How to repair a paddling pool puncture

Updated: 21 October 2026

The ring has gone soft overnight, or the waterline is lower than it was after breakfast, and you need the hole before you need a new pool. How to repair a paddling pool puncture is a sequence: find the leak, mark it, clean and press, then wait the time printed on the kit you are holding. That wait is 30 minutes, 12 hours, or 24 hours, and those are not interchangeable. The rows are on the [pool repair kit comparison](/hub/pool-care/pool-repair-kit). Find the hole

Air leaks and water leaks are two searches. For an inflatable ring, inflate until the vinyl is firm and use diluted washing-up liquid, including around the valve. Bubbles mark the puncture. Bestway and Argos both describe that test. Mark the spot before the ring goes soft. A slow leak can be a cluster of tiny bubbles, so move the sponge slowly. A pool that holds air and loses water needs a different check. Empty enough to see the floor, or look for a wet patch on dry ground. Silence on a listing is not permission to work in a full pool. Named picks are on the best pool repair kit page.

Clean, cut, and press

The pack’s own line wins over a blended recipe. Argos describes a clean, dry surface, a patch cut past the hole with rounded corners, then glue or a self-adhesive patch, pressed down. Bostik’s UK note says cut at least 1 cm wider and apply a thick layer. Aarovibe says a light even coat, because a thick coat can curl. Do not average those two instructions. Clean off sunscreen, grass, and grease, then press from the centre. kaiheng’s squares stick once. Round the corners when you cut tape, because a square corner is where a peel starts. Inflatable Repairs wants at least 5 cm of overlap on a two-part PVC repair when the tear is over 50 mm. That is not the sticker method. A Bestway patch at 42.3 cm² covers a pin hole and does not cover a long split. kaiheng says not on uneven seams.

Wait for the kit you bought

Read the wait on your packet before you reinflate. Bestway, zhenye, and D.A.Y. Republic are about 30 minutes. kaiheng and Lianshi say 12 hours on a clean dry surface. Paistely, Aarovibe, and HuakChai say 24 hours. Argos’s “usually about 24 hours” does not override a 30-minute line, and it does not shorten a 12-hour square. A Bestway patch stuck at noon on Saturday may be reinflated at half past. A kaiheng square stuck at noon stays down until Sunday. Aarovibe waits until Sunday noon. Asticers prints no hour count, so you do not borrow Bestway’s 30 minutes. If the pool is full and the pack does not say underwater, use the underwater pool repair patch page.

When to stop

Stop when the leak is not a hole in the sheet. A valve that hisses, or a hose union that weeps, will not take a vinyl square. A tear over about 50 mm is where Inflatable Repairs moves you to a two-part PVC repair, dry, inside and outside, at about 18°C to 25°C, humidity under 60 percent, and no flame. That is not six peel-and-stick squares. An open weld is the same stop. If the first patch still leaks after the printed wait, use a dry second patch rather than a second chemistry. The glue-or-sticker choice is on self-adhesive pool patch vs glue.

Common questions

How do I find a slow puncture?
Inflate the ring until it is firm and wipe or spray diluted washing-up liquid over seams you can reach and around the valve. Mark the spot where bubbles keep forming, then deflate. For a pool that loses water rather than air, look for a wet mark on dry ground or drain down until you can see the floor. A seam that has opened may not foam the way a pin hole does.
Do I deflate before I stick?
For an air leak, mark first, then deflate so the vinyl is flat and you can press the patch without the ring pulling it off. Water leaks need the area clear of water unless your pack explicitly says underwater. Bestway’s ten-pack is one of the two listings in this set that say that. The others either say keep water off or do not say.
How much bigger should the patch be?
Bostik’s note says at least 1 cm wider than the rip, cut as an oval. Inflatable Repairs, for two-part PVC, wants at least 5 cm of overlap when the tear is over 50 mm. A self-adhesive square only covers its own size. Bestway states 42.3 cm². kaiheng states 3.46 inches. D.A.Y. Republic does not state a size.
Do I round the corners?
Yes when you are cutting. Argos includes rounded corners so the edge is less likely to start a peel. Tape and trimmed vinyl get the same treatment. A factory round, such as zhenye’s 7.5 cm circles, is already that shape. You still press the edge down. You do not leave a corner sticking up to catch a foot.
Is the wait 30 minutes or 24 hours?
It is the time on your pack. Bestway, zhenye, and D.A.Y. Republic say about 30 minutes. kaiheng and Lianshi say 12 hours. Paistely, Aarovibe, and HuakChai say 24 hours. Asticers does not state a wait. A general “usually 24 hours” from a help page does not override a 30-minute line, and it does not shorten a 24-hour glue.
