Best pool tester UK: which listing fits which jobs

Updated: 21 October 2026

You want the best pool tester UK in one line, and the nine bottles kept on amazon.co.uk do not share one job. A hot tub you test before every soak, an outdoor pool on chlorine tablets, and a colour you do not trust are three different buys. This page names a kept listing for each job and who should skip it. Prices are the shelf prices in the [pool tester comparison](/hub/pool-care/pool-tester) on 19 October 2026, from Canadian Spa at £5.99 to Lovibond at £19.99. Parameter order is on the [pool test kit buying guide](/hub/pool-care/pool-tester/sub/pool-tester-buying-guide). We did not run a pool trial. A hot tub you test often

A domestic tub needs a readable sanitiser pad, pH and alkalinity, and enough strips for a before-use habit. BISHTA’s daily-check sheet says some strips are poor and that you should use in-date strips only. Clearwater CH0067 at £9.99 is the chart UK reviews most often call easy, at 4.6 from 14,072. It names chlorine, pH, alkalinity and bromine. The title says 50 strips and one bullet says 25. Shelf life is not stated. Skip it if you cannot separate close pH colours, or if the pool is outdoors on stabiliser. Cyanuric acid is not named. HOVIRAN at £7.29 is 125 strips at 4.6 from 136. The uses line names free chlorine, bromine, total alkalinity and pH. The title says 3-in-1 and a bullet says seven parameters, then names those four. Skip it if you need cyanuric acid. The spa bands are on hot tub water test. EASYTEST’s 3-in-1 at £11.04 is 150 strips with 90 days once opened. Skip it if you will not finish that count inside 90 days.

An outdoor pool on stabilised chlorine

If you use trichlor or dichlor outdoors, the extra you act on is cyanuric acid. AquaChek yellow, model 511244, 50 strips at £12.15, names free chlorine, pH, total alkalinity and cyanuric acid. It is 4.7 from 14,399. Bromine is not named. About 24p a strip is the price of a 50-count. Skip it for a bromine tub. UK reviews call the alkalinity colour hard to match, and one report had a wrong pH while chlorine looked right. EASYTEST’s 7-way at £15.99 also names cyanuric acid, and the UK reviews in the file say that pad stayed at or near zero after stabiliser was added. HLLNWB at £7.99 has UK reviews of colours missing from the chart. RAP at £12.92 adds cyanuric acid and hardness, with UK reviews of a very wrong pH. Cross-check a stabiliser colour before you dose from it for a week.

When you do not trust the colour

The kept tablet kit is Lovibond at £19.99 for 20 tests. DPD No.1 Rapid reads free chlorine from 0.5 to 6.0 mg/l. Phenol red Rapid reads pH from 6.8 to 8.2. UK reviews often say the block is easier to read than strips, against a headline of 4.4 from 57. That is the case for it when you only need those two readings and a liquid colour is something you can match. Skip it for alkalinity, bromine or cyanuric acid. Twenty tests at about £1 each will not carry a hot tub you check before every use. One UK review showed a high chlorine colour on tap water, and one parcel arrived without usable instructions. The manufacturer field says Mrfilm. How the two methods split is on pool test strips vs tablets.

The bottle to treat carefully

Canadian Spa KA-10052 is £5.99 for 50 strips and 3.9 from 782, the lowest star line. UK reviews describe strips that disagreed, colours that ran, pads that stayed yellow, and a chlorine colour that was not on the chart. It is a spare only if another method is already in the house. There is no single best tester in this set. Match the pad to the chemical, then the chart to your eyes, then the strip count to how often you test.

Common questions

Which bottle if I only check a hot tub?
Clearwater at £9.99 if you can read the chart and you accept a 50-versus-25 count conflict. HOVIRAN at £7.29 if you want 125 strips and you will ignore the seven-parameter bullet. EASYTEST’s 3-in-1 at £11.04 if you will use the bottle within 90 days of opening. All three name a sanitiser, pH and alkalinity. None of them is a cyanuric acid test.
Which bottle if the pool is outdoors on trichlor?
AquaChek yellow at £12.15 names cyanuric acid with free chlorine, pH and alkalinity, and it does not name bromine. EASYTEST’s 7-way and HLLNWB also name cyanuric acid, and UK reviews doubt that pad or the chart. Cross-check a stabiliser colour before you treat it as the dose. RAP names cyanuric acid too, with UK reviews of a very wrong pH.
Is the cheapest 50-strip bottle the best value?
No. Canadian Spa is £5.99 and 3.9 from 782. UK reviews describe pads that disagree, run, or fail to match the chart. BISHTA says some strips are very inaccurate. A low shelf price that sends you to the wrong chemical for a week is not the cheap option. HOVIRAN at £7.29 is the low price whose UK reviews are mostly short and positive, on a sample of 136.
When is the Lovibond kit the better buy?
When you need free chlorine and pH only, and liquid colours are easier for you than pads. The scales are 0.5–6.0 mg/l and 6.8–8.2. It is a poor buy for alkalinity, bromine, cyanuric acid, or a tub you test every day, because the kit is 20 tests at £19.99.
Does 4.5 from 20,000 reviews mean the cyanuric acid pad is fine?
No. EASYTEST’s 7-way is 4.5 from 20,849, and the UK reviews in the file say the cyanuric acid pad stayed at or near zero after stabiliser was added. Only 23 UK reviews were saved against that headline. The star line is not a test of each pad.
