylinder valve before the burner controls, once the food is off and before you wipe. Empty the collector the listing named. If you smell gas after the cylinder is shut, stop. A damaged hose, or anything on piped gas, is a Gas Safe job, not a second attempt with a match.

Common questions

Can I use it in the kitchen or on a covered balcony with the doors shut?
No. Liquid Gas UK says a barbecue is not for indoors, and that covers butane as well as propane. A balcony is outdoor only in open air. Doors shut, with the plate in the room, is indoor use. This page does not add a balcony measurement. If you are unsure the space is open air, do not light the burner.
How long should I preheat?
No preheat was timed for this guide. The BIG HORN bullets claim about 10 minutes, and that claim stays theirs. Wait until the burner you opened is steady and the plate is hot enough for the food, and leave unused burners off. Do not treat another brand’s warm-up as a measurement of these plates.
Why is food sticking on the ROVSUN?
United Kingdom reviews say eggs, bacon, and onions stick until the plate is seasoned, as those reviewers season a wok. The listing describes an enamel tray, so the reviews and the coating can both be true. Follow the booklet if it forbids seasoning. A steel bake-in from another brand is not the automatic fix, and a flat plate still holds grease beside a drain hole.
How do I clean enamel without cracking it?
Do not tip ice water on a hot enamelled plate. Simogas, writing about its own plates, says enamelled cast iron should not get that thermal shock, while its carbon steel can. Use that as a reason to match the coating, not as a Campingaz procedure. The Othello, the BIG HORN bullets, and the ROVSUN tray are the enamel claims here. Empty the named grease collector, and follow the booklet where it is stricter.
The igniter clicks and nothing happens. When do I stop?
On the Othello, check the ignition batteries the bullets mention. Then stop if you smell gas. If gas still flows after the cylinder valve is closed, shut the cook down. A damaged hose, or piped gas, goes to a Gas Safe engineer. Do not hold a flame against a hose, and do not keep clicking through a leak.
